  1. I am slowing down too and increasing the amount that I eat. But I actually am okay with increasing to about 1200 calories a day..I don't do well when I super starve myself. But I agree my body is changing in ways that aren't reflected on the scale so I am okay with that.

I did deadlifts with weights today..to think I started with the trainer using a freaking wooden stick...
  3. The best part of this is AngelNP must have deleted her post where she accused us all have have terrible self esteem and body image issues and therefore we were ignorant.

Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

No that would be two of us..I did week one day one again this morning..omg maybe it is the heat or whatever but I was like WHY THE F AM I DOING THIS???!!!! lol
  6. I don't usually jump onto the bandwagon when I see threads about to go wrong, but the OP isn't the only one who thinks you are cocky and arrogant. The OP asked for a specific question, she never stated she was getting a DS, she was asking for information and you lambasted her with your information that AGAIN, worked for you. I get really annoyed when I see people like you on this site who think that sharing your so called medical expertise gives you the right to sit in judgement on other people. If this is your bedside manner, then I would be advising your patients to look for a new medical giver.
  7. When I see people say "Most_________ (fill in the blank)" I want to pull out my already thinning hair. It is such a generalization it makes me crazy. In addition, most american's are not obese or morbidly obese..according to the 2010 census those numbers are 35%, which is not the majority. If this journey has taught me anything is that we are all different and unique..what works for the OP may not work for you or me or someone else. It is up to each of us to educate ourselves and decide upon that course of action based on what we feel works best for each of us.

    Post-Op Wet Dreams...

Once again...this title is very misleading! I feel your pain though..prior to surgery I slurped down Coke Zero or Diet Pepsi like it was going out of style. I rarely drank any Water and got all my liquids from Pop. I haven't had any carbonation in 5 months and I am also wanting something fizzy lol
  9. Take it easy on yourself..it isn't a race Like you just said..it is a beginning..to a whole new you!

    dating and body issues...

Not everyone is on here because they didn't like the package they were offering. I loved my curves but I didn't like huffing and puffing climbing up two flights of stairs. I didn't like binging and purging and being depressed because I didn't feel like I could change that. However I always loved my corsets and how I looked etc. I never wanted for attention or guys. I think your statement should really be: "I am having trouble loving my body, if you love me, you will love it for me" Isn't that what a partner does? Fills in the holes where you can't? Just my two cents
  11. You know..I found your post really interesting because of the last line. You are right..this surgery changes your whole life and while you can read and read and talk to people and go to support groups and think you are prepared for the changes to come..the truth is..until you LIVE AND BREATHE IT..you don't know. Like you..I thought I would lose 5 to 6 pounds a week and be at goal in 2 months. I thought I will just eat 500 calories a day and all will be right with the world. But until I got that reality check that 5 pounds a week is probably not realistic and that 500 calories a day is not what will work for ME..I didn't really know. My point is and it is easy for me to say this..but this is truly a journey which begins with the first step and every day is a new leg. Don't stress over the number..don't get discouraged with the diet or whatever you choose to call it..experience your life..just differently
  12. I did not go abroad to have surgery, however, I did self pay another doctor outside of my Kaiser *** network to have the surgery. I worked with my Doctor before surgery to lose weight but unfortunately I didn't qualify under Kaiser's program. She was extremely supportive before AND after. She agreed that afterwards she would help me with monitoring my blood work and sharing those results with the other doctor. Honestly other than going in for blood work I have had no reason for any kind of aftercare from my PCP. I have been lucky with no complications, a great support group from both my insurance and my surgeon. Since I was self pay at another hospital, part of that payment was in the form of an insurance policy so that in the case something would have gone wrong, the other hospital would have picked up the costs. It sounds to me as if your doctor is doing some CYA and it might be time to find a new one..just my two cents.
  13. I see this topic come up from time to time in here and I am FIRMLY in the hire a trainer camp. But I wanted to share an NSV that I had this morning. 24 sessions ago the trainer I hired did a baseline test on me which left me exhausted and wondering WTF did I get myself into. The baseline test was the following: 200 meter walk 12-9-6 of Squats, Pushups and Rows 200 meter walk My time was 13:34 seconds. Today we repeated the baseline test to see improvement and if you are like me I love me some numbers and percentages! I did the above workout in 9:30 seconds for an improvement of AT LEAST 32%, BUT I modified the workout with the above to make it even tougher! I RAN both 200 meters...instead of walking For all the squats I pushed DEEPER instead of wimping out half way down Pushups were lower on the bar instead of higher where it was so easy... Rows were on the rings and feet flexed So my point is while I push myself harder each session with my trainer, this is proof positive that I am healthier, faster, stronger! So if you were waffling or had a question about whether it will be worth it, I urge you to consider it.

