  1. You'll be fine. Typically you go into pre-op at least an hour before your surgery and I don't know about your hospital, but mine didn't allow anybody back there with me. It was there that I changed into the hospital gown and all my stuff went into a bag which was attached to the gurney (obviously don't bring jewelry or valuables). If they don't do that you could ask them to take it out to your husband. As for after surgery, frankly you're probably not going to care if he's there or not. It takes several hours for the anesthesia to wear off (you'll be in post-op for awhile while this happens before they take you to your room) and you're going to be on painkillers and thus probably sleeping or talking to imaginary people (apparently I totally did that). If you need anything thats what the nurses are for. Trust me, you'll be so irritated with them coming and checking your vitals every hour that you'll enjoy the peace and quiet to just sleep without feeling like you have to entertain someone! Good luck with your surgery!

  2. I call my self the part time vegetarian as I only eat meat once or twice a week. I eat a lot of fish, though. I found that when I was fully vegetarian I felt really crappy but after I incorporated a little meat back into my diet I steadied back out. I still like meat, but nowhere like I used to crave it. I actually prefer fruits, veggies, and fish more than anything now!

  3. I told some of my coworkers, but not all of them. When my weight loss became apparent I told them I had a 'lifestyle change'. That I cut out the carbs, sugar, fat, meat, etc and ate fish and lots of veggies and that I exercised a lot. The important thing is to not let people bully you into telling them. I've kept to my guns about my 'lifestyle change' (because it's actually the truth...more or less, ya know?) and eventually they stopped asking and I now just get a thumbs up when they see me.

  4. So I'm about 7 weeks out of surgery and overnight I dropped a couple of pounds after having been stalled for 2 weeks. Today I've been ravenously hungry! So hungry that I feel actually physically sick from it. Granted I ran out of my Protein Drink yesterday so today I haven't gotten as much Protein as normal...but has this happened to anybody else? Is it because my metabolism has jump started again? Is it because I lost 3 lbs overnight? I'm now slightly freaking out that my stomach is going to stretch out. Or that I'm going to always be hungry now! Why am I so hungry?!?

  5. Sometimes medicines can give you a peculiar smell are they related. As your meds go away the smell might. As for right now why don't you use the clinical secret. It's great and helps A LOT trust me I sweat a lot. Anything above 20-25% aluminum chloride that should do it

I'm willing to try rain dancing while beating a jungle drum and singing the 'My Little Pony' theme song if it'll help! Thank you and I'm definitely gonna check that out!

  6. Hey buddy! I haven't noticed it with myself, but I've seen LOTS of posts about it. I'm thinking you're totally normal. :) I hope you've been feeling better!

Hey! I feel okay, the medicines have been helping a lot and I'm kinda glad that I've stalled for the past week. It's allowed my body to stabilize and has taken some of the strain off my infected kidneys. Work has been awesome especially when they realized that I just couldn't handle a full 8 hour shift with all the bending, stretching, picking up, etc that goes on as a cake decorator. Even my manager told me to go home, and that shocked me as my past managers have had the philosophy that unless you're wearing a toe-tag then your butt better be at work. Apparently I kinda look like hell, but I think each day is a little better. I've been really surprised how many people noticed that I was out of work, found out that that I had surgery, and have stopped by/called/brought flowers. It's....amazing. Astounding. And flattering. I've always tried to be friendly with people at work but you never really notice how you effect other people. Ya know?

    How have you been?

  7. So I've always been sensitive to smell, and have always noticed the way people smell (not that I go around sniffing people). Personally unless I've worked out I've never really noticed my own scent to really change much. Yet now that I've been sleeved for a couple of weeks and have dropped a lot of weight fast I notice that...well...a few hours after I shower I seem to start smelling like I've been running a 2 mile exercise routine. (I really can't believe I just admitted that). Kinda a sour smell, which I've always associated with people who are sick. Granted summer is coming, and granted I'm on a ton of medicines right now because of complications I had....but has this happened to anybody else? I'm seriously contemplating switching antiperspirants and soap. Or taking 3 showers a day......

