    New member Banded 9/26

Welcome, and congrats on your surgery. The shoulder pain was definitely the worst of my operation too. I took Gas X, and used a heating pad, walked, and changed positions often. I found that sleeping in my bed wasn't always the most comfy, so I would switch back and forth from my bed to my recliner. That helped a lot. By post op day 5, I was doing regular housework like mopping and light cleaning, so it gets easier. Best wishes on a speedy recovery!

Newly Post-op with heartburn, no fluid in band.

Hey Abby, welcome. Sorry to hear you're having difficulties. I'm almost 8 weeks post op. I never had any issues with heartburn or GERD, except when pregnant. But, my surgeon did give me a script for Prilosec 40 mg, to take for 30 days right after my band surgery. She explained that even though my stomach wasn't 'cut' that it would swell, along with my esophagus, simply due to the trauma of the surgery, and the Prilosec would be proactive to help reduce the swelling, and make eating easier. I also had a hiatal hernia repair at time of banding. I would say do as the nurse suggested, try the Prilosec, make sure you take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and give it time to take effect. Also, my surgeon said to stay on blander foods, she said no tomato soup, it's very acidic. I hope the Prilosec helps you, and I would definitely follow up with your actual surgeon. And if you are ever in doubt, always place a call, no advice could ever replace your surgeons advice. Best wishes for a safe, speedy recovery

HELP!!!Acid Reflux at night and GURGLING!!! HELP!!!

How does NaNa have a low opinion of the band? She stated medical conditions and facts that could accompany the band. This isn't some fairy tale, complications do arise, although rare. But to say that a fellow band veteran has a low opinion of the band is just so very closed minded. In this case, ignorance is definitely bliss...

HELP!!!Acid Reflux at night and GURGLING!!! HELP!!!

Just cause a person has had two bands, it doesn't mean it's something they did wrong. I've heard of veterans who have had band replacements due to port leaks, or band leaks. It's silicone, it can fail. JS

HELP!!!Acid Reflux at night and GURGLING!!! HELP!!!

Sorry, but The Lap Band isn't all sunshine and rainbows. People do have complications. Last time I checked, this was a forum, to share info (good and bad) and to support others, and tell of our journeys. Support isn't always positive. Sharing concern is support. As for you saying that NaNa should only give encouragement, well that's just ignorant. By having a blind eye to issues, you could cost a person their health or band. I personally would appreciate any and all advice from a Lap Band veteran. I choose to be informed. Knowledge is power. NOT ignorance and turning a blind eye to the possible truth. This forum isn't the gospel on banding, just a path to others experiences, if people choose to accept everything that is posted in here, that's just not smart, but weigh all info here and research the conditions to be prepared to discuss with your WL surgeon. I agree 100% with NaNa People need to learn to chillax in here. JS

    overweight and sick...

I love my band, and would do it again if I had to. I've had many surgeries, so it wasn't a difficult decision for me, I just wish I'd done it sooner. I figured, I'm not getting any younger, and it would be more difficult to lose as I got older, plus I wanted to lose it while I was still young enough to enjoy life to the fullest. Best wishes to you

    Burning!!

Sorry you're in pain. All of what you have described is quite normal for 1 day post op. Your port is going to be tender and sore for a while, as Zingy said, it's been sutured to your abdominal muscles. They will pull for a while. As for the burning pain, it's most likely from the severed nerves from being surgically opened. The nerves are burning, sending pain messages to your brain. Take your pain meds now. You will need them for a week or so (everyone heals differently, some quicker than others, and some have more pain tolerance) As for the shoulder pain and not sleeping, I took beano, and walked to move the gas,and I took warm showers to relax my muscles, used a heating pad, and changed positions/locations often while I slept. I slept in a recliner a lot the first few days. But always remember, if ever in doubt, call your WL surgeon. You will get through this!!! Best wishes for a healthy, speedy recovery!

Wth did i do this for?

Also, my WL surgeon gave me a prescription for Prilosec for the first 30 days. She said this would help the swelling of my stomach and protect it. You may want to ask your surgeon if you would benefit from a med like that.

Wth did i do this for?

