How to expand my sleeve a bit? It's too tight!

Once you get to solids especially dense protein like chicken or beef you will feel a lot more restriction. 1 or 2 bites of chicken and your done. It took me about 6 months before I could eat 4 oz dense protein at a time and even then I could eat nothing else on the side. That's why we lose the most during the first 6 months to a year - all that restriction. Use that time to build new way of eating and new habits of making the best food choices.

How to expand my sleeve a bit? It's too tight!

take advantage of this time to lose weight. trust me in time you can eat a lot more! I am 18 months out and had a slice of pizza and 3 oz chicken parm for dinner tonight (I just did 20 mile spin class though). at only a month, the swelling hasn't even gone down completely yet! even if he could, your surgeon won't even try to "make it stretch" until you are much further out unless it's a stricture and it sound in your case you can eat just not a lot I had the same problem. I had to graze a bit in the beginning.
  3. my rules are simple get in minimum 65g of Protein (it's hard to do first weeks but 18 months later I get 90-100g) Keep added sugar carbs at less than 30g. so if it's fruit or milk sugar I don't count it. in the first 6 months I avoided fruit, bread, grains etc I have never counted carbs except for sugar carbs. so I was on a zone like 30-30-40 diet mostly. it was smart carb not low carb.
  4. I had sleeve surgery on a Wednesday, went home on Thursday, went grocery shopping on Saturday with my daughter to lift things and was back to work on Monday. yes there was pain the first few days but nothing intolerable. mostly had fatigue the first few weeks. there is no reason to have help from your mom for a month. she could do 4-7 day trip at most. my mother is in heaven but I don't think either of us would have wanted a month in each other's company. your mom can come again when you are further out and enjoy each other's company when you have more energy.
  5. CGJ - again I used the same philosophy with my kids. Better to be 25 lbs overweight than feel ashamed and miserable. My kids have stayed pretty trim. My 23 year old has gained in the last year and is a size 16 and bigger than I am now. She is also tall at 5-8 so is not obese. I know how it feels to be in her shoes so I encourage her to work out with me and buy healthy food. She finally found a job and hopefully the depression of being out of work will cut down on emotional eating. She already has enough confidence issues she doesn't need body issues as well. I am glad to say there was never "fat" teasing with my kids. I tried to teach my kids it was a health issue and inappropriate to condemn or tease people for it. One lesson they did learn from my struggles at least.
  6. CGJ - that is my story. How did you know it? Right down to the "thinning" out in HS and the whoa! 200lbs get the behind me. Unfortunately all that yoyoing and 4 children too I guess got me to over 300 because I never felt good enough in my body even though successful everywhere else. My brother who called me a blimp is actually the nicest guy in the world. I was age 7-10 and he was 12-15 so it was a stage for him but unfortunately stayed with me.
  7. My brother called me good year as in good year blimp. I was a chubby kid and it made me chubbier. He would be horrified to know now how it really made me feel like it was enormous and ugly when I was young and that carried hated my youth. Even when a teenager and thin I thought of myself as a blimp.
  8. How far are you out? I felt that way in the early weeks especially and for about 4 months in total and then I was able to have most everything in small amount. Except for sweets. More than 1 cookie or 2 bites of ice cream and I get bad stomach cramping and feel the shakes and swear never to eat that stuff again (until the next time!) I am now 18 months out, down 130+ and except for the sweet issue can eat pretty much anything in reasonable small portions. I have a piece of pizza and 1 chicken wing every Friday night! I can have half a sandwich with bread if I choose. This past weekend we had huge get together with 20 people staying over the whole weekend. It was a food fest with more sugar than can be imagined. I pretty much ate what I wanted but was actually looking forward to getting back to plan because it may taste good but it made me feel crappy (sometimes literally!). I guess it's nice to know that I can do social eating again and the sleeve does limit the damage but I also was so happy to go back to my normal low sugar, high Protein life. I did gain 4 pounds of water/carb weight over the weekend and it is slowly coming off now. But I don't freak out over it since I know it will come back off if I stay true to my plan. And I will feel better too!

Is my weight good? Okay? Normal?

I am 5-10 and currently 178-182 and consider myself at goal. My BF % is 26% which is under the max for my age group. My BMI is still 26. I may or may lose 5 more pounds to get to a BMI of 25 but it does not really matter. If I go down much further than that I will lose muscle as my extra skin is probably 5 pounds or more. I already have bone sticking out so there I not way I could be 149. It really depends upon the individual but don't get too caught up I the number. Get to a health body fat percentage and something you can keep off for life! I am already a size 10'in pants and even have am few size 8s. I used to be size 24 and 314 so weighing in the 178 range is okay by me.
  10. I got another one yesterday! You know you've had WLS when you are buying an extra school band shirt and they say sorry the smallest size is a Large. I thought they knew I was buying for my daughter who is a S but they thought I was buying for myself as a supportive band parent!