  8. I felt bruised on the inside, but I mostly felt pain from the sutures. It also didn't help that when I woke up from anesthesia I freaked out! I started thrashing and moving about and it really didn't help my surgical sites. There seems to be a wide spectrum in pain for people, but it seems most everyone gets a pain pump after surgery. Hit that thing a few times and you wont care whats going on! Good luck, go get a massage, and relax!

  9. Its kind of counter-intuitive in that the longer you lay around after surgery the weaker you get. Not only does moving around help with blood flow and help clear your lungs, but it also helps you heal faster. You wont magically wake up and feel like walking a mile, but you will get stronger every day. Set yourself small, increasing, goals in how far you're walking and you'll be surprised at how much better you'll start feeling. Good luck!

  10. I was on Topomax for years because of my Migraines. During the month long 'getting up to full strength' incremental dosage increase I developed a severe stutter (thank god it only lasted for a few weeks), memory loss (that's never fully come back, btw), and my taste buds totally changed. Soda tasted flat, apple juice tasted like what I imagine pine sol to taste like, etc. My family actually called it being TopoStupid because I would forget what I was in the middle of saying. Unfortunately it was the only drug that made my migraines go away. I finally decided that I would rather be in pain then continue to take it. Oh, and I never lost any weight on it.

  11. Okay, first, take some Gas X and then some Milk of Magnesia. My doctor told me its not unusual for your BMs to go from regular to once every 3 or 4 days, so don't freak out. Take some pain killers and relax (I assumed you were prescribed some). You had major surgery not to long ago and your body is still healing, it'll be okay. As for moving too fast to the puree stage, think about it this way: it seems everybody here is on a different diet. Some people seem to move to full chewable foods while my doctor still has me sipping my food. There is some relative give and take in the diet. If you're super concerned call your doctor and check, but as long as you don't get a fever or start throwing up I think you'll be okay.

  12. I was just sleeved last week so I haven't been in this situation yet, but I imagine you can order a la carte, ask to share, or just order whatever you want to eat and doggie bag the left overs. If somebody comments on how much you've eaten there's always the 'I had a late lunch' or 'I haven't felt well lately' or 'I'm on a diet and am cutting down on portion sizes'.

  13. Heck, when I woke up from anesthesia I went a bit nuts. For the one thing, they had tied me down during surgery (I don't like being tied down) and I was only half awake and couldn't understand why all these people were touching me and why I hurt so badly. The term "wild woman" was used!

As for when I was fully aware of myself, I halfheartedly regretted my decision until they gave me the pain pump medicine. Sometimes I wonder what the hell I did when I can't get anything down but crystal light Water but then I step on the scale and realize that I've already broken through a barrier that I've been struggling with for years.

In the end I think all of us will look back on these first few weeks and think 'what a breeze' they were, and will be happy with our choice! At least, I hope so! :D

  14. Yeah, I have 6 incisions all over the place so my stomach is looking really weird and ultra-flabby lately! Except in the one point where the cut is about 1.5 inches long (where they pulled the stomach out). That's the one point where my stomach kinda weirdly dimples in. Luckily my dad had the same surgeon 3 months ago and he said that my stomach would equalize out.

  15. Yeah, I'm feeling your pain! My problem, though, is that I can't tolerate most yogurt, pudding, or broth right now because it makes me sick. Luckily I realized some of it was a lactose issue. Have you tried brushing your teeth? It wont help with the texture, but it'll help the hunger pains. Also try the crystal light sugar free hard candies. I crunch down on them so at least I feel like I'm chewing something...

  16. I can definitely vouch for don't buy too many of one size. I bought a pair of size 20 jeans that are already too loose on me and, even with hot Water washing, are loose coming out of the dryer now. I'm going to skip the 18s, since the ones I tried on yesterday are barely tight and buy a pair of 16s in a week or so. But, I can now find jeans at Goodwill rather than needing to buy at regular retail! :)

I'm really ticked off about one thing, though. I've been really working hard on the bike and walking, so now I have no clue what size undies to buy! It's not like I can go in and try them on!

You can try taking a measurement of your waist and then google it to see what size you would be in different brands.
