Great job! Was that whole loss post-op? That is a huge loss in such a short time. Any advice to share?

I think people are referring to diabetic ketosis vs a more benign form of dietary ketosis. I think someone who is diabetic could go into the benign form but not the medically dangerous type.

Not me. I am very glad I had the VSG done. I still get in plenty of water--about 80 to 100 oz a day. at first you really have to sip all day long, but now I can pretty much drink it like I did before surgery (though sometimes it makes me burp a little bit, which never happened before--obviously I am cognizant of that when I am in public and try to avoid it...lol).

I have an off-topic but somewhat related question. For anyone who is in the Middle East (or has family there), would you say that people are on the Internet more or less during Ramadan? (I am working on a project and wondering if it's better to send it now or wait until Ramadan is over.) Thanks for any ideas you have. I also am enjoying this thread bc I have been considering fasting a couple of days a week for dietary reasons. I am about 5 months out from surgery. Thanks!

Hope you feel better soon! Maybe just an off day. Have you been staying hydrated? I think your great dane did you a favor. I bought a SF 7 up slurpee about 3.5 months post op and it was the only and only time I was horrificly sick post op. I was doing work on site for a client and literally ended up in the bathroom off and on for about 3 hours. It was a nightmare! I will never drink a SF slurpee again. LOL.

I actually don't disagree with what you PCP decided. She obviously cares for you and is trying to do the right thing, but she is also probaby trying to follow what her malpractice carrier would want her to do (or if she's in a group practice or a health system employee, that is another consideration). I haven't needed a PCP for any of my after-care--it has all been done by my surgeon and his PAs. I do think if you can find one who will do it, it would be better to have a surgeon here do your after care. Also, it's important to work with an RD who is well-versed in bariatric diets. I give mine as much credit as my surgeon for my success. It sounds like your doctor is willing to do some pre-op testing for you, which is probably more rigorous than what is done in Mexico, and I would take her up on it. Again, she probably can't sign off on it for malpractice/liability reasons--and if she coded it specifically as pre-op, who knows if your insurance will cover it. If she can work it in as routine/preventive care, which most of it probably is, it may help you get reimbursed. Curious to know what others do for after care when they have surgery in Mexico.

The liquid diet will help decrease the fat around your liver and make it easier for the surgeon. Hang in there. Your organs will be losing weight with the rest of you very soon. :-)

I was allowed to start on iceberg lettuce (easiest to digest) at 4 weeks and other salad veggies as tolerated at 6 weeks. It was probably more like 8 to 10 weeks before I could do raw cruciferous veggies, but other than that, everything went wel. I know that it takes others much longer until they are at the point of being able to eat salad.

I have heard that some people are told to take a deep breath in and then release it as the drain is being pulled out. I think this sounds like a good strategy and wish the PA who had taken mine out had tried that approach. It was uncomfortable for me and sort of scary but not really painful and it was over quickly. I didn't even know I was getting a drain. Surgeon did not put it in a good place--right under the bra line and it was a pretty big incision. A little lower would have been better.

I'm not going to lie--the oxygen tube in my nose after surgery wasn't the best. I usually have post-nasal drip, especially this time of year, but had the opposite issue in the hospital with my nose getting really clogged up with dried up gunk (from the oxygen, anesthesia, etc.). Make sure you tell the anesthesiologist you are worried about nausea and ask for something to prevent it. Explain the post nasal dript too. However, I'm not sure how big of an issue it will be, because you will get a drug to help dry up secretions before the surgery, so that will probably eliminate some of the post-nasal drip. The first few days after surgery weren't my favorite, but they quickly passed and seem like a distant memory now. Wishing you all the best.

I would try to take another week off from work if you can. I weaned off the pain meds by taking an ibuprofen/Tylenol approval that I first made sure my surgeon approved of. Once I was off the pain meds, my sleep patterns became more regular. Are you napping during the day at all? If you can avoid doing that, that should help with sleeping thru the night, too. also, walking always makes me sleep better at night. Hope you are feeling more normal soon!

I use little ramekins, a couple of wide-mouthed shallow mugs (for food), and saucers from tea plates. I use the smallest spoons and salad forks from my silverware set, but I never used the baby silverware and didn't find that I needed it.

Probably because they prefer the people who don't pay off by the deadline so that they can slam them with retroactive, higher-than-market-average interest. Good for you for paying it off before that happened!

Also, if you have a mortgage, that means you have a home, and you have any equity, it may be a better deal to get a home equity line of credit or something along those lines. Might be worth a consultation with a financial advisor.

I know that Care Credit has been used for years at veterinary offices and I don't think it's terribly stringent to get approved. But what is the interest rate? Maybe you could look into a low-interest credit card instead and only put the surgery on it, and then have a plan in mind to pay off X dollars per month and stick to that plan. I almost look at it as a regular credit card vs a department store credit card.

I can relate! It's funny, I've always had this weird obsession with ramekins and have a bunch of different sets of them but only used them occasionally. Now they are the perfect vessel for my VSG-friendly meals, and I have plenty to choose from.
