  1. This is a question that I struggle with as I am way outside of the BMI scale thing at 5'11" and pretty musclular the top weight for my height is about 172lbs I believe I have more lean body mass than that. I'm at about 212 and have one of those scales that is supposed to estimate your body fat percentage. I'm thinking it's not very accurate as I get reading the same day of between 11-17 percent. So I'm at a loss on what to target for my goal weight...

  2. I am 3 months post op too. I have been in a stall for the last two months !! I am beyond frustrated !! I drink 2 Protein shakes a day for a total of 50 grams of Protein there, plus whatever I can get in food wise. I am thinking of trying a Water fast to see if Zi can break this damn stall !! I exercise, drink drink drink....I just can't believe this. I hope your stall breaks soon, keep me posted!!

Stay with the plan, and keep the faith I to had about a 1 month stall I haven't been watching the scale much as I did this surgery specifically to address my health conditions "Diabetes, liver disease from diabetes, blood pressure etc." but noticed especially early on and you are early on it slowed down and stopped at what seemed to be pretty quick sounds like alot of the folks are having the same issue, but seem to pass through this barrier. My thoughts are that this is where the real weight loss starts and where most diets fail as you lose some then the loss stalls or slows and interest is lost. Shock your body with extra fluids and activity, but keep in mind you could be gaining muscle while increasing activity :)

  3. NewMe48, WHO told you to increase your Protein to 160g per day? That is wrong for weight loss and is a recommendation for body builders who already have little to no excess body fat and put a tremendous demand on their muscles daily. If you want to look like the Incredible Hulk some day, then sure. Right now, your body can't handle that much Protein, especially your kidneys. You seriously need to consult with your doctor or QUALIFIED nutritionist before you try something so extreme. The National Institute of Health has a simple calculation to determine how much protein the average person needs, and it changes as your body changes.

It is: .8 g per 1 kg or 2.2 lbs of weight. As WLS patients we do require more because we can't/shouldn't consume enough calories to balance out our needs. That's why the Protein First rule is so important. At 3 months you should be getting 60-80 g per day. You also need good carbs, fruits and veggies to give you some quick energy and get the fat burning going. Protein alone for too long or too much will damage your kidneys and liver. Which is why the want us drinking plenty of Water to keep them flushed out.

    Please! Take Care!!

Body builders follow this recipe: They take in 1 gram of protein for every pound of lean body mass I know I did this in my "younger years: haha, they also only do about 30 gram a serving as the body can only assimilate about that much at any one time. That's why you see those really big guys/gals constantly eating, a normal WLS patient should follow their proscribed plan which is much less as every gram of protein is 4 calories, if you are seriously weight lifting you should discuss that with your Dr. he can adjust your plan to fit your physical demands. I guess my point here is that as a WLS patient your very lucky in that your weight loss will always be monitored by a health care professional and you should really lean on that to leverage the resource.

  4. I have type ii diabetes and also had this surgery to help me maintain normal blood sugar. I kind of disagree tht anything will cure your diabetes or anyone elses type ii that is.. The definition of cure is to maintain normal blood sugar control for a certain amount of time. My definition would be my bodies ability to maintain normal blood sugar during a glucose tolerance test I believe would be much harder for any previous diabetic to pass then keeping blood sugar normal during a very restrictive diet.

On a side note I have maintained normal blood sugar since my surgery with no medication blood pressre is good and I'm assuming that all my labs are getting better I loose some of the extra weight I had. That said I have managed my blood sugar effectively for the last 7 years with diet and exerscise, it's always been a struggle counting carbs and experimenting with my meter. This surgery has appeared to make the process easier hopefully for the long haul even when I can't get he physical activity that I do today...

In short this is just a tool in a life long Quest to manage your disease through diet choices, my opinion is that you will not be cured atleast in my definition. Your success is up to you although I believe you have to be in the currect mindset to succeed... You wont be able to loose a buch of weight and then go on to eat without regard to carbohydrates and expect to manage your disease.

  5. Wow, 2 weeks and two days since my surgery and I'm already half way to my goal weight! Better yet the reason why I did this has been accomplished blood sugar has been at normal levels for the last week no higher than 127 fasting at 80-90 I never thought it would be possible with such a small change.

  6. This is certainly a violation of privacy "Laws" and it sounds as though your manager has descriminated against you based on a health condition... If it were me I would persue to rectify this issue especially the possibility of the review being biased. The next level of HR management would be my target and I would start by saying that the conversation is confidential maybe even bring a witness in with you that you trust during the conversation.

That said going forward it would be best to deal with the insurance company directly and not through your Co. HR dept. they will be able to give you much better information than anything second hand and will keep those conversations confidential. As for taking time away from work if you didn't have benefits for the time off you would be eligible through family leave federal or state possibly both of which you do not have to communicate what the health condition is, but may be required to have your Dr. fill out some forms. I am and have been a manager for a big Corp. for the last 25 years, Good luck here!

  7. I guess my situation is similiar to yours in that I have a pretty low BMI and am quite muscular which effectively makes it in perspective even lower. Although I differ with comorbidities to include Diabetes, High Blood pressure, high cholesterol and liver disease from my diabetes. My primary Dr. is against me doing this operation he says he is a lifestyle guy and believes I only need to loose 20lbs-30lbs my gastro Dr. is really encouraging me as a maintained weight loss could see me disease free liver wise over time. Dr. says the diabetes is just a genetic thing as I don't really have any extreme weight issues and am very active everyone in my family irregardless of their weight has got type two diabetes unfortunately. Fortunately I have been able to manage mine with diet and exercsize. The reason why I am considering this operation is mainly to help improve my health conditions and help me maintain a healthy weight as I get older. It appears that the only weight I gain is the stuff around my organ which is the most important to keep low. The Dr. says I have 20lbs-30lbs to loose but I must loose it and keep it off my life literally depends on it.
