  1. Some ppl like to be brutally honest. It validates their sense of self-righteous superiority complex. Sometimes such much insensitivity can be hard to ignore even for the most thick-skin. It's not about being afraid to post out of fear of a reality check but not wanting to associate with negativity that is unnecessary harsh. Honesty is not interchangeable with rudeness.

  2. I think it depends on why you're not telling. As I said in a previous post' date=' many fat people become private people because of the shame they have felt for so long. Privacy is not genetically viewed in evolution. It was created by certain humans to protect.[/quote']

Besides my immediate family, no ones know that I've become obese in the last 2 1/2 yrs. All other family and friend have not seen me in 3 yrs. The worst they have seen me as is 10 to 15 Ibs overweight. I have no intention of them ever seeming me until I look like the person they knew. I don't see how someone who is fat can be ashamed of the method they use to loose weight so they hide it.

So many things in life is social construct is impossible to separate identity and what is factual. Like race is a social construct to separate and put ppl in boxes to label. We get asked about our racial identity all the time and are ok with it for the most part for identification. Even though scientific research say race has no biology meaning.

My point is privacy in relation to genetics evolution has no relevance to how we function in society today. There is a whole rabbit hole we can go down.

  3. How did I learn about WLS? Commercials and ads. From there I researched. I didn't need anyone to give me a testimony. They're living in the Age of Information. My sister told me how are cousin is on FB telling everyone she lost weight through diet and exercise. We know from my aunt telling my mom that she had an additional tool (Gastric Bypass) to help her get there more quicker. Did her not telling my sister or I about WLS stop us from finding out about it? Nope. We're related but she is not obligated to tell us or anyone else her personal business. That is a attitude of entitlement.

  4. Yep I've always been a prideful person but since I'm not religious it holds no negative connotation with me. Lucky for me I don't use others as a moral compass for guidance. Their principles and values are not standard for society.

Besides YouTube this is the only social media I participate in. Over sharing is not something I do and privacy is very important to me. But I don't think less of ppl that do or that I'm more moral because ppl will tell anyone their business.

  5. Even among obese WLS has a stigma attached to it. That something I recently learned.

As for me. Except for family members none of my friends know how much weight I gained in the last two yrs. They only seen me at 10 and 15 lbs overweight. I moved out of state for a few yrs and stayed in contact through phone calls and emails. For them to know how far I let myself go is too much for me to express. I'm not the vulnerable, soul bearing type anyway. Besides I already know how negative they see fat ppl. A few has called me fat before when we got into arguments. Not to put them because I've said hash things too. The ones we associate with know what buttons to push.

In the end its no one business. It's a private matter. No one has the right to know unless you want, not obligated, to inform them. I've never asked a stranger or someone I know a personal question expecting they have to tell me or I'll feel mislead or deceived.

  6. There are not emergency rooms at every va. The closet one to me is about two hours away. And your PCM does not have to do anything for you in regard to your wls unless is was related to when you were a veteran or they performed the surgery. Just like now if I walk into an Er with a Migraine I cannot get rid of they might pay they might not but most likely will as I have a disability rating from them for Migraines. And I am talking about a non Va emergency room because the va ones are too far away for a real emergency.

Ok I didn't know there wasn't a ER at every VA center nor veterans who live far from one. I've told my pcp once about getting WLS ( In MX) and she said they could do the after care. She was my doc before I got switched to a non supporter of WLS. As for civilian hospitals, I don't know the protocol. Sorry I couldn't be of help.

  7. Wow, she was way out of line. Doctors need to check themselves. There is a line between informing your patients about the risks with anything they want to discuss and giving their biased non medical opinion about it. WLS is a great tool. And with more impressionable and malleable patients than you and I would get discouraged.

Good that your looking for another pcp. We need support from our health providers not judgment. I hope this won't delay the process for you.

  8. Sure it's a bias opinion. But it is also completely professional. She is a dietician' date=' not an MD or a Psycologist. Her job is to help create a balanced diet to properly nourish the body. She is Absoloutly correct. You can lose all the weight you need to without WLS. Unfortunately our problems are most often psychological, habit, or willpower related. All of which fall outside of her realm of expertise. Sometimes you have to decide what is right for you. There are MD's that adamantly oppose WLS, does this make them unprofessional? No, it simply makes them not my physician.[/quote']

When I talk to any professional I want to get information one the whatever subject. That includes the different bariatric options, pros and cons, and details on whatever else I NEED to know about the steps to qualify. Not once did she mention the benefits of WLS. That does not include their personal opinions about it if I didn't ask for it. I don't need brainwashing. I'm capable of thinking and making decisions for myself. Since we all were veterans it obvious that we know weight loss can be achieved without WLS. You can't get in nor stay in overweight. After so long you'll get kicked out.

As for my pcp I never said he was unprofessional just against WLS. Something I never heard of before which surprised me. Of course I know its possible doctors maybe against it. They know there is more than one way to do treatment. It only become a problem when they try to force their beliefs on you. Hopefully it won't be a problem in the end. But thank you for the feedback.

  9. The MOVE program is a joke anyway. It's not that I wasn't aware of how to eat I didn't have the motivation or will power to not eat all the bad stuff if it were as easy as eating certain things or not eating others I wouldn't have to go to the damn classes in the first place. Mind u they had me go to these classes after I already had been on a supervised diet and working with a dietician and classes on active duty not even a year prior. I would totally be going in there with the mindset that its what u have to do to get to ur goal and pick up a couple pointers but otherwise I would not be taking those people too serious in my experience they aren't invested in individual progress and results.