Hard time drinking plain water any suggestions please

The surface tension of cold water is high and it stacks up in the sleeve. When sleeve opens up a bit more months out it does get easier. I had a big problem too so that is why mixed it with other things which lowers the surface tension. Also warm wafer has lower surface tension (I.e note as water gets warmer molecules evaporate into steam and that is happening even not as high as boiling. Just needs to be room temp or warmer ham you may usually like. That breaks up the tension as does combining with tea, Gatorade, whatever you like. In beginning I thought I'd never drink water without pain ever again. Happy to report it gets better with time.

    So disheartened and defeated.

A stall is no weight loss for 3-4 weeks not 9 pounds. In fact month 2 and beyond 9 is fantastic! As the others said 600 cals too low at 2 months. Should be at least 800 and work up to 1200 by 6 months especially if you are working out. I lost all my weight on 800 cals month 2-4 and 1300 cals from month 5 onward. I lost 135 pounds in 17 months. I started at 315. If it takes you 17 months to lose 135 more pounds would you say oh never mind it's not worth it. I don't think so. Remember this is not a sprint or a marathon. The longer it takes the longer you will practice new habits that will endure for a lifetime. The real goal of WLS is keeping it off not getting it off.
  13. People you have known for years but haven't seen in a while introduce themselves to you and ask who you are. Yup just happened two days ago and 2 months ago!

    Prilosec, Zantac, Nexium...

Nexium is new OTC but it's been around almost as long as Prilosec and has the same molecule as Prilosec. They just used the mirror image version so they could renew the patten You can get generic Prilosec but not generic nexus. So the Prilosec is cheaper.

2.5 weeks out feeling lost- HELP!

you just had surgery and are not eating much so it's normal to be tired. listen to your body and rest when you need to. you're doing great!
  16. playlikeworldchamps

    Prilosec, Zantac, Nexium...

Zantac and Pepcid will also reduce acid so good option. I have been using Pepcid in addition to nexium lately due to extra acid. the PPI turns off the acid pumps. the others reduce acid but not quite at the source.
  17. playlikeworldchamps

    Prilosec, Zantac, Nexium...

Zantac is not a PPI Prilosec and nexium are both OTC (basically the same) prescription Prilosec is just double the dose of OTC Prilosec Prevacid is also PPI and OTC
  18. You are not a slow loser! Don't compare yourself to others and then you would not have expectations that will only disappoint. If it took you 3 months to lose 59? Is that on your ticker? You didn't say what you lost in 3 months. In any case I don't consider myself slow though maybe I did in the beginning. But it's not a race. The more time you will have to practice good eating habits that will last a life time. It took me 4 months to lose 59. I thought that was great. What diet plan can do that? Then it took me 6 more months to lose 41 more to add up to 100. So 10 months to 100 lbs woohoo! Then I had to add in strength training and cardio not just walking to get me into onederland. In the last 8 months I have lost another 27. Luckily there is no deadline. The sleeve will keep on working as long as you work it! Does it slow down - of course. But it's nice to be able to eat a normal portion. Not old supersized portions like in my fat days. Normal thin people portions. So I am about 18 months out and am down over 127 pounds. Time flew by. And no matter what it's not like it's over when you get to goal life goes on as before. You may get to eat a little more but all the same eating strategies apply: Protein first, avoid sugar, limit the bad stuff, move your body. So what's the rush. Goal is just a number. It's nice to get to but doesn't change much at least for me. And I am ok with that.

Is sleeve good for SERIOUS sugar addicts?

I am a sleever who will dump if I eat too much sugary food. It is a great deterrent and stops me from binging on sugar. Pre sleeve I could eat a whole box of Girl Scout Cookies. Now more than 2 cookies makes me feel ill. Also can't have ice cream. It makes me really ill. 1-2 bites maybe is all I can handle. So definitely helps me make better choices. Even too much fruit gets me sick to my stomach but I can have berries. No smoothies for me either if they are too sweet. Not even all RNY get dumping though it is more common. In any case you will have restriction to stop binging but there is not automatic stop to cravings. Best thing is to stay off the sugar in e first place and then you won't crave as much. I never start the day with carbs cause then I'll crave all day. If I want sugary carbs I do at night so as not to wake the sugar monster during the day.

