  1. Hi, my name is Veronika from Brooklyn Park, MN and I am currently going through all the steps to get approval for surgery with insurance. I would love to go to the next meeting to meet everyone. I am currently deciding between getting gastric bypass and gastric Sleeve. Hoping for a surgery date in May. I noticed that many of you have chosen the Gastric Sleeve. I realize that this is personal decision but would anyone be willing to share why you choose either gastric bypass or the sleeve.

    Thanks!

I have lupus and the meds I take for that I could not do the bypass, I had to do the sleeve.

  2. I am still waiting for a surgery date. I will have my surgery at St. Joseph's in St. Paul with Dr. Koeplin. Haven't met him yet except for the introductory information meeting. I hope he's good! I have met with the bariatrician, nurse, dietition, psychiatrist, sleep study, blood work and the required five Health Partners phone consults. Now I have to wait to see the surgeon in mid-January, then wait for insurance paperwork and acceptance, then two week prep diet and another pre- surgery meeting with all the players. It certainly is a long drawn out process. I am hoping for late January early February surgery. Originally hoped I'd be done by the end of December for ins. deductible purposes. Oh well, it is all in their hands.

I met my surgeon before I started all the meetings with all the other required stuff and phone calls, it was nice to get that out of the way first. Got me really comfortable with him and he answered tons of questions I had. I have health partners and they approved me rather fast, however they can take up to thirty days to approve you. The lady at my clinic was surprised how fast they responded. So hopefully they respond fast for you too!

  3. Hey there,

My primary care doc recommended a sleeve gastrectomy, so I've started the paperwork and research. I'm in the Twin Cities. Does anyone have advice on how to narrow down the list of surgeons?

    Thanks!

I would say do research and ask others opinions. I had Dr. Drew out of Ridgeview. He was an amazing man, kind and caring. He spent three hours with me answering any questions or concerns I had. I meet him at the informational you have to go to before you can have the surgery to decide what you want!

  4. Dear fellow Minnesotans I am from the frozen tundra of northern Minnesota also. I was so glad to find you all on line. I hope to be approved for surgery in October. I have a question: I am using Target's "Pure Protein" powder. Is there a brand that really tastes pretty good. Does the taste improve with cost or is more money just a waste of money? I get 21 grams of Protein and 180 calories for around $18.00. But I'd spring for the expensive stuff if I really thought it would be better. I'm a recent widow and on a tight budget. Thanks for being here. Morningsunbay

Hi, price has nothing to do with it. I used SMART brand and got it at complete nutrition. They let you try them before you buy them. I say that I used, because since I had the surgery my stomach does not tolerate the protein powders or Protein Drinks. Milk is about the only Protein Drink that does my stomach no harm.

  5. I would assume so for the trainer. The Y is not too pricy if your thinking about joining a gym, plus most insurances will give a discount for going a certain number of times. We did talk about meet for support too. No gym membership required for that one :-)

The nearest Y to me is like 30 min away! I would meet for support groups. My clinic also offers support groups as well.

  6. I live in Carver which isn't far from Bloomington and I'm New Hope almost every weekend at my boyfriends house. I would totally be up for meeting up with people for supporting each other. I have also been doing a lot of 5ks. They are fun. If anyone wants to do them or join a team to do one. You can join my team. I never was able to run and now I can run and keep going. Coming up I'm doing the goldy's run (as long as it's not freezing) runordye, hot chocolate run, the color run. A 5K is 3.1 mile run. I usually try to stick to the fun ones. If you any of you want to do one we could try and train together.

  7. New here.....nice to know there are people in Minnesota and specifically the edina, shakopee, burnsville area! I am with Park Nicollet and am looking to have Dr. Thomas Jones or Dr. Svendson do my surgery. I am leaning towards Dr. Jones because it appears he has been doing this procedure longer. Anything anyone can tell me about either of these surgeons (good and bad) would be appreciated. Thanks!

    I'm in the Chaska/carver area
