  1. I am 3 weeks post op and the I can say the waiting for the surgery was worse than the hospital stay. The first few days at home were uncomfortable. food is a pleasure now. I feel full on so little. I feel so in control and enjoy watching cooking shows and preparing food. It really is a dream come true. I think you will entertain and enjoy food just as much if not more. I realized the greatest proponents of this surgery were the ones that have had it. This is all outside of the fact that according to studies my sleep apnea gave me a high chance of dying 10-14 years out. Now that's going away and I went from 3 hypertension medicines to one at 25% of my previous dosage. My doctor predicts I will be off that in 2 weeks. Be brave and it will pay off.

  2. Definitely let your therapist & doctor know about the throwing up! Sometimes a little anti-depressant or change in anti-depressant is all you need.

I think my doctor anticipated that I might experience a depressed period and said "always focus on the health aspect and not the pounds or how I look".

One study my bariartic surgery group mentioned said those that qualify for bariatric surgery have an 8-13 years increase in life span if they have the surgery. What's better than that?

I don't know if you had any co-morbidities but I know my sleep apnea was life threatening.

Hang in there. One day at a time. My prayers for your quick recovery and turnaround.

  3. The only way I can get it in is to sip, sip and sip all day. Right now I am home recuperating after my 9/5 surgery so I give 100% attention to this.

My nutrition team gave me a 1 oz cup and told me to drink one of these every 5 minutes. In the beginning I walked while I drank to let gravity help it along. Especially when drinking the thick shake.

I do get tired & need some lay down time but don't want to stop drinking. I make a mountain of pillows so I am reclining in the bed and the Water still flows. The ice idea is also great. Hang in there. It gets better and easier.

You should let your doctor know the shortfall. Dehydration is the #1 reason for readmission to the hospital after gastric surgery.

  4. I suffer from headaches alot, have for years. The best thing i have found is Excedrine. The problem is that it contains caffeine, and I'm told no more caffeine after the surgery. And of course it will be a while after the surgery before i can swallow pills. Any suggestions?

They told me tylenol was o.k. and they actually sent me home from the hospital on 9/7 with a prescription for for hydrocodone with acetaminophen. I've had 2 headaches and it took care of both of them right away. Swallowing pills has been o.k. for me post-op.

Excedrin not only has caffeine but it has aspirin so definitely watch out. They told me aspirin is a big no no before and even after surgery unless I consult with the doctor.

Good luck and keep us posted

  5. My surgey was yesterday. Went well! Hiatal (sp) hernia repaired too. Clear liquids today. No more IV fluids as my intake is good and output good too.small pain, easily managed. Walking worked to get rid of gas pain, and I can feel air rolling around in my tummy! No doubt I will be passing gas soon, sorry if tmi. Nurses are very helpful and encouraging. Hooray, hoping to go home tomorrow or Friday.

    Great news!!! :)

The gas can take a few days but everyone is different. I came home Saturday and the gas did not fully leave until about yesterday, Tuesday. I did a lot of walking, some gas-x and a hot pad helped. Just remember every day it gets better and better.

  6. I had my RNY surgery 9/5 and the gas seems to be the worst of it. I am walking a lot but will try the heating pad and maybe gas x later. Thanks for the advice postings. :)

  7. I just had my surgery 9/5 so I am not at your stage yet.

However, I do know the recommendations on my bariatric group's plan calls for everything other than the Protein shake/jello/yogurt to be pureed from after 14 days and for 4 weeks hence. Maybe pureeing the food would work. You are eating the food as recommended but just a little more broken down. Most pureeing recipes call for a drop of broth to moisten the food once the tuna, chicken etc is put in the blender

I definitely second the advice on sipping. They say being dehydrated is going to make everything harder if not dangerous and I bet digestion is one of those things that is harder.

You are so lucky you have your wife doing it at the same time. Even though she is tolerating the un pureed food maybe she will enjoy it better. Good luck and love to hear how it goes :D

  8. surgery went great on 9/5. I had almost the same experience as everyone else but a little more discomfort with extra gas in my abdominal cavity. The first day home, 9/7, the liquids were very hard to get in but today, 9/8, was easier. I am just taking 2 pain pills today for a little bit of ache type pain in my midsection. The walking has been fine. I feel my best when I walk but it does tire me out fast.

Congratulations everyone!!!! I am just so glad it's over and I am on my way. :D

  9. I'm going in September 5th. At first it all seemed to take forever, pre surgery clearances, nutritionist meetings and now it's speeding up fast.

What a journey this is. Half the people think I am crazy and the other half think I am brave.

  10. I just got my date last week and it's going to be 9/5.

It's been a long journey since June. Lots of doctor visits of various specialties for clearances and I've been on a diet for the last 2 weeks.

I am stocked up on the Vitamins, supplements, ISO Protein Water and Protein Powder for the first 2 weeks of my fluids only diet. I am as nervous as can be but excited to. Best of luck to you and let's keep in touch since we'll be going through the stages almost simultaneously

  11. I am on the pre-surgery diet and was told 8/26, 8/27/ 8,29, 9/3 or 9/5 were going to be dates

I hate this waiting so am happy it's going to happen soon. The pre-surgery diet (morning shake, 28-40grams Protein for lunch & dinner with no Water 30 min before or after the meal, only 2 slices high Fiber bread the whole day, 3 1/2 cup fruit, 2 small Protein Snacks, supplement regime, etc. etc) is going to great and actually causing me to drop already.

My hospital just made the top 10% of all U.S. Bariatric Centers! The report is here if you want to check it out: http://www.healthgrades.com/quality

It would be great if we all keep track of each other and if we get advice on other forums from experienced sleevers and post it here so we don't all miss anything.

  12. I am waiting for a surgery date and have looked up every side effect and complication so I am prepared. I did come up with a lot of information about hair loss and most said it was temporary due to an accelerated life cycle of your hair.< /p>

here is where I received most of the information:
