  1. I had surgery on 8/26 and I was feeling the same up until today. What has helped me a lot is weaning off my Percocet - I'm now on just Tylenol and my head feels so much clearer. Also figuring out some real foods I could have on the liquid diet, instead of the fake sweet Protein shakes, and getting at least 40 grams in. So far my favorites have been refried Beans thinned with broth, heated with a bit of velveeta and salsa then blended. Also low fat small curd cottage cheese which my doc ok'ed for liquids. Tonight I'm having some Soup I bought from the grocery store deli, blended. Hang in there - it gets better eventually! I've also been sleeping on the couch and take 1 or 2 naps per day, and try to get out and walk twice a day.

    Not eating enough....

Sorry, I didn't mean I was planning to add a protein bar at this point (I realize that's a no no at 3 days post op), I meant that maybe the original poster should try that.

    Not eating enough....

I'm only 3 days post-op and having trouble getting more than 30 grams of Protein in. I'm hoping it gets better as I heal and my nausea goes away. Maybe try adding a Protein Bar as a snack?
  4. I had my surgery yesterday morning and I'm having bouts of nausea, especially when I get up to walk around or it's been awhile since I had something to "eat". Anyone else go through this? Any advice? Since I can't eat a lot at once, I wonder if I should try to eat small amounts every couple hours.

    Nausea?

I talked to the physicians assistant and she called in some zofran for me. Hopefully that helps - she said the pain meds I'm on could be a contributing factor and I'm not ready to stop those yet.

    Nausea?

I have a patch behind my ear that's supposed to control nausea for 3 days but it doesn't seem to be working. I'll call my docs office as soon as they open.
  7. Good luck to the upcoming bandsters! Today is day 2 for me and I'm not feeling too well. Having some nausea and a lot of pain in my belly when I move. I have to force myself to eat and drink. So far I've had approx 27 grams of Protein and less than 400 cals today. I'm supposed to work up to 40 grams - that seems so difficult right now. Still really glad I had this done. I managed two short walks today, not fun but I know how important it is for the healing process. I chose not to tell my mom beforehand because I was worried she would try to talk me out of it and I didn't want to deal with that stress (it's happened before). I called her yesterday and she was very supportive and understanding - no guilt trip about not telling her earlier. That was a nice surprise. My spouse has been a huge help in caring for me. I feel very lucky to have such a great support system!
  8. Doing well with my Percocet. I drank about 3 oz of protein drink and had a half cup of puréed potato leek soup with a bit of velveeta and dried skim milk mixed in. I'm trying to get my fluids in but it's difficult at this point. Really wish I could take a long hot shower now, but gotta wait till tomorrow afternoon.

    Just got my band today

Congrats! I got mine today too, also little pain, although I have discomfort in my shoulders as well as my belly when I go from sitting to standing. I'm sure the Percocet has a lot to do with it (I have a sensitivity to Vicodin so they gave me something stronger). I am super tired right now. Good on you for walking - that is really key to feeling better sooner. I took one short wall this afternoon and will go for another this evening.
  10. I am officially banded now! Surgery wasn't too bad - not at least in my experience since my last one was a major spinal fusion with 6+ hours in the OR. The worst part so far has been tightness of breath. Ive been using my spirometer regularly to open my lungs. The small bit of Protein shake I've had so far tasted amazing after 3 days of sf Jello. I'm sore but already walking around the block which helps. The doc did find a hernia which was repaired. Question - for those with hernias, did it add to your recovery time? I planned to take a week off work, but that was band only. I'll ask my doc too but curious what others experiences
  11. Good luck! I'm getting banded tomorrow as well. I only had a 3 day Clear liquids diet which was not too bad, but I've been much more tired than normal and feeling a bit shaky today. I'm so done with sf Jello and I can't wait to have my first few sips of Protein shake post-op. This will be my third surgery so not too nervous - if I can make it through a big time spinal fusion I can make it through this. Best of luck to all of the other late Aug bandsters!

Good luck! I'm getting banded tomorrow too.

    Help!!!

Also, for future fills, would they let you work flex hours on that day? I'd schedule the latest possible fill time, and come in super early if they'd let you so you can still get 8 hours of work in. Also, I forgot to add - it seems normal to require you to use either vacation or sick for the time you are off. I'm planning to take a week and will use my 4 remaining sick days, plus one vacation. If you run out, will they let you take unpaid time off if needed?

    Help!!!

Does your company have an HR person you can talk to? If you are in the US, are you eligible for FMLA? It sounds like your boss is putting a lot of pressure on you, and you need to make sure you are putting your own health first. Your doctor should be dictating when you are able to return to work and when you are able to fly, not your boss' desires. Good luck, I know that's a stressful situation to be in.
  15. Hi everyone, I'm Amy. I start my 3 day clear liquids diet today and will have surgery on Monday. It's been really helpful to read everyone's experiences so far.
  16. I got a call from my insurance today and they've approved my surgery! I'm scheduled for Aug 26th. I feel very fortunate because they will pay 100% of the cost. I was right on the borderline of a 40 BMI with no major comorbidities other than back pain/arthritis, so I was a bit worried about getting approved. Now the questions: My doctors office says no gum, which I hadn't heard before. Something about swallowing air when you chew it. Anyone else have this restriction? I only take 1 pill a day right now (antidepressant) and its small, but I wonder if that will be an issue in the first couple of weeks? Did anyone have to switch to liquid prescriptions?

    Booked for my band

Hi, I'm Amy, also 32 and getting banded Aug 26th. I'd be happy to be accountability buddies. I like the advice to focus on getting ready. I've already been practicing eating slower and chewing my food more thoroughly. Also trying to get my exercise routine established, and I'm planning to start trying protein shakes to find a couple I can tolerate. I recently discovered that Vitamin cottage sells single serving packets.

    Time between bites

I'm not banded yet, but my surgeon says 1 minute between bites. This is something I have difficulty envisioning because I'm a very rapid eater, especially when I eat alone. The social worker suggested I read while eating - take a bite, read one page, take a bite, read one page, etc. I love this idea.

    length of pre-op

I'll be doing a 3 day clear liquids no sugar diet before surgery in August. Not looking forward to it but I feel lucky I don't need to do something more extended.

such a funny little question ;)

I'm guessing you're asking about the vulva or labia? (The vagina is just the passage, not really sure how you'd lose weight there). I'm not banded yet but when I lost 98lbs via weight watchers, yes, I did lose fat in my groin area.

    August surgery anyone?

I'm scheduled for August 26th. I'll be doing a 3 day sugar free clear liquids diet before hand. My weight is just high enough to put me at a 40 BMI which is a very good thing because I don't have any major comorbidities which my insurance requires for those under 40. Insurance should cover 100% which makes me feel very fortunate.

    Distraction Hobbies

At home I cross stitch, it keeps my hands busy while watching tv. At work if I feel the urge to snack at my desk I listen to audiobooks.
