  1. Petra how are you doung since ur surgery? Are you happy with your choice?

    Hi Sheree,

Apologies for just not responding. I'm trying to catch up on posts. :) I am VERY happy with my choice. I did a good bit of research and contacted several people via this site who used Dr. Ponce. When I found out that my insurance would not cover my surgery I was so upset. I never thought in a million years before all of this that I would have traveled to Mexico for surgery. But then I got to thinking... I lived & worked in Egypt for a couple of years and I had arthroscopic knee surgery there. People in the States thought I was crazy not to come home and have it. But I knew people who had used my Egyptian doctor and he was trained in Europe (went to med school there and everything). He did both my knees and did a great job. Now, I know arthroscopic knee surgery is VERY different from elective WLS. But I realized that I was someone who had actually already had a surgery overseas from a great physician and everything worked out fine. Surgery in a country that is less progressive that the USA can still be successful. That's when I decided to investigate WLS overseas. I'm so glad I did. Dr. Ponce and his team were professional and caring. I particularly loved my coordinator, Trish. She is a believer, like me, and prayed for me out loud many times in Spanish (she's fluent in English, too) when my gas pains were so bad that I was in tears. It was very comforting which is just what I needed. I really had a great experience and couldn't be more pleased. The only bad thing is that it seems that I am turning out to be one of those slow losers. Of course, that could be my fault also as I haven't been getting in nearly enough Protein on a daily basis and I haven't started working out yet.

  2. I'm 15 days out and 3 of my 4 incisions are dried and scabed over but one one is kinda soft with blood. Doctor saw yesterday and said looked great but today the glue has lifted and now its leaking thin watery blood. Doctor said its ok unless it becomes inflamed. Anyone experience anything like this?

Yes, I began leaking at about a week out and continued for approx. 2 more weeks. I was told it was normal but it still scared the bejeezus out of me when it first start. From what I understand, it is actually part of the healing process. Oh, and I am referring to the main incision where they pull the stomach out. I also did a lot of google searches to read about other people who went through this. Unless there's some sort of foul odor or, like you doctor said, if there is inflammation, it's completely normal.

  3. Hello all.. I'm Syrian :)

    Sleeved on Oct. 22

    Was 222.5 lbs (101 kg.) now after 12 weeks , I'm 179 lbs (81.2 kg.)

Not satisfied with how much I lost, I know people did it later and lost more..

The problem is that my Dr gave me no diet program for more than 4 weeks.. now I eat whatever I want..

Welcome! Are you currently living in Syria? Where were you sleeved?

  4. Hi ATL sleevers! I'm Roswell!!! I'm having surgery tomorrow through Emory - they have a support group that meets once a month that I was planning on attending - but I would like something closer! I liked the idea that one person had about having a get together... we are all in this together - so we should "get" together :-)!!!

Oh wow! Surgery tomorrow! You must be excited and maybe a little nervous. Will be thinking of you. I live five minutes from the hospital. :)

  5. Now if any of you lovely ladies can find me an 3arees (groom) i will be set. Homegrown american with middle eastern roots is my pref. lol

I have the perfect guy for you. The only thing is that he's Christian, not Muslim. Born in Syria, graduated from Ga. Tech and is an engineer. He's pretty religious too. His dad is a preacher and he is also working toward his masters degree in seminary... and he's super handsome, kind, sweet, etc.. I know you said you aren't really religious, though. Love, love this guy and would go for him myself if he weren't 10 years younger! I know you're mostly joking but couldn't help but write about him because he's just so awesome.

Oh and here's something I think you'll get a kick out of... one of the first things I learned to say in Arabic was, " Ana mitgawiizha" (I'm married). Apologies for the poor transliteration. Cairo is full of flirty, flirty men. :)

  6. If you're grazing it's not going to fill you. Basically, you'd be eating artificial junk that slides while leaving behind a craving for more artificial junk. Empty calories and artificial crud should be avoided by all of us. While I advocate a balanced approach to eating, without denying yourself, I also advocate healthy eating and the use of moderation.

The ways to feel full? Protein first. Lots of Protein, including shakes, will help you feel full longer. Eat a reasonable amount of good quality carbohydrates so that you don't feel deprived and have energy. Eat real fats, in moderation, so that your food is more satisfying and tastes better.

Eliminate as many artificial, fat-free fake foods from your diet as possible. These things do not satisfy you and the sleeve is not a diet. You do not need these foods. The goal is to eat real food, in moderation, so that you feel happy and satisfied without turning to foods that lack nutrition and cause you to crave.

Address your eating habits NOW. You're grazing? Stop it. I know, it sounds so easy and simplistic and almost cruel to say. But that's the reality here. The sleeve gave you a limited stomach and will stop you from eating a pizza in a sitting, but nothing is ever going to stop you from eating a cookie an hour around the clock. If you choose to continue eating out of habit, boredom or due to emotional triggers, you will have trouble reaching goal and trouble maintaining. That's the absolute truth.

There is no shame in wanting or needing counseling. Our stomachs did not make us fat. Filling them up beyond capacity for years on end, for whatever reasons we did that, is what makes a person obese enough to require surgery. Address the cause of your obesity and you'll find that life gets a lot easier. It's time to discover why you eat when you do and correct that behavior. Building healthy habits now will help you maintain for life. Treating the sleeve like a diet and then cheating on that diet will lead to the same success as past diets did prior to surgery. That is to say, it won't work.

Good luck. There is no shame in admitting that this isn't easy. It's not. If it were easy and the sleeve were a magic tool we'd all have 100% success and never complain or hit a roadblock. This is using a tool to change a lifetime of bad habits and food issues. It takes time and it's not always forward progress.

Work on it and do your best to overcome these things and you can only help yourself be happier and healthier for the rest of your life.

Awesome post, Cheri! I definitely needed to read and remind myself of this. Thanks. Thanks also to the original poster for bringing this topic up. :):):)
