MGB or OAGB in Mexico / India / other foreign country
I'm one week and one day post op. Everything went great !! Dr. Rod and his team were amazing ! I am however glad it's over and I'm home and doing good. I still get very tired in the afternoons and I get a lot of headaches but Iv been on nothing but clear liquids for the first week. I'm finally now adding some yogurt and will start protein shakes tomorrow. I'm actually terrified to eat but I'm trying to work though. Surgery wise I felt fine after some very uncomfortable gas and discomfort around the drain area. I went back to work on Tuesday and other than fatigue I was okay. My incisions are healing nicely and I have no pain in that area and it may sound crazy but I feel like my insides are healing well too ! So far so good, I have no complaints.

Scared
It's hard to explain, it's easier to just look up comparison images between the two. Basically it has a longer bypass and only one anastomoses. The operating time and recovery time and risk of complications are all less but weight loss is just as good if not better long term. It got a bad name for awhile because of risk for bile reflux but that's since been rectified through a new adaption to the procedure and it's making a comeback. Its been around over 15 years.

Am I losing enough weight?
I'm one week and one day post op and Iv only lost 4 lbs, it could be worse !
-
Only Me !
I know the first few weeks are about healing and not weight loss but living on broth and jello and G2 for a whole week it would have been nice to at least lose enough to make it worth it !! I had surgery on Thursday 4/23 and as of today Iv lost 4 lbs !! I know it will come, it HAS too but it doesn't make it any less frustrating !!

This may be TMI but I'm going there :)
Yes things are stapled up but that's a different part of the anatomy ! Lol just go slow and find a comfortable position, no swinging from the chandeliers

Scared
I had a mini gastric bypass one week ago and my day of surgery weight was 185.
-
So disappointed :'(
Dr. Rodriguez in Mexico is amazing and he does in house financing! Maybe just for a plan B.
-
SF Jello
I'm not aloud pudding until week 2 with protein shakes and cream soups. I in no way consider it a clear liquid.

This may be TMI but I'm going there :)
My paperwork literally said : when ever you feel up for it. For me it was last night and I had surgery last Thursday 4/23.

Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
In my opinion, you try everything possible on your own first. You get brutally honest with yourself. Are you really trying ? Are there places in your diet you could cut back ? Are you eating all your protein ? Drinking your water ? Exercising at least some ? If the answer is yes 100% yes you are giving it your all and still can't lose or worse gain then and only then consider surgery.

My Dr. Rodriguez Experience - Juarez
Yes the hospital is very large and very clean. Some of their equipment is a little older than what you may see in the US (xray film) but still does the job quite well ! I didn't have any concerns.

My Dr. Rodriguez Experience - Juarez
Today was a hard day for me. Recovery wise I feel great ! I'm just still very weak and working a few hours really takes it out of me. On top of that I still have headaches. Everything will be fine !! You are ready for this, and you're going to do great ! Keep us posted as you're able ! I'll be thinking of you and wishing you all the best !

What would you do ?
Thanks so much ! I'm feeling pretty good today, still having headaches. You're right no vaca time, I'm a contract worker but my boss is good about letting me leave when my work is done. Yesterday I worked 9-2:30 then went home and slept 2 hours to recover lol I'm keeping my fingers crossed this is what was best for me .. Time will tell.