    Carb-Eatin Sleevers

I think hair loss because of rapid weight loss and lack of overall calories. Hair cells are always regenerating and constantly dying and new ones sprout up. That's why chemo makes you lose hair. ( I have had chemo 3 years ago). Because it attacks fast growing cells like cancer. So when your calories and nutrient s are low the regrowth not as fast so you notice the lost hair more when dieting with restricted calories. All I can say is that I never had it to the extent of others but I did get to 1300 cals a day by 4 months out. Perhaps getting more calories I. The form of carbs made a difference I don't know.

    Carb-Eatin Sleevers

I am now 17 months out and at goal. I lost 135 pounds and never stalled. At first weight loss was faster the first 6 months and then slowed a lot. I never restricted my carb intake. However I always strove for Protein first to maximize it. At first 60g per day to now at least 90g. Also after the first 3-4 months I got my calories up to 1300 so that is another reason I think I never stalled. My diet is usually 40-50% from fat, 30-40% from carb and 30% protein. I have at least 100g carb a day. I do pick good carbs though and I eat more now at goal than I did Before. In the beginning I ate hardly any fruit but yesterday I had 2 peaches in one day! My focus has always been protein first and keep SUGAR not overall carbs low. I try to keep added sugar grams under 30 a day. That means I don't have to count peach sugar only sugar added to food which usually is in processed and bakery type foods. Sugar which is half fructose gets stored in the liver and eventually goes to fat. The other half is glucose and cells can use that more easily. I am also one of the rare sleevers who can't eat much of high sugar food like ice cream and too many Cookies or brownies or I get dumping syndrome. I NEVER worry about fat grams either but I don't go out of my way to eat bacon and butter either! I also made a pact with myself that I can eat anything I want as long as I track every bite. I have tracked my meals in myfitnesspal for 535 days straight so far. So I have never felt deprived. Now the low carb diet works for a lot of people and they love it. But it's not for me. I am sure I ate less bread and fruit in the beginning but as I progress I add it in and track it. But the key is to find what works for you and treat your body as the individual it is. What works for some won't work for all!

my teenage daughter is sick of me

well you are doing the right thing now in my opinion by not discussing it with her any further. I am sure she must be worried about you. after the surgery you can probably discuss again. I did the opposite. I told my 4 kids who were 13, 11 at the time the night before and my 21 and 19 year old I told after since they were away at college! I just said I was going to the hospital to have an operation in the morning to help me lose weight and get healthier. and I'd see them after school the next day. they took it in stride. I figured if they did worry it would be for only a short time. I actually drove myself to the hospital when they got the bus. then he drove the other car to meet me. the following day I drove myself home from the hospital after discharge. my husband "picked me up" then drove me over to the other car. in fact we left a medication there and I had to drive back to pick it up! luckily it was only 4 miles away and I wasn't on any narcotic painkillers! but I digress... in any case be happy you have such a close relationship. I am sure afterwards it will be back to normal. teenagers are not teenangels that's for sure!

    Goal!

18 months before after photo. 16 months post surgery. Surgery weight was 295. I am 5 foot 10, 48 years young. I have been at this weight a few weeks now so I think it is safe to say I met my personal goal of 187. Currently 184.6 and 26.5 BMI and around 24% body fat. My starting BMI was 45 and I was almost 50% BF.

    Appetite and Cravings

I was never diagnosed with an ED but I would eat in out of control binges pre sleeve. Maybe not the ones you hear about on A&E type intervention shows but I would have period of times where in about 10 minutes I could consume a couple thousand calories in Cookies, Peanut Butter or chocolate. I was also a stress eater and still am or would be if surgery didn't make me pause and think about what I am doing and if I eat I usually make good choices. Plus I just can't binge with the sleeve. It's not physically possible. I also can't eat too much sugar or I feel I'll. sugar was my drug of choice before and would trigger binging. In any case, surgery won't cure the ED. so still get the counseling for that. But it does slow you done enough to make better choices. It did for me anyway.

Is my weight good? Okay? Normal?

I am close to you in stats. I am 5-10 and 180 and wear size 10 now and consider under my personal goal of 187. I used to be 315. it took me about 17 months to lose my weight but I was not exercising as hard as you. I only walked for first 9 months. then I started strength and cardio 4-5 times a week. so getting 100 more pounds off in the next 9.5 months not impossible for you but it will be work. trust me though you'll still look great if you "only" get to 204 or 209 or 194 or 221 or whatever! and you want to lose fat not muscle so the number on the scale not that important anyway so make sure to get your Protein. as another tall person I got up to 1200 cals by 4 months to make sure I didn't lose muscle. I never did stall. had some small loses but I never stopped losing for at least 10 months when scale zig zagged as I added in more strength training. but I dropped sizes and fat and gained muscle. remember it's not a race! your long term health is most important thing. you will look awesome next June no matter the number!