    Deeper squats

Omg I couldn't agree more about the 100 little things to keep on mind when squatting!!! Cheeks tight, shins vertical, core tight, weight on heels, ass out first.. However, I love the effect on my thighs and butt!!! Besides Deadlifts, squats are my favorite!
  15. I agree with you Cheri..I do sometimes get depressed when I read posts where people have lost 90 pounds in 2 months..but I am learning it is all perspective. I refuse to characterize myself as a slow loser..I am A LOSER..PERIOD. I am 5 months out and 52 pounds down..whether that makes me a slow loser at an average of 10 pounds a month, I don't really know. After years of Yo Yo Dieting and the euphoria/depression that comes from losing/gaining weight..I prefer to surround myself with positive reinforcements instead. My weight is just a number, like my driver's license, my social security, my employee ID..it doesn't define me. I use Sticky Notes to give myself an affirmation each day..yes I know it sounds corny but it keeps those mind demons at bay..ya'll should know about those mind demons! I look to things outside of the scale to keep me moving..like when my trainer ups my workout, or when my niece tells me my belly doesn't jiggle (got to love 4 year olds)..or when a guy on a motorcycle tries to pick me up at a red light! I guess my point is..a number is just a number..if you let it define you, you will be a slave to it. So pick other ways to define you and your new body!

    Smoking !

I definitely won't be popular with this response..but why the hell would you cut 85% of your stomach out to be healthy only to die of Lung Cancer because you can't quit smoking.. And yes I am a reformed smoker so I can say that. I quit smoking on December 3rd, 2012 at 6pm and have NEVER looked back. I wish you luck in not continuing to smoking but if you are looking for validation to continue from this gal..you aren't gonna get it. I am sure there will be others who will say they continued to smoke etc., but to me it just makes no sense.

    Empty Sleeve = Nausea

It is not in your head. I have experienced the same thing, it only started recently and I am almost 5 months out. I also noticed that it was normally right before I went to bed as that is usually when my sleeve is empty as I not a big late night snacker. Fiddleman has a Protein shake he makes that is an extended release protein. I got some of that and do one of those about an hour before I go to bed and the problem went away. If you look in the Fitness and Exercise section for some of his posts you will find it. I am at work or I would link it to you!

Things that make you go hmmmmmm

You know what I find funny is when I tell people I had a gastric sleeve, they automatically assume Lap Band. So I then have to spend some time educating them and once they find out what I did, and the changes I have made for my health, they are less likely to judge..amazingly enough. I don't understand why people don't think what we have done is natural..I have no foreign objects in my body, I have changed the shape of my stomach to allow me a better life. SMH!!!

    Resistence Flexibility

Thanks for this Fiddle. Every day I work with the Trainer he starts with a mobility test before we stretch to see where I am at and then we do a number of stretches that involve what you are talking about using the resistance of contracting and flexing at the same time. I am always amazed at how much more range of motion I get with just a few minutes of concentrated stretching. I am trying to find a resistance band like he uses at the Cross Fit Gym to do some of this at home too.
