  1. The body is unable to store Protein therefore excess Protein is broken down and converted into sugars or fatty acids. The liver removes nitrogen from the amino acids, so that they can be burned as fuel, and the nitrogen is incorporated into urea, the substance that is excreted by the kidneys. These organs can normally cope with any extra workload but if kidney disease occurs, a decrease in protein will often be prescribed.Excessive protein intake may also cause the body to lose Calcium, which could lead to bone loss in the long-term. However, many protein powders, for instance, come supplemented with various amounts of Calcium per serving size so as to counteract the calcium-loss effect. Some suspect excessive protein intake is linked to several problems:Overreaction within the immune systemLiver dysfunction due to increased toxic residuesLoss of bone density, frailty of bones is due to calcium and glutamine being leached from bone and muscle tissue to balance increased acid intake from diet (blood pH is maintained at around 7.4). This effect is not present if intake of alkaline minerals (from fruits and vegetables, cereals are acidic as are Proteins, fats are neutral) is high. In such cases, protein intake is anabolic to bone. Many researchers think excessive intake of protein forces increased calcium excretion. If there is to be excessive intake of protein, it is thought that a regular intake of calcium would be able to stabilize, or even increase the uptake of calcium by the small intestine, which would be more beneficial in older women.

  2. Maybe? :)

I would wait an hour if possible' date=' but honestly I don't know.. As the articles say there are a lot of variables dealing with how much and how long it takes to digest Protein but they all agree you can hit an upper limit and waste the excess.

Personally I have a drink at 530 when I wake up an then a bar at 9 when I get the kids off to school and then stick to real food for the rest of the day ... (Most all Protein based, so who knows how much I really get)

The amount of protein you require depends on your weight and your daily caloric intake. Most Americans consume more than enough protein in their daily diets. A few specific groups of people are at risk for being protein-deficient, including elderly women and people with illnesses or eating disorders. A protein deficiency is defined as eating 50% to 75% of the recommended amount of daily protein, Butterfield explains.Ideally, you should consume 0.36 grams of protein for every pound of body weight, according to recommended daily allowances (RDA) set by the food and Nutrition Board. So if you weigh 170 pounds, you need about 61 grams of protein each day.Protein should also make up approximately 15% of your total daily caloric intake, also according to the RDA. In a diet of 1,800 calories a day, for example, about 270 of those calories should come from protein.

    Its all so confusing.....

  3. http://www.livestrong.com/article/476921-how-much-protein-can-you-absorb-at-one-time/

There are a variety of answers' date=' but this one is the first one that broke down the whys and hows.[/quote']

Ok let me try and understand this...so if I drink a Protein shake that has 26 grams and a half hour later I have lunch of cottage cheese and a string cheese...the Protein from the food is wasted?

  4. You have hit the inevitable 3 week stall. Read the link in my sig. It will help explain why. Don't worry about it. It will break on its own very soon. Most people go through this.

My doctor told me it was because I was only doing about 700 calories....why I have not lost more....he told me to up my calories to about 1200 .....I was sleeved 12/17 and are down 15lbs post op ... anyone ever heard of uping your calories to stop a stall? I am getting on my Protein in Water in also....any ideas on this? also just joined a gym today..

  5. I went to Walmart today and by the orange juice section ' date=' on the top shelf I found a great Protein drink, it's called "Protein Plus" its perishible, it's made by Bolthouse Farms (15.2oz) has 30 gr. Protein, low fat I bought the blended coffee flavor, and it is great, the best ice tried so far, it's not a powder it's an already made, I'm still trying to find my right protein, and I think this is going to be it.[/quote']

I just got this today...i got the mango one....i really liked it!!

  6. Ok' date=' it's been 2 1/2 weeks now of full liquids and I am seriously sick of it. I want to chew something with substance. I want to eat some fish. I want to eat an egg. I can't beleive the nurse coordinator for the program I am in makes all patients wait 3 weeks before we can even have something pureed. I have read so many other people's regimens that allow purees by the second week, some even earlier. I don't understand why there are such wide variations in post op diets. I am a health researcher, specializing in quality improvement, I feel like I have a great next area to study. I mean, seriously, this is ridiculous. Clearly, I am not a happy camper right now, sorry. I am stalled out, not really hungry but also not really satiated either. It's such a blah feeling and sometimes I just wish I could have 1 day of normal, just 1. I know this is what I signed up for and I need to suck it up. This first month is a b***h.[/quote']

I just had surgery on December 17th.. and felt the need to chew something of substance last night my husband cooked a steak he cut me off a piece and all I did was just chew the meat... the juices taste a fantastic and I just kept doing it and then finally when I chewed it enough I spit it out... and felt satisfied don't know if it'll work for you but it did for me...

Yep any water i drink is always flavored...with a variety of flavors....otherwise i would get none down....

  9. My surgery was done on the 17th of December and I did the pre op diet for 2 weeks only had 1 bowel movement that first week....... only because I took a laxative .....I'm probably pretty constipated they did a suppository at the hospital that's what I had caused a few pebbles when I got home I did duclox laxatives... today 2 teaspoons of milk of magnesia this morning and still nothing... maybe it's all the drugs I was given in the hospital didnt take that much pain medication was in there for 3 days after the surgery......

  10. I have not gone yet and am concerned! Thinking about getting a suppository. Any suggestions ? I don not want to drink that magnesium citrate

Sent from my iPhone using VST

I had mine on the 17th and I haven't had 1 did the milk of magnesia make me so sick with the taste of it... felt my mouth salivating ...... seems like the whole pre op diet only had 1 first week of the pre op diet.....don't think I've had 1 for a week before the operation.... had a few pebbles at the hospital but I thought that's what is giving me such a bad headache being constipated......but I don't know what to do... guess I'm about ready to get the garden hose daddy says...lol

  11. I think I am doing okay. I came home with the following meds: stool softener and Clear Lax' date=' Hydrocodone Bitaartrate and Acetaminophen (liquid) for pain, Ondansetron for nausea, robaxin for muscle spasms. I also have enoxaparin (a blood thinner), because of a family history of blood clots. I feel a little overwhelmed by the meds, the Vitamins, drinking and "eating" liquid foods.

I did not get a lot of sleep last night. I would wake up for meds or to walk every other hour. I don't think I can lay down the normal way in bed. I am a side sleeper, but the thought of being extremely prone with all the incisions in my stomach scares me. I may sleep sitting up in a chair. Also, I have that breathing device to reinflate my lungs. I still haven't powered up to the level the docs want me to attain.

I know the next few days are going to be a big adjustment. Hopefully I can stay hyrdrated, etc.[/quote']

God i feel left.out..in the med department...i was going home with nothing....till i asked for some Tramadol aka Ultram ( non narcotic) cant stand the head high they give me...

  12. Well surgery done 12/17....surgery dr said went fine...no gas problems but massive headache and blood pressure was off the charts for me..i am usually 120/80..afternoon of surgery it was 185/73 and i felt like crap head felt like it was going to explode..they got it down later that evening then yesterday back up and pounding...today Thursday 12/20 feel 100% better and prolly will go home...to start the new me journey....no food problems..so far...

  13. Actually... I knew radishes were really low in calories.... and my pre op diet is to have one sensible meal... along with my 2 Protein shakes...I just figured that would have been part of my sensible meal in a salad so I just cut up a bunch of radishes dashed then with salt ...like potato chips... but so healthy.... and snacked on them. The other thing is on Monday I didn't have my other second Protein Shake so I figured out I'm getting less calories anyway so I don't see the problem snacking on radishes...
