    My Life Is Falling Apart

I will be praying for you. Get a copy of Dr. Dobsons "Love must be Tough". It will help you get your balance back. Bless you.
  3. I am a self payer and would only do it with backup insurance. Call around to find a surgeon who qualifies for the programs. The insurances are picky on which doctors they will cover.

    Those With Diabetes...i Need Help

You may need a little protein just before bedtime to stabilize your sugars overnight. Since you are taking in less sugar, your body has to catch up. It is still pumping out your usual amount of insulin so you may dip at night. You may havd glucose resistance, where the body is so used to having sugar around that it ignores it. Glucometers are available over the counter at drugstores for as little as $10 (only 10 test strips). Check your levels at 3 am then you will know exactly what is going on.

  8. JMarshall, I'm so sorry for the loss of your sister. Your choosing WLS has put you in such a great place to fight MS. Keep your athlete mentality, get as fit as you can so the MS won't affect you as much. Let your strength define you not the disease. God bless you in your battles!

    High Blood Sugar Levels

Jamari, on the day of surgery, if your blood sugar extremely high (over 300) it makes your surgery riskier since surgery can spike your sugars higher. Its dangerous to be under anesthesia when they are unpredicable. Surgery can already cause problems, so they don't want to add another variable. So this is the anesthesiologist call. As mentioned, the high sugars will create complications during and post surgery. Everyones first question for the surgeon is usually,"So what are your complication rates?" The surgeon does not want complications, not for you and not for him. My surgeon is very careful, he stated that he will not do surgery on anyone with uncontrolled diabetes. There is alot of details that the patient needs to take care of after a sleeve, so if someone isn't on top of their diabetes, they pobably won't be on top of their after care. So closely document your daily levels, take the record to your primary doctor so they can adjust your medications. Take your surgeon your old daily numbers and your new ones to show you are serious. You may not have to wait 3 monthes if you can proved your blood sugars are now stable. God bless and let us know how its going!

    High Blood Sugar Levels

Our anesthesiologists can cancel a surgery if blood sugars over 300. High sugars equal poor healing, increased risks. I would imagine leak risk is higher. PCP should be able to adjust your meds right now to get them in a healthy range. Good luck!

    5 Confessions (Join In)

I confess: I am mainly having surgery because I'm embarrassed about my health. I miss being strong and having endurance. I hate being tired and winded long before I should be. My job is strenuous, I can't keep doing it if I don't get this weight off and my identity is too connected to what I do. I confess: I have explained to my hubby how much stomach they are taking and how serious of an operation this is. I did warn him that this was going to take away my "pacifier", I will be a mess for awhile. I confess: It breaks my heart to finally have extra money, thanks to paying off the house, and using it to self paying for weightloss surgery. And scared that despite secondary WLS insurance, something will happen and we will have additional bills from this. I confess: I only told my co-workers (nurse) because they would ask why I was gone, I would tell half-truths and then I may need to come to my hospital for care and they would now know that I was not only fat but a liar. I confess: I can't wait to do this! I am spending too much time hiding from life!
  16. What adjustments did you make to your medications before and after surgery? How has your weight loss affected your symptoms. I have rheumatoid arthritis and hoping weightloss will help my joints. Thanks!

    What Questions

What percentage of their surgeries are bariatric? How long have you been bariatric surgery? Do you offer secondary insurance for self pay patients?

    What Do You Fear Most?

I was amazed when I realized that I was more afraid of who/what to tell coworkers (I'm a nurse) and friends, than of the surgery itself! I wasn't comfortable with half-truths and people finding out later, so I just told them I was taking time off and why. Now it's worring about complications...
  20. If you have problems after the surgery, then insist on one!

    Post Op Pain Meds?

Yes, you can take Tylenol. No NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aleve, aspirin). You can start taking tylenol when you no longer need the prescription pain medication. Check with your doctor about when they want you to take a pill. Good luck!
  22. 64 ounces divided by 12 hours , roughly 5 ounces per hour. Set a timer for every 15 minutes for at least one ounce. Hopefully that will replenish you. With loose bowel movements, we are losing more fluid. If you absolutely can't get it in, time for an IV. Too much dehydration can stress our bodies too much. Good luck!

Self Pay But Now So Confused

Just pulled my Blis insurance cost sheet for Dr. McMahon in Seattle $2233. My understanding is that the insurance company bases it on complication rates per doctor. An ER visit could easily cost that much.
  24. What a gift! I'm sleeving January 7th (due to work) so I have time to make some of your soups! Our trees are changing colors out here in eastern Washington, so perfect time for soup. Take care heading back to work!
