Shocked by other Patients Choices immediatly after surgery
I have been shocked by some of the other patients choices immediatly after surgery. I am now thinking that the 6 month evaluation period that the USA makes people go through might be a good thing. Two patients are on the top floors in the Mariott so they have access to food they serve there. They have been eating sushi, peanuts, pretzels ... "oh, but we are chewing them up really well." Another patient had a beer and a margaritta 4 days out of surgery. She is a nurse who was successful with the lapband until it slipped and had to be removed. Then, we went out to eat outside of the Marriott and she ordered chicken. I ordered a broth Soup. It came with shredded chicken etc, I sipped on the broth. I will admit there was some small chunks of avacado that I sucked on until they were creamy. Why are these people taking these sorts of risks. I heard another patient give the 2 girls hell about what they were eating and they walked away. You know if you aren't mentally ready to do the 6 weeks of post-op diet, you just aren't ready for this surgery; IMHO. Mary

Dr. Ariel Ortiz - recent surgery check in!
I had my drainage tube removed and leak test completed. All is good. I had drinkable yogurt ... yum! I am still not hungry, but I am looking forward to having full liquids, which starts on Monday. Yeah. Oh, and I can start having caffeine on Monday too. I am still doing really well. Minimal pain, can drink fluids fairly well, but I do need frequent naps. Mary

Insensitivity
Love your attitude. One thing I would do is journal what he has said / done to you about WLS and your weight. You will never know when you may need to take additional steps. Having a history of his actions will help you if you have to go there. Mary

Should it be this easy? 3 days out, no problems with drinking at all.
I am one of the lucky ones too ... so far. Just had issues with the IV .. phlebitis I guess. I am getting ready to drink my first drinkable yogurt. I am so excited. Mary

No energy
Are you getting in a B12 shot or taking liquid drops? I am supposed to do that and was told it will help with energy too. Mary

I am having the same problem. It is now swollen up past my wrist on the way to the elbow. I have emailed the Dr. and was going back to the office today anyhow. I am now going in earlier. Mary

Books to read
I read three books on the way out to do my surgery on VSG and Barriatric Surgery. Maybe I should have done it earlier but better late than never. The Sleeved Life: A Patient to Patient Guide on VSG WLS by Pennie Nicole -- I liked this as it was specifically on VSG. She talked about pre- and post-operative concerns, success factors, and then delved into maintenance. Succesful Weight Loss with Gastric Sleeve by Dr Alvarez -- great read on the differences between the procedures and good tips for WL The Success Factors of Weight Loss Surgery Patients -- not as much specifics on VSG, It does break it down within several categories of what makes succesful long-term WL patient. Lots of success stories reinforcing the particular point described on the previous pages. I also bought WL cookbook: Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery ... by Pattie Levine and Michele .. Mary

What NSV you hope to achieve?
I have a cute little black dress that I want to wear again. Actually have two. One will be the medium rollodex size of clothes of my closet, and the other is in the small. Mary

Dr. Ariel Ortiz - recent surgery check in!
The OCC has a dentist in the group. I used her. They also have a plastic surgeon etc as part of their group. I am getting Botox and Juvaderm done today. I had planned that before i came down. Dentist was more of a spur of the moment thing. Mary

Hair
My NUT encouraged me to take B12 said it would help prevent hair loss. I mentioned Biotin, she said it has B12 in it, but B12 shots or drops under your tongue is better. Mary

Dr. Ariel Ortiz - recent surgery check in!
Teeth cleaning and fixing my chip tooth was $200. It would have been covered by my insurance at home, but I haven't found time to go to the dentist in 4 years. Now, with my M-F travel schedule, I was having problems finding a dentist with Saturday hours. Just seemed like a easy option to my problem of getting to a dentist. Mary

Dr. Ariel Ortiz - recent surgery check in!
I actually woke up out of surgery holding it in my palm of my hand. I looked at it and thought it was some kind of morphine controller for my IV. It looks like a little bottle with pinkish / red cool aid in it. I don't want to jinx this as I tomorrow will be the first day without IV drugs, but I have been pleasantly surprised how little pain, nausea, etc. The best part is that I am not hungry even though I have basically had water, SF jellow, 8 oz of juice, and chicken broth since Monday night. Dr. Ariel Ortiz - recent surgery check in!
I let it hang, or tucked it in my waist band. It really isn't bad. The worst pain I had is when they were pushing the meds through my IV, it stung and kind of burned. DR. Lopez was in there this mornign when the nurse was doing it. He said, wow you are sensitive to drugs. yeah, I could never be a IV drug abuser. Mary

One Week Post Op!
Congrats. I feel so bloated from all of the IV fluids, I am not planning on weighing when I get home. I think I will wait a few days. But, I am sure my curiousity will get the best of me. Mary
