Throwing the scale out the window!
NurseGrace replied to kortolano's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thats true I guess, I was being to general I suppose. -
All I remember about these things is that they were a b***h to dispense and that they used to be extremely expensive. They may have gone generic now though.

Are our metabolism screwed forever?
NurseGrace replied to mikeross's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is so much misinformation about how our metabolic system really opperates and its hard to dispell because its actually sort of complicated. I don't understand everything there is to know, but I do know that it's not so fragile as people would have you think. I'm going to be taking a class on it in grad school. Can't wait. -
Throwing the scale out the window!
NurseGrace replied to kortolano's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
weighing daily is massivly unhelpful unless you are a CHF patient monitoring Fluid accumulation or something along those lines. People that weigh too often tend to get way to wrapped up in the details vs the big picture. Personally, I weigh in twice a week, but even once a week would probably be better but I like progress updates. Something everyone here needs to understand that a true gain of 7 pounds is approximately 24,500 extra calories. Did you eat 24,500 extra calories? Highly doubt it. Don't get caught up in this, it leads town a dark path of disordered thinking and disordered eating. You are seeing a fluid shift, and probably nothing more. Drink more Water and watch your salt. This will pass. -
Are our metabolism screwed forever?
NurseGrace replied to mikeross's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is actually a huge myth. Google starvation mode myth and spend a little bit of time reading if you have a few minutes. Very interesting. Also, the difference between the faster metabolism people and the slower (excluding extreme conditions) is like, 200 calories a day burnt. -
I'm stalled :( NEED encouragement!
NurseGrace replied to TXBell's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It will pass, no need to do anything crazy. You have lost a TON of weight in a short period of time. I don't like to compair but you seem to be quicker than most so you might just be up against a wall. The way I broke a multi-week stall was to purposely have a higher calorie few days. Don't fully understand why but it did throw me back into a weight loss mode again. -
Not happy with this before and after pic
NurseGrace replied to leighleigh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
first of all, you seem to be losing weight from the largest part of your body first which is your stomach so the weight loss may not be AS OBVIOUS as a person who had big old flaping arms and then suddenly a few weeks later has thin little chicken wings but there is a very obvious loss. I'm not one to ever really offer false comfort but I really don't feel like you have anything to worry about. There is a difference, and there will continue to be a difference. -
Bathroom scale suggestions?
NurseGrace replied to hurley911's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am not certain that the brand really matters but I prefer a high capacity digital scale with NO memory. Sometimes the ones with a built in memory do not show the very small losses. I was never heavy enough that I HAD to buy a high capacity scale but they stand up to more wear and tear. This is the one I have. I know the decription is off, but it is a 400 pound capacity. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Taylor-Brushed-Stainless-High-Capacity-Weigtht-Scale-Model-7402/5740777 -
i never stopped drinking coffee. I count the calories and the carbs of the creamer I use because I don't like it black but other than that I have continued on with my little habit.

Alcohol and Pre-op Diet
NurseGrace replied to BuriedBombshell's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
nope -
Yep. Thats because its multi level marketing (pyramid scheme) people who aren't selling them are FAR more objective about what type of product this. I will be the first to say that if you have some kind of event coming then fine, use it, but it will not last.

I don't really agree with the person who said she is either uninformed or insecure. There are plenty of reasons why a person would be unhappy about an elective surgery. I would suggest you sit down with her and talk to her and address her specific issues one on one in a respectful manner. I put off this surgery for a year mostly due to respect for my husband and letting him warm up to the idea of what I was doing and to give him a chance to learn about it like I had been learning about it previously. Marriage is all about compromises. I'm not saying you should cancel your surgery but if you love your wife and your relationship is good otherwise, you should probably put in some serious work to let her know how much you want/need this.

I hurt my husband's feelings
NurseGrace replied to roriep's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Meh, thats just one of those unfortunate things that happens in relationships. Are you evil? No. From his point of view is that insensitive to the fact that for the rest of the family life goes on and they have to eat? Probably. Just apologize and explain the context, it will blow over. -
Size 1X scrubs needed (prefer sets)
NurseGrace replied to adoptmom2_3's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I don't have any but I'll tell you what I do - I am not a fan of used scrubs so I have been going to walmart and buying two sets of navy scrubs and I do laundry every two days. It may be too much work for some people but thats how I save money right now. I just bought these 2x scrubs about three weeks ago and they are getting to the point that I have to be careful not to put too much in the pockets or I might lose them. EDIT: Oh and I forgot to say, I wear a white labcoat with the navy and always get tons of compliments on how professional I look, I will probably stick with this uniform even as I go down in sizes because its such a good look for me. -
50lbs Between 2wk Pre Op and 2wks Post... Now NOTHING
NurseGrace replied to measureofme's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Most of us who have had our weights soar up to these unreasonable numbers like you and I have some sort of metabolic issues to go along with our food issues. Most of us have been advised before hand that this will not be easy, natural, or anything like that. There is nothing natural about removing 85% of our stomach and the fight that comes with all that can be hell at times. What people fail to realize is that our body likes sameness, even if the "sameness" is 400 pounds. It will fight to hang onto the weight and to maintain that homeostasis no matter how unhealthy it was. Thats why most of us are still fighting for every pound, regardless of the fact that we have had surgery. If we still didn't have to fight for it this truly would be "the easy way out" but it isn't and we all know that. -
HELP! 6 weeks and NO LOSS!
NurseGrace replied to AvasmommyRN's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you cannot lose right now the first thing I always tell people is to make sure you do not GAIN. Sometimes thats the first thing people start doing for whatever the reasons. The scale stops moving in the direction they want so caution gets thrown to the wind. I would suggest you focus on maintaining this 85 pound weight loss for one additional month, then redirect toward losing again. I don't suggest fighting your body right now because you may not have a ton of success. You just forced it to lose 85 pounds in 4ish months it looks like and you might need to "catch your breath" so to speak -

When Did You Eat Pizza?
NurseGrace replied to Lollyx3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wait until you are tollerating solid foods across the board before you try something with that many different consistencies in one bite. People flip thier **** when they see pizza so be prepared for that though. Looks like you're already experiencing some of that though. -
you cannot spot reduce and also fat cells never go away unless you have them sucked out via liposuction or cut off via plastic surgery of some sort. They only deflate. It's hard to understand what you mean by this question.

I am the same way. People look at me like I have three heads when I say that but I really just dont have any motherly instinct. -
I'm 24. Its scary, we have a long life ahead of us to live with this choice.

yes but like many things the factors are dependent on many variables. Protein has calories per just like everything else. This is the breakdown Fat: 1 gram = 9 calories Protein: 1 gram = 4 calories Carbohydrates: 1 gram = 4 calories Alcohol: 1 gram = 7 calories

6 months out and not losing!
NurseGrace replied to Jrussell's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a post op appointment yesterday and my doctor told me that the farther out from surgery the more we have to rely on the rules to keep the scale moving. That can be hard if we haven't been as careful all through the process. My advice is to dust off your old guidelines or get some online from some other surgeon if you were not provided with some. Mine are available for printing and downloading in PDF format online at http://www.laplose.com/weight-loss-surgery-kansas-city-iabs/diet-guides-before-and-after-weight-loss-surgery-procedures.html -
Sad moods since wls
NurseGrace replied to SLEEVEDNBEAUTIFUL's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, I go through slumps. I am 53 days out and about 41 pounds down and I get depressed because I can't see the changes all the time. I can really tell it in my face and my tummy but then sometimes I feel just as dumpy and big as I ever did. I am taking pictures every 60 days, I can't want to compare day 60 to the before picture I currently have posted on my profile.
