From the album: Before Surgery

I am in again of course! My goal this month is 130 miles walking/biking. I also plan to get started back with trail hiking by doing 1 hike minimum this month but shoot for more. This is something I used to enjoy and really miss. One day, I want to go on a nice long backpacking trip, but day hikes will have to do for now.
-
3.9 miles on this last day of the month. That put my total at 123.15 miles. I fell short of my goal by about 7 miles but that's ok. Still better than parking my butt on the couch. Great job this month everyone. Hope everyone joins us again next month.
-
Looks like fun! Hiking is one of my favorite activities and I look forward to doing a lot more in the near future!
-
4.15 miles today and feeling great. Resting the hip last week and stretching more seems to have worked. I may not make my goal this month but that's ok but I am not gonna go out without a fight! My total so far stands at 119.95. I think my goal was 130 I believe. Tomorrow we are gonna go on a nature hike at Lake Bistineau by our house. I should be able to get a few miles in there. Finish strong everyone!! Great job!

Hello everyone. Well, the hip is feeling a bit better. I have been doing some of the stretches recommended and have not been pushing the walking to much and giving it a break. I have done approx. 18 miles in the last week since my last check in. My total now stands at 104.90 miles for the month.
-
3.15 miles in today but my left hip has been killing me all day. I am going to give my hip a little break for a few days and back off the mileage. I will still do what I can, just won't push it. Not sure what is going on but I hope it starts letting up soon. My mileage to date is 89 miles. It is already hard to accept not walking as much. I am amazed how much I enjoy walking and exercising.

4.65 miles today...feeling pretty good. Having some uncomfortable feelings in my hips for some reason. Mainly when I first stand up. Once I get moving it feels better. Not sure what it might be. Anywho...my MTD now stands at 85.85 miles.

A great 5.05 miles walked today including a very nice 1.00 walk with the wife. Always more fun when she is with me. We have set our goal for our 1st 5K on Feb 1st. We will be walking it, but we will be participating...that is what counts. Weighed in at 287 this morning, most definitely my lowest in 25 years! My total for the month is now at 81.2 miles. Feeling GREAT!!

Did 3.4 miles on Saturday and 2.9 miles on Sunday. That puts my total at 76.15 miles for the month.

4 miles today...fell just short of 70 miles to date. I am at 69.85 miles. Busy weekend planned getting ready for Thanksgiving visitors. But will definitely be doing my walking...gotta keep moving!

A great 4.45 miles walked today. Shari surprised me tonight on our nightly walk by going an extra lap around the block. It was chilly out but a nice walk. My month to date is now at 65.85 miles. Goal is to break 70 by tomorrow night which is half way thru the month.

Welcome back! We would have tracked you down somehow...lol

$%^# it got cold outside!! The wife and I just finished out nightly walk and it was cooooold! Total for the day is 4.15 miles and my month total is now 61.4 miles. We are both thinking about trying this plank challenge thing. This should be interesting, who is gonna help me off the floor?

Well, I am just over 11 weeks post op and down 54 pounds! August 19th was surgery day. I am down 5 pant sizes and 2 short sizes! I still have more to go in the gut but have lost a lot in my face, shoulders, arms, legs and waist. I feel great! I truly hope everyone else feels as great as I do! Here are before from Feb 2013 and today Nov 2013.

Had an awesome Monday and Tuesday. 12.5 miles for the 2 days combined. My best 2 day walking total so far. Still feeling great! Cold weather has moved in, takes your breath away but feels great! So, my total for the month now stands at 56.45 miles.

3.40 miles walked today. Helped my in-laws move some furniture they purchased at an estate sale today also. That was a good workout. I didn't realize how much muscle I have lost since my surgery. Time to start more weight training. Feeling good though. Total for the month so far is at 44.40 miles.

Thanks everyone. My wife was sleeved on Sept 30th so we do a lot of our activities together. We walk daily. I bought us each a FitBit Flex to help track our steps and mileage. This has been a great incentive to get out and move. We walk a lot...minimum of 3 miles a day but closer to 5 during the week. I also ride my recumbent bike before work a few days a week, about 2 to 3 miles each time. I recently purchased a mountain bike to get outside and ride more. I also participate in the monthly challenge here on the forum under the fitness link. It is all for fun but a good way to push yourself to do more exercise. You will be surprised how much you can do. I recommend trying it out. No pressure to compete with others, just have fun and get active. Here is a link, come join us. http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/285564-november-fitness-challenge/ As for what I eat, I have a pretty standard routine. Breakfast is usually 2 scrambled eggs and maybe a piece of turkey sausage. Then about 2 hours later I have a Protein drink or Protein Bar, minimum 20 grams of protein. For lunch I usually have a 2.6oz single serve pouch of tuna, they have flavored pouches, I like the zesty lemon flavor. I also have a Sargento fat free mozzarella string cheese with my tuna. I then walk a few laps around the warehouse at work after eating. About 2 hours after lunch, I have another protein bar or shake, once again minimum 20 grams of protein. For dinner, it is usually baked or broiled fish. Tilapia or salmon. We have a toaster oven that makes it extremely easy to cook the fish. You can buy the fish at the store in the frozen section and they usually come individually packaged so you can take out and thaw 1 piece or 4, your choice. Usually a veggie with the fish, but mostly fish. I make it a habit not to eat after 7pm also. I drink a minimum of 4 16oz bottles of Water a day, no tea or soft drinks or coffee. I take in an average of about 100 grams of protein a day. I use MyFitnessPal to track what I eat. The shakes we drink are the GNC Total Lean ready to drink shakes, 25 grams of protein, 2 grams of sugar and about 170 calories. The Protein Bars we like are the Pure Protein brand, usually found at Walmart or Target. 20 grams of protein and 2 grams of sugar. As for the Mardi Gras beads, well being over 6'2" helps in grabbing beads. We always get a ton every year. If you have never been to a Mardi Gras parade, you should go at least once. You will have a ball!

Holy Schnikies!! I finally was able to make it back on the page! Why would you mess with something that isn't broken? Geez. Anyway, I have been pretty active these last few days. I am now at 40.25 miles for the month. My wife and I have been walking every night and having a good time. We are taking off tonight's walk though...almost time for the LSU vs Alabama game. GEAUX TIGERS!!!

Started the day with a 2.75 mile bike ride before work. Couldn't sleep so went riding around the neighborhood at 4:45am...lol 5.30 miles walking today. Total now stands at 26.15 miles. Needless to say I am a happy camper! Went to the Dr. today, down 12 pounds since my last appointment 1 month ago, 70 pounds total since Aug 12th preop appointment. I am now at 291 lbs. I go back Dec 9th and my goal is 275 lbs, that will be another 16 miles down. Time to get crackin!

Yep, I grew up in Shreveport and have lived here my whole life except for 7 years in New Orleans. Definitely a small world.
