    Ur Help Guys

Samar, I do understand being anxious about a possible leak. I'm not sure what the doctor told you, but what I know about it is that yes, having a leak is a possibility, but I don't believe that it happens very often. Being sleeved is a surgery and like any surgery, things can happen. I did a little research on this and here is what I found: 2.2% is a very small percentage chance of a leak happening, but yes, it can happen. If a leak does occur, then what they would do is to do an additional surgery to fix the leak and would probably put in a drain for a while. Is it fatal? Yes, but if it is caught in time you would be fine. I do know for a fact that most, if not all surgeons, will do a leak check right after the staples are used to close the stomach, or the next day. Some do both. My wife had this surgery one month ago exactly and she is doing great! I will have the surgery a week from today and I look forward to it. I am well aware of the risks, and I trust the medical personnel doing my surgery. As for your life changing, yes, that will happen too. You will have some restrictions. No more carbonated beverages is one. Another is that you'll have to change your eating habits. You have to remember that any weight loss surgery is a tool. You are still responsible for changing your eating habits and exercising. I encourage you to look around this site, and feel free to ask questions. Remember that the only non intelligent question is the one not asked! Be sure to do further research on the internet. There are a number of sites dealing with the sleeve surgery specifically and weight loss surgery in general. It is a life changing decision and one that you need to go into with both eyes open. Eric
  10. Pookey, you look stupendous! What a transformation! Great Job!
  11. Okay everyone, I had my blood draw this morning and am finished with my pre-admit process. Nothing else left to do but wait and stick to the pre-op diet. The only thing I am concerned with is that I am having allergy issues which is causing a persistent cough due to post nasal drip. Other than I am ready to go. T minus seven days and counting. Eric

  13. Hi Kate and welcome to the forum! I wanted to give you some of my experience on why I am having the Gastric Sleeve surgery. Kate, I completely understand where you are coming from on this part. I know what what it's like to be really fat. I was over 400 pounds in high school and except for my childhood before puberty and a year long period in 1999, I have always been grossly fat. And depressed. And in pain. And suffering from a lack of wanting to do anything active at all! The other thing I dealt with was embarrassment. Walking into a restaurant was never a fun thing for me as I was constantly stared at. Buying clothing was never fun either. Believe me, I understand where you're coming from. A lot of people here will as well. How do you feel you will be restricted due to loose skin? I know that loose skin will be something to be dealt with, and I will have to deal with it as well. What I am planning on doing is to do a lot of toning exercises as well as working on building muscle. Also, compression clothing will help with loose skin. I know of one gentleman on this forum who does distance running and he recommends wearing compression clothing. My wife, who is one month post-op is beginning to deal with some loose skin, but the compression clothing is working for her. Personally, when (not if) I lose the current weight I have and reach my goal weight of 180, I will be thrilled to be dealing with loose skin. Even if I have to pay for further surgery to take care of that, the loss of the excess weight holding me down will have been worth it. (Just FYI, I started at 365 at 6'1" and currently am down to 341.8) This is a really good question and one that I asked myself just two days ago when my Father-in-Law and I were discussing my weight loss so far. He was telling me that after losing 24 pounds so far without surgery, why do the surgery?! My answer to him, and to you is this: out of the times I have used diet and exercise to lose weight, I have always failed in the long term. Sure, I have success now, but what happens when I trip up and eat the way I shouldn't. Or any number of reasons why I gain the weight back plus more? Having the surgery is a tool. Remember that. It's not a cure all but a tool to use in order that a person can make a permanent lifestyle change for the better! That is how I view this upcoming surgery. I will still have to work at it, and I will have ups and downs, BUT, I will be forced to maintain proper portions and proper caloric intake and proper nutrition and this is something that I will be able to pass on to my daughters so that they, God willing, will never have to go through what I did growing up! That's why I am choosing to have the surgery. I am committed to living a healthy lifestyle for me first, then my family. Faith has a lot to do with it as well, but that's another subject entirely. Eric
  14. Need2Change, There is always a chance something could go wrong. It's natural to think about it, but I wouldn't dwell on it at all. Think about it this way; something could happen crossing the street, parking your car, or any number of things! From what I have read and watching my wife go through the procedure a month ago, I am convinced that mine will be a piece of cake! Albeit a painful one, but a piece of cake non the less. I don't know about you, but I rely on my faith a lot in situations like this. Not going to get religious here on you, but however you meditate, or pray or whatever takes you to that place of peace, I would say do that. Concentrate on that and let that be your help in this. Once you are at peace, think of your boys and how much more fun you'll have with them; how much more active you will be with them! I'll keep you in prayer that you find that peace. You'll be fine. It'll be over before you know it and you'll have started that journey to that newer, more improved you! Eric

  18. [quote name=McSleevy ' timestamp='1339394928' post='370777] I have a 7 month old.. I am scheduled to be sleeved on June 27th. I am also worried about not being able to pick her up.. My doctor hasn't mentioned anything. How long did they tell you that you needed to refrain from lifting? McSleevy, My wife and I were told not to lift anything over 25 pounds until after the fourth week post-op. My wife made the mistake of lifting our 9 year old (76 pounds)and that part was apparently fine, but setting her down caused a lot of pain. I'm not a doctor, and won't have the surgery until next Tuesday, but I was say don't lift until after the 4th week. I understand as a parent how hard that will be, but it would be better to be able to lift without injury at 4 weeks than have something bad happen. But holding shouldn't be any issue! Eric
  19. Good Luck to all of you! We'll keep all of you in our prayers for a successful surgery and quick recovery and healing! Can't wait to hear about the start of your new lives! Eric
  20. Mina, Don't apologize. You take care of you and worry about you first. Checking in is great so that we know how you and everyone else who checks in is doing, I personally would rather you be okay and ready to check in and post when you're ready. No rush. Glad to hear your out and doing better. Look forward to hearing more when you're available and ready to. Eric
  21. My wife and I are one of those couples. She had her's May 15th and mine is June 19th. She wanted to go first and I was okay with that. I'm currently in my pre-op diet and to be very honest, it is so much easier as we have both gone through this together. We both know what we need, and shopping is much easier for our meals. So far it hasn't been a struggle at all! Good luck to both of you!
  22. Happy Sleeving Day to those having surgery today! Please let us know how things are going for you! Prayers and well wishes to all of you. We have one going in for surgery tomorrow! cissiesue Good luck and we'll put you in our prayers! I look forward to hearing from you on your success!

    Pre Op Diet

That is awesome that your husband is going to do this with you! I can tell you from experience that with your significant others help it is easier. My wife was sleeved over three weeks ago and since we are doing this at almost the same time, it is so much easier for the both of us. Hang in there everyone! A leaner you is soon to arrive!

    Pre Op Diet

I'll be honest, that bites! (no pun intended) I'm not sure how I'd survive with that one. Kiloalphatango, just out of curiosity, how many calories per day are you being allowed, and how much weight are they wanting you to lose before surgery?
