  1. I had to do a 3 month supervised diet....I did weight watchers and went to my doctor monthly for weigh ins and talk to him about my diet and exercise.
  2. Sorry you are feeling so crummy. I think the first week is the worst. It gets better from there! I luckily didn't have any problems with nausea once I got home. But I can tell you I did indeed have the "what in the world have I done" thoughts. That is perfectly normal and will get better too. Now that all my clothes are getting baggy and the scale is starting to move, I am totally happy with my decision! I would never have made it to where I am without my band. Hang in there!
  3. I definitely liked the number when I stepped on it the first thing this morning in my nightgown, but was a bit shocked to think I'd lost 5 pounds in 2 days when the scale wasn't budging before. Which is why I weighed again in clothes and saw it was the same as 2 days prior. I had been avoiding the scale since it was hardly budging, but decided to give it a try last friday and was shocked to see I was down almost 10 pounds since I weighed a couple of weeks ago. I guess fixing the constipation issue helped quite a bit! My biggest concern with going with the number with the least amount of clothing and then stepping on the doctors scale fully clothed and seeing a higher number is the self esteem issue, like someone else mentioned. Thanks for the feedback.
  4. I was worried about the same thing. My bariatric office told me they look at the starting BMI and related co morbidities. They said the purpose of the supervised weight loss (mine was 3 months) is to see that you can follow a plan and can lose some weight before they invest the money in the surgery. My doctor also turned in my past weight loss attempts, how much I lost then and then later regained. My PCP had to write a letter of recommendation as well. Since I had lost 20 pounds during the supervised weight loss, he didn't feel I needed to follow through with surgery. So in the letter he didn't out and out recommend the surgery, but did say that I would benefit from it. My BMI went from 35 to 33 during that attempt and I was still approved....Thank Goodness!

    Just a little rant...

As a newer member, I found it very difficult to put info in the profile, sometimes, I had to enter info multiple times before it stayed. It took me 3 weeks and multiple attempts to get a picture to upload. I use my laptop, and no, I am not the most computer savvy person. Does anyone know if there is a place where you can find directions on how to load pictures and enter data? That might be a little helpful as well. I saw another post this morning where someone mentioned having a hard time starting a thread and updating there status. I totally get what you are saying! (just looking from the other side)

    Chewing...

I would suggest talking with your nutritionist, see if they have thoughts? I've read somewhere about the risk of maladaptive eating, which includes all sorts of things like staying on liquids too long, but can't remember where if it was in paperwork my nutritionist gave me or a book I've read. If you are not swallowing your food, you are not getting the essential nutrients that you need. Some days I have to really concentrate on chewing enough.

    advice.....

My belly hurt when I laughed for about 3 weeks after surgery. There is a lot of swelling from the manipulation and surgery itself. So the soreness should get better with time. I remember how much it bothered me to lay on my side without a pillow under my side to help support things. A little bit of pulling on the muscle and sutures made it tender. Don't worry about the scale numbers, which is so hard to do. My first week I felt the same way, I gained 3 pounds according to the scale. Most of it is Fluid retention. Surgery puts a lot of stress on your body. As you heal and your diet and exercise progress, you will start to see the numbers change. I've lost 5 pounds since day of surgery a month ago, but like carolinagirl said, my clothes are much looser than they had been, so I am still losing something. I know all this, but it is still hard to swallow when you step on the scale, which is why I only do it once a week. You'll get there, we all will!
  8. Congratulations!! I am hoping to join you within the next week!

    Flat out Bread

I got some the other day, haven't tried it yet, it's in the freezer. I've got a feeling my nutritionist will want me to avoid it since she wants me to stay away from the wheat crackers (which were on my list of things I could have!).
  10. Walking is your best friend right now! Hang in there.
  11. Had my post op visit today and ended up in tears. I am three weeks out, my appointment was bumped twice last week because my surgeon was stuck in surgery. She weighed me and I have lost 5 pounds since day of surgery. It was a bit of a disappointment. I was hoping for more. I know that is still good, the avg of 1-2 pounds per week. My clothes are all getting big and my blood pressure is the best it's ever been. I've even stopped one of my blood pressure meds. So why the hang up with the number on the scale?? Met with the nutritionist as well. She says I am doing everything I am supposed to. Drinking the Water, getting the Protein, exercising. She reminds me that the band is about slow, steady and able to maintain weightloss. So why do I feel like I have failed? It reminds me of my divorce.....in my head I know it was the right thing, but my heart is still having trouble catching up. I know not to compare myself to others and to treasure my successes. I didn't gain it all overnight, why would I expect to lose it so quickly. The emotions are on overdrive today. Trying to stay focused and not let the head hunger games take over. Have to wait 3 more weeks for my first fill.
  12. Like the others have said, I would talk with your doctor. Does it occur when changing positions? (going from sitting to standing) could be low blood pressure. If you are on meds, like I am, they may need to be adjusted. Over a year ago, I was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope where I would have random dizzy spells without position changes and actually briefly passed out with one, so I was started on a beta blocker to prevent that. Could be from dehydration or low blood sugars, only way to know for sure is to get it checked out. Hope you feel better soon.
  13. Clear liquids are pretty much anything you can see through..water, apple juice, jello. non clear would pretty much be any other liquid...milk, cream soups etc. mushies that I could have was scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, mashed potatoes. My office gave me a list with examples as the diet progressed. Good luck!
  14. Sounds like you are well prepared! Best of luck! Everything will be just fine!
  15. I would absolutely call the office and clarify what is going on. It's better than getting a big surprise come Monday morning. Good luck!

    I deserve to be thin...

Way to go! It is sometimes hard not to listen to those little demons in our heads, but what a great victory when we can shut them out.

    Feelings of failure

I always thought others would think I was taking the easy way out as well, which is why I haven't told very many about my decision. I'm only 4 weeks post op and nothing about this has been easy. It's been a learning process, not only how to eat (chew, chew, chew and chew some more) and what to eat (making sure it's Protein packed). I still have so much to learn. Good luck!

    40 pounds down!!!!!

Congratulations on all of your hard work, it's paying off!
  22. Since I was on liquids the first week post op, I premade meals for them that could just be heated up. I also avoided the dinner table that week! Good luck!
  23. No words of wisdom here, I have to wait another 3 weeks. Just wanted to wish you luck, I'm sure you will do just fine!

    Help with different workout methods.

Planks are a good total body toner. (arms straight out in front of you on the floor feet on the floor, kind of like push up position and hold for 2-3 minutes at a time) Crunches on an exercise ball, you can do all kinds of things on an exercise ball, kneel on the floor in front of the ball with your forearms resting on the ball and roll out and back in while tightening your abs. lay on the floor and lift your legs up in the air and write out the ABC's with your feet together. To work on love handles: stand sideways next to a wall, put your arm out to the side with hand on the wall and drop your hips towards the wall, keeping your feet in place on the floor. I learned all these in boot camp last summer. They sound easy to do, until you try them, takes time to develop strength. These are just a few ideas. Good luck!
  25. Any kind of activity is good. I like to walk, preferably outside. Though on rainy days I will resort to the elliptical in the garage. I also have a stretchy band and some hand weights. There are all kinds of things you can do without going to the gym. I've had some videos as well, but I do better when I can go outside and "get away" from things at home. It's harder to quit that way too. If I am a mile away from home I have no choice but walk back home. If walk an mile on a treadmill and I get bored I can easily hop off. I've even thought about dusting off my bike and going on some bike rides with my daughter this summer. My only advice would be to experiment until you find something you enjoy. Have fun!
