DonRodolfo reacted to lizv123 in how to break a stall?
There are tons of theories on this subject all around this site. First, don't stress, we all stall.
First step, avoid the scale for awhile.
Second, a lot of people will increase their calorie intake for a few days then return to the previous diet.
Your body has set weight points where its comfortable at, once it hits a number and doesn't move your body gets stubborn and wants to stay there. What I do, personally, is switch to 2 shakes, 2 small healthy Snacks, and a very light meal once a day. I do this for a week. And if my fibro allows me, I'll do a little more cardio that week. Not much, maybe 5-10 more minutes to up my metabolism. And avoid that demon scale! I find the best results when I avoid the scale for a week or two then weigh and go for there. Just try and avoid upping your carbs, then you get cravings and have to go through the lovely carb withdrawal again
Don't fret, you're not alone. It'll work itself out just be patient.

Still feeling pretty good. Getting home was a little rough. But I survived, took some pain pills and napped for a while and I'm feeling better.

Well it's a done deal... I had my band to sleeve revision in one step today. I'm laying in the hospital bed almost in shock about how good I feel! I got off to a bad start when they had to poke me 8 times to try to start an IV and immediately after surgery in recovery I had the most terrible pain... Once they got that under control it has been smooth sailing! I am up and walking, I'm voiding, I have only taken 2 anti-nausea medications and pain medication every 5-6 hours instead of every 3 and ice chips/water is going down with out any difficulty! I'm very excited about my future to come on the "losers bench"!

Here's the thing about having WLS and, indirectly, about quitting smoking, too. It's NOT about what you can "get away with." So all those folks saying they smoked the entire time, that it didn't impact their healing, etc are rationalizing what they did based on false assumptions. Sorry folks, you *can't* know how much faster you might have healed without smoking. Just because you didn't have any major complications does NOT mean it's ok to continue to smoke.
But lets leave the smoking issue behind for a moment. If YOU lost 100 lbs while drinking milk shakes and eating French fries, would you still recommend that to someone wanting to lose weight? Hopefully NOT! Because you would know that wasn't a healthy way to eat and even IF it worked for you, it's not going to work for a lot of other people.
I wholeheartedly agree that we shouldn't "beat anyone up" for smoking either before or after WLS. It is, after all, your choice. But wouldn't it be more supportive to encourage someone like the OP to stop vs saying "Well, I didn't, but I was fine!" Unless, of course, you're wanting to feel better about your choices...sort of a "misery loves company" attitude.
With WLS, you need to have the mindset that you'll do absolutely the BEST that you can. You're not going to be perfect, you don't changes the habits of a lifetime just because you had surgery. It takes time and work. BUT...if you have the attitude that you'll see what you can "get away with"...you'll push boundaries, see how much you can eat and how soon, etc.
So do your best to stop smoking and/or cut back as much as you can. Same with the pre-op and post-op diets and living life with WLS...don't look for excuses (well, someone else did it!) for poor choices, don't see how far you can bend the rules...instead, see how close to perfect you can get!

I could never leave this forum! I have too much advice to give and receive. I just know the territory that comes with a bunch of different souls from all walks of life and have learned to ignore the nonsense
But it will always amaze me how butthurt some people get when they read an opinion they don't agree with or ask things they really don't want honest answers to. Forums aren't designed for constant coddling.

Depending on the frequency you smoked before you quit you may or may not still have residual levels of nicotine in your system For instance, if you were a 3 pack a day smoker, it's most likely still in there. But just a trace amount. Tell your surgeon the frequency you smoked before you quit and that you haven't touched nicotine since whatever date you stopped (he'll appreciate the date, at least mine did) and I'm sure he'll discuss it with you. If you were a social smoker or even a pack a day, have exercised, and drank plenty of Water, your system may be clean:)

I would call him tomorrow and ask - better to find out whether it's an issue or not now than to have him test you later and find out.

Give it one more shot and see how it goes. If he motivates you, good. If he does nothing but berate you, tell him to shove off.

Today marks my first week of being sleeved. It has been a roller coaster ride but I can see light at the end of the tunnel - and, finally, it doesn't feel as if the light is coming from a train heading towards me :-)
What has made the difference is this site and all of you. With every new issue that has arisen, I have come here and found answers to my questions because you have taken the time to share your experiences. From nausea to sleeping positions, I have found reassurance, advice and, most important, learned that we all experience this life changing event differently. But we are all on the same road. And that helps big time.
I may be doing this my way but I feel I am not alone whatever lies ahead. Thank you :-)

This is the way my doctor does it. I left nicotine forever in 2006 and have never looked back - I smoked for 16 years and dipped for over 10. I went through WAY TOO MUCH trouble to quit to ever take it up again.

I can't say enough good things about heartrate monitors. I have the Polar Wearlink Bluetooth and an app on my smartphone called "DigiFit". DigitFit talks to MyFitnessPal so my workouts get posted there without much effort.

Walking in the morning. The exercise sets up my day and brightens my outlook.
Playing computer games. It distracts me.
Applying lotion, lip gloss, or perfume. The smell and feeling is so soothing.
Reading the boards to remember that I want to be successful and that it does take work.
    Calling a friend.
Telling myself I can have the treat food later.
Reminding myself that there is plenty of the treat food in the world. I do not need to eat it now; it will be there later.
Looking at my cute new clothes.

.....aaaaaanyway, back to the OP. stopping ASAP is in your best interest as nicotine lasts in the system up to three months. Trust me, quitting smoking is the easiest part of the sleeve process you can do it!

And as Don and Jessica Los said, most surgeons will refuse surgery, and if they don't there's a high chance th anesthesiologist will! I'd question the practice of doctors that aren't concerned about it.
If you smoke after surgery your healing takes longer, some smokers develop leaks, and get heartburn so bad it can do esophageal damage.
OP, you're about to remove a large part of an internal organ to better your health. If you wanna be healthy, might as well go all the way right? Plus it saves money by not smoking I can afford the higher quality healthy foods and they're SO worth the taste