April 22 surgery date. Anybody else?
- Band to Bypass.....a few comparison questions!
I had the band and loved it...well.. I loved that I lost weight ! lol I converted to sleeve because everyone said how great/wonderful/amazing it was BUT that was not the case for me! My "sleeve" was made large due to scar tissue and removing the band opened the flood gates so to speak. I could eat anything and everything and larger portions so I gained 40 lbs. Also, my body was already used to a restriction only procedure so it was less likely to work for me the second time not that I knew that then. Thursday I revised AGAIN to a mini bypass. I'm doing pretty good, but it's been emotionally very hard for me this time unlike the last two. I've had a little bit of freaking out wtf did I just do to my body kind of thoughts I'm trying to deal with. I have a crazy fear of dumping and getting sick !! Recovery is good though and I'm even back to work today but I do have almost constant headaches I can't kick yet..surgery wise though I feel fine. Best of luck to you!- My Dr. Rodriguez Experience - Juarez
Thanks! I'm feeling pretty good, weak still and headaches I can't kick but I'm back at work today. You will be fine!! It's a lot of worrying before you get there though, I totally get that but you will feel fine once you are there. Best of luck and keep us posted!- Why is this ALL I'm thinking about now!?
I was a band patient, then sleeve and as of Thursday (4/23) Mini bypass. I never had any regrets or hesitations with the first two but for some reason even though I'm physically doing pretty good, I'm even back at work today, I've had a terrible time emotionally with this one! I keep feeling like wtf did I just do to myself? I'm scared to death now of a life of being sick and dumping.- Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
I've not lost much weight which is crazy since I'm barely getting in 300 calories a day probably. I know it's just how it goes though, it will catch up. I'm only down about 5 lbs since surgery. Yes the first few months are best for easy weight loss but recovery is important too. I'm just SOOO scared of dumping !! I swear they could have put me out, not done a thing, woke me up and told me I had the procedure and I would lose weight from pure fear of eating! lol- Is My pouch stretched?
You will see A LOT of debate on this and not even all doctors agree. Personally, I 100 % believe you can stretch a pouch, but probably because I saw mine stretch out from my sleeve and thats why I revised to mini bypass. Also, I worked for years with bypass patients who gained their weight back after stretching their pouches and came in for band over bypass procedures. That being said, it's also important to remember the first year is the honeymoon period and the further out you get the harder it will be to lose. This doesn't always mean stretched pouch, it can also mean your body is just used to things now so its up to you to be diligent about eating and exercise if you want to get to and stay at goal. Year two is where the real work begins.- Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
Wow yes that seems like a quick progression! I would be scared to death to put anything in my mouth that I felt my new belly wasn't ready for! I'm actually in no hurry to add anything, I want to take it slow for awhile. My plan is clear liquids only for the first week : Broth/Jello/Popcicles/Apple juice (watered down) and G2. Week 2 : Full liquids : Protein shakes/creamy soups/smoothies Week 3 : Purees : Apple sauces/yogurt/steamed mashed veggies Week 4 : Soft : Cottage cheese/Refried beans/Mashed potatoes This is my plan from Mexico, when I was sleeved in the US my surgeon was super careful with post op eating and required 4 WHOLE WEEKS of full liquids only! It was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life! This is already super easy compared to that lol. Just go slow, remember just because that is your plan doesn't mean you can't go slower if you're not ready to advance.- What would you do ?
I researched obsessively for about 3 months but I was unhappy for the entire time I had the sleeve. I initially had hoped to resleeve but yes, Dr. Rodriguez recommended the conversion because of a few reasons, one being that my body was used to restriction only procedures and it would continue to be a struggle for me and also long term continued risk of the sleeve stretching out again due to my scar tissue and two prior surgeries. After really looking into it, those things made sense to me too.- 6 weeks out and still having regret...
I just revised from sleeve to mini bypass on Thursday 4/23. I didn't have GERD but my sleeve was stretched and I was regaining quickly. I never expected to feel emotionally the way I am with this surgery. Physically I'm great but emotionally I'm freaking out like "what did i just do to myself" I'm on Clear liquids and they are going down fine, I'm hoping it gets better soon. I'm just scared to death I'll never be able to eat anything again without getting sick or dumping !- My Dr. Rodriguez Experience - Juarez
Hi there, I wanted to post a review of my experiences though I know a lot of you have been following me in some other posts I wanted a new topic so that others who are researching could easily find it. Here is my story. I left my house 5 am (Eastern time) on Thursday and after a very long day of travel and one delayed flight I made it to Star Medica around 2pm (4pm Eastern time) No trouble at all crossing the boarder, in fact we didn't even have to stop the van. Also, I had some worries (okay A LOT of worries) about Juarez but once there I actually felt silly! Everything appeared completely safe and I never gave it another thought. In fact had I not been scheduled for surgery same day, I would have went across the street for dinner and not thought anything of it. Which brings be to my first bit of advice...for me personally, flying in the same day as surgery was just way too much ! I did not get to surgery until 7pm (9pm to my body) and I was EXHAUSTED, GROUCHY, and STARVING to death. Be aware, if you are someone who feels they need to know every little detail and what the plan is at all times, you may have some trouble. Things really kind of just happen when they happen and you're just along for the ride. Surgery itself went great and I was in recovery by 10pm. Mine took longer because I had a revision from sleeve to MGB. I felt pretty good and slept on and off through the night. They do not hover over you so don't expect that like in the US where they come in every five mins. However, they did come immediately if I called for someone. I stayed one step ahead and asked for a spirometer before they offered and I was up walking as soon as I was able. I had pretty bad gas pain in my left shoulder and I had a drain (some do some don't) and it was very uncomfortable for me. I walked as much as I could and took gas x strips but it still was very uncomfortable, I won't say I was in pain though, just very uncomfortable. They brought me ice chips that mid morning and around 1pm some broth (delicious) and Jello (yuck) and hot tea and apple juice. It was wonderful to have anything really by that point. Dr. Rod and the other two came in to check on me twice that day, all were very nice but they are busy and they come and go quick so have your questions ready! By 5 that evening I had my drain out and my leak test then more broth. They gave me a sleeping pill to rest well to prepare for travel the next day. My hubby went with me, he ate in the cafeteria for $5 a meal including drink and we thought that was great! It wasn't the most comfortable sleeping for him but he managed. My only other complaint would be that the shower was cold but others I talked too said they had plenty of hot Water so not sure what was up with that. Also, as you've read I'm sure not all the nurses speak English especially overnight but we managed. I'm happy with the experience and would have no problem recommending Dr. Rod and his team. I'm happy to answer any specific questions anyone has.- What would you do ?
Hi there, yes I guess things did progress rather fast. I had surgery on Thursday evening, I came home late Saturday night. I'm back to work today. Physically I feel pretty good, tired as I'm still on Clear liquids and not getting in too many calories. Emotionally, it's been really hard on me for some reason. The surgery and the hospital and surgeons were great though! - Band to Bypass.....a few comparison questions!
