  1. I was only on clear while in the hospital. How do they recommend you get your protein in on clears? I was on shakes in the hospital, so really I wasn't ever on clears.

    What is your essential cooking tool?

    +1 on good knives. A good serrated knife is good for slicing things thinly. I also would invest in a good saute pan. Not one with a non stick surface and one with a heavy metal handle. Really good for making eggs, crepes, quick saute of veggies etc. You can brown a little chicken and the put the whole thing in the oven to finish. I got mine from a restaurant supply house, but they are available retail as well.

    You are not going to like it. Sweets make the stomach feel queasy and it isn't the most healthiest thing you could eat.
  4. I pretty much live on Premiers. Not overly sweet, great protein and low carb. I looked at the Special K's but thought the sugar count was just too high.

    Could be low sugar, could also be lack of protein. It you are getting your water in as you say, I would look at those. If I don't get all my protein, I am feeling a bit bad the next day.

    Be real careful what you puree. It very well could be the potatoes and gravy. Your system might not have been able to process the fats and carbs in it. That can cause diarrhea, sometimes quite severe. I also agree to back up on the stool softeners. I took 1 a day for about week and had no issues, but I could see that taking one a day could cause to a dam break if you get my meaning...

    Liquid diet?

    Mine was more like kapoor, I only did clear (water) while I was in the hospital. Even then I was on the protein shakes. So in theory I've never did the totally clear liquids.

    Elliptical 2 Days Out?

    I tried using the elliptical trainer about 6 days after surgery. I still had staples in and it was really painful. I switched back to the treadmill. About 10 days out, I was able to do the elliptical and haven't looked back.

    Going to the bathroom

    Fairly normal. You haven't had solid food to eat, most likely in a while. It takes a bit for the digestive track to reset itself. It it continues, you might want to let the Dr. know. BTW Ingesting a lot of protein will tighten up the pipes so to speak, so be aware of that.

    Liquid diet?

    Mine was 2 weeks liquids, 2 weeks purees, 2 weeks soft food, then done! I get solid food on New Years day! Every doctor does it differently, mine is pretty conservative. I've seen folks on this board trying to eat food days after surgery. You have to give your stomach time to heal and the swelling to go down. Don't rush it.

    If you are looking for the magic bullet, this isn't it. It is a tool, that will help you, but you have to be 100% committed to it. The diet must change and the exercise must happen. At your age, I would make sure that I have exhausted everything I could. There are Drs. that can help you, nutritionists that you can see. There's no guarantee that if you have the surgery the weight won't come back. It fact, it is pretty common that some weight does come back if you let it. You said that you have tried to diet, but things get in the way. How is that going to be different with the surgery? Not trying to preach to you, just make sure that you are 100% ready to do this and ready to follow it through. It's not the easy way out as a lot of people that haven't been through it think it s.

    Need Exercise Advice...Torn ACL

    Resistance bands might help with strength and tone, but you have to do something to elevate your heart rate. Do you have any type of access to a pool? Swimming is good exercise and is not bad on the joints. Stationary or recumbent bike would be good to. You can search craigslist and probably pick up a used one pretty cheap this time of uear.

    Almost a week out

    You might want to try eating standing up. My nurse in the hospital gave me this tip and it does work. also no straws. I'm a month out and if I use a straw it get really bad pain. Just sipping from a cup is fine though.

  17. I use the same glass every day (wash it of course). I know how much it holds, and use it all day. I track what I eat and drink on myfitnesspal. So far no issues.

    Pre-Op Shave

    Pre-op nurse did me, as part of surgery prep.
  19. I ate a lot of Progresso light soups. Used a hand blender to make them even finer. I made my own cream of mushroom soups. You can grind oatmeal up with some cinnamon and brown sugar. Go easy on the potatoes, I had a hard time with them, even runny. Still have a problem with eggs if they aren't cooked just right.
  20. If I eat too fast, or don't chew well and gulp, then I get the restricted feeling. Got to relearn how to eat, go slow, chew well. Even though you probably have graduated to solids, you still have to be careful to chew your food. I didn't realize how many bad habits I had (gulping food, not really chewing it), until I had this surgery. It's a learning process. Realized today that drinking with a straw is just a bad thing too. Live and learn every day.

    When to eat....

    I've been eating carbs pretty much all along. (I'm 4 weeks today). I'm getting about 40g a day. Don't know about flour (I'm eating things with it), been eating chicken and rice soups. No pasta, but never liked it anyway. Could you eat the fish without the taco? I was told not to eat fibrous vegetables for at least a couple of months as it is difficult for the stomach to break down. Not sure if greens would qualify.
  22. see if they will let you have some ice chips. You should start getting an ounce of water and then an ounce or two of protein fairly soon.

    At two weeks as well. Didn't have much problem, just make sure it isn't super thick.

    Frustrated as hell!

    I hit mine at 3 weeks (last week). Only lost 1/2 lb. Following the diet to the letter and getting the exercise, water and protein. I'm seeing some loss this week but probably a lb or maybe 2. It will happen. The body is adjusting. My suggestion is to track everything you eat. It really help give you a good idea of what is to many carbs, not enough protein. I go on mushies on Tuesday and I think that there will be some stalling again. But it will all be good in end. Eventually things will settle and you'll be losing again. Hang in there

    Day 3 mushy

    I think that's a bit early. I am 2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks puree and 2 weeks soft. Get to go on soft next Tuesday. Seems every Dr. has a different opinion, but I haven't had any problems, pain or anything so I am sticking to it.