I agree, it sounds like you may be taking too big of bites and eating too fast. At 3 weeks out I was still on purees. If you ate the soup and chicken that wasn't pureed, maybe your stoma is irritated too. That's why your wl surgeon recommended going back on liquids to give it time to heal. You just need to take it slow, follow doctors orders, and remember your body is trying to adjust to the changes now since being banded. Work with your band and it will love you back Don't give up on your band yet. Best wishes

    Hello, my name is Mike

Hello Michael, and welcome. Wow you have really rallied for a second chance at health and life, and you have done amazing, congrats! You are so very close to your finish line, and I think you are wise to consider banding as a tool to help you achieve your goals. Many obese people have lost weight and maintained that for a while, studies have shown that for many, the most difficult area of weight loss is maintaining their goal for life. Many unfortunately will regain their weight plus more. But now there is Lap Band that can keep us accountable and at goal. I was banded on August 7th and I know without a shadow of a doubt that if it weren't for the band, I would not achieve my goal, and certainly not maintain my loss. I love my band, and would never go back and I would do it all over again if I had to. I had my first fill on Friday, and got 5cc in my 10cc band. I know now how powerful the band is. I have even more control over my weight loss. I've had no complications either. As to you lurking here and seeing many 'stories' of peoples experiences... remember this is a public forum which any one can post. I've seen scammers here, and band haters, and just haters of obese people. If you listen to all advice here, you need to consider the source. I'm not saying the peoples posts you read weren't legit, I'm just saying everyone here may not have a banders best interest at heart. This is where you should ask many questions of your WL surgeon. Maybe attend a local support group and talk to banders in all stages of their journey, so you can see in person how wonderful Lap Bands really are. One of the most important things to remember if you get banded is COMPLIANCE, many of those that fail or complain of their bands have not followed their WL surgeons recommendations. Compliance is key. No doubt that you would do well with a Lap Band, since you have already been so disciplined in your weight loss on your own. The band will help you get to goal, and keep you there. I wish you the best, and a speedy, safe journey to your goal!!!

PPIs and acid-blockers .. Do you take them?

I had a hiatal hernia as well, but never had any symptoms. I'm 4 weeks out from surgery today. So I'm interested to see if I develop reflux now. I sure hope not. If I was a fatty without reflux, I surely don't want it post band!

    feeling guilty

Fatty liver aside, I think it's about our choice to become banded. We have to leave our old habits and become disciplined with a new diet. No better time to begin than the few weeks leading up to surgery. It does get easier as your pre op diet goes on. You have to remember its was a choice to change lifestyles and stick with it. Just cause you get banded doesn't mean there isn't any more work to do. You have to stay disciplined. You can do it! Best Wishes

PPIs and acid-blockers .. Do you take them?

I'm taking Prilosec. My surgeon said it helps reduce stomach swelling right after surgery. So it's only for 30 days, then I'm finished with it.

Stuck episode- no fluid in band

Hey Conner, I was banded about 3 1/2 weeks ago, and my band is empty now too. I had more of a PB episode with a piece of chicken. I think the bite was too big, and I didn't chew it enough. I knew what was happening, just from reading the posts on here, and talking to other bandsters. Nonetheless, it was eye opening. I just stood up and started walking until it came back up. It was uncomfortable for a few minutes, but it taught me to slow down, cause I can definitely notice my band now. I can only imagine what my first fill will be like if I don't learn to slow down and take smaller bites. Best wishes Conner

advice.. haven't lost any in 2 weeks

I've had the same problem, girlgetsLB. My surgery was August 7th and I lost 21 pounds in 20 days. Then the scale didn't change for a couple weeks, so I stopped obsessively weighing and just continued my routine. I noticed my clothes are still getting bigger and it seems I'm losing inches too. I have my first fill in a little less than 3 weeks, and it's going to be 5 cc's my surgeon said. So with that, I hope to start moving the scales in the right direction. Best wishes
  24. I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡

    Periods

I was also banded on August 7th, but mine came right on time, August 11th. Could be the surgery, trauma or the drugs that you were given. I would call your doctor and discuss it with a nurse, they may want you to come in for a test. Good luck to you

    wow...bad news

I'm so sorry to hear that you received bad news. I think talking with a person you trust would be therapeutic. I would also suggest prayer if you're religious. Anything to take your mind off of food would be helpful, such as the gym or a walk, that would raise your endorphins. God Bless you.