The only reason Im going to these classes is because its required to get a referral for Bariatric surgery. At that Intro class was the first time I encounter the stigma associated with WLS. After reading so many posts on this forum about I shouldn't be surprise. Even my PCP there seemed against it. He said no, no, no do MOVE, it works. When I just starred at him he then said I have to lose 10 % of my weight first. When actually it's 5%.

To avoid encountering more bad attitudes toward WLS Im going to switch to TeleMOVE which is 82 days. Hopefully after I complete the program my pcp will do the referral. I'm just worried that he won't do it. I never thought a doctor would be against WLS. I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

  10. Instead of going to MX for WLS I've decided to go through Veterans Affairs. In order to get a referral I have to attend 12-15 MOVE Group classes.

During the intro class that don't count the dietician went over options available after the completion of class. She went on and on about Orlistat. Than she ask did anyone want to know about Bariatric surgery. Everybody objected stating "No way, too extreme", and "that is dangerous, so many complications". I said I do. She than said well Im not going to take too much time talking about it.

Here comes the blurred line. She talked about all the complications that happen in the PAST before they learned more about the procedure etc. Than told us how she talked a few of her patients OUT of getting WLS. That if your following the MOVE program losing weight why get WLS. Her tone was negative. She said more but you get the idea.

To me she wasn't giving her professional opinion but a personal anti-WLS. She even described it as a luxury and it didn't have to be provided and how lucky we were to have the option.

Listen to the others in the group is my first encounter with negativity associated with WLS. I didn't care about their opinions but I was shocked and disturbed that someone in the medical field would disapprove so adamantly. Am I over reacting or did a bias actually happen?

  11. To be honest' date=' i'm stunned that anyone would go to Mexico to have surgery. Having been raised in a medical family with over 40 years of experience, I can say we have seen some true tragedies come from that country.

Those saying that they felt more comfortable because a Mexican surgeon has done more sleeves than a particular US doctor is just nonsense in my opinion. Of course they have done more. They're far cheaper. That does not mean the quality is better. Walmart sells more t-shirts than Ralph Lauren. It doesn't mean that Walmart's t-shirts are better. Far from it. They can point to that their Mexican surgeons claim to have a low leak or fatality %. Well of course they do - because they can make up whatever number they want. There is no strong medical reporting agency in Mexico to keep them honest.

My mother has had a few patients who are struggling to find an insurance company now after their Mexican surgery due to complications. Problem being that there are clauses in nearly every insurance policy that exclude complications from surgery outside of the United States. So she has had to fight and fight for patients who are having complications from their surgery in Mexico and it doesn't look good in most cases.

I hope no one takes this the wrong way. Im not trying to hurt anyones feelings who are doing self-pay. Just giving my opinion based on my history in the medical field.[/quote']

I'm amazed and glad you were able to state your opinions without getting attacked. I was harassed for thanking a poster for reminding me how to do basic research I learned in school on the "Is Dr. Aceves really that good" thread. It made me more suspect about that doctor since so many were getting offensive. That is not normal. They could be fake patients with agenda for a MX doctor. It put my plans on going to MX for surgery on hold in pursuit of checking out doctors in US more. All experiences and questions should be welcomed.

  12. What do you expect GGP? You are negative commenting on a surgeon in which you have no experience. And you are making accusations against other members who are only defending their choice' date=' which by the way nobody should have to do. #getalife[/quote']

What negative comments were stated? Was it my common sense statement about dismissing others for choosing a lower cost MX surgeon when ppl also say the same thing in good USA about ANYONE going to MX for surgery because its cheaper? That would be a hypocrisy. Or maybe it was my compliment to the other poster that did extensive research vetting these MX surgeons? Reminding me what I learn in college and should utilize myself. What was so rude and offensive about that. Please do tell? Obviously you got issues with truthful statement. I got a great life. Get yourself a new life. This one obsessed with my comments is creepy.

  13. I understand what your saying. It sad but those who work for you is a reflection upon you. One has to wonder if a doctor wiling have an incompetent staff than how can I trust that he is not the same. The same way that the friends you hang around reflects what kind of a person you are. There are a few doctors I crossed off my list for various reasons. I like to very through in my research, especially over something as serious as gastric sleeve surgery. Going outside your country to have a major surgery is a big risk. No one want to get scammed or end up butchered. The guidelines, standards, laws and many other operations in MX is different than what we know. If something goes wrong or illegal happen most wont know how to or where to go to get justice unlike in the states. I bet the embassy won't be much help. I don't mean to offend but we all taking a risk as it is. You have to do what you think is best and safest for yourself.

  14. I've heard that it is very uncommon' date=' but has anyone on here had one? If so, what did you do for follow up care, and did your insurance cover it?[/quote']

Search for username Jen Jen or Dr. Almanza or Dr. Kelly. The reason I remember her because I had planned on using Dr. Ramos-Kelly until I read her story. It came down to the ethics of the matter for me. Read to understand. There has been others but none I remember by poster name. Most came from Obesity Help website. You may have to go back a few yrs to find but some are there.
