  1. I wonder what type of surgery James Packer had? He looks great after losing 35kgs. I've read that it was gastric bypass surgery and I've also read it was lap band. Interesting to know which one and Joe Hockey the politician also reportedly had gastric bypass surgery too. I wonder why they had that instead of the sleeve?

Joe hockey had the gastric sleeve.... Back in December... ( write up in melb herald sun)

  2. Hi Deb - though I am technically about three months out, due to complications (leak etc) I have only been eating and drinking without a drip for (almost) six weeks. I ate about half of a six inch sub, bun and all. Which is a HUGE amount (if I eat bread, I can usually have about a quarter of a sandwich over about 30 minutes). Today I ate far too late and far too fast. And really, far too much. I did chew it well but didn't give myself enough time. And I also had soda Water today which I don't think was a great idea :) So it was several stupid things today! Overconfident much??? LOL...

Oh gosh u have sure been through the wringer....I do hope it all settles down for you very soon and you can begin to lead a normal life with your food....I'm still on purée, so not sure how ill go with normal foods yet....but scared about that part actually...but also looking forward to eating normal foods...

  3. Ugh - had a little (couple of bites) of a meatball sub today and it was a BAD idea. It sits really poorly in my tummy. Not nice. I've done this with a few things lately :( I am going to go back to basics and see if that feels any better :)

Sorry to see you have had troubles eating normal foods, so long past your surgery date. Did you chew your meatballs super well, did you eat the bun? I'm not sure I'm looking forward to that happening....

Have you spoken to your dietitian or doctor about this??

  4. There is a gastric sleeve support group in australia but I find it very hard to navigate around that site, so I only use this one on VST and I am in the Gastric Sleevers Australia group on Facebook which is also great. Otherwise if you are looking for a specific topic, go to the GSS group as it has threads to all different topics..I go there is after specific information on a topic

Thanks for this Junior Guru, I'll look into that one...but is the Facebook one a public one..that all my fb friends can see...I wouldn't want that...

  5. I think that's a GREAT IDEA, no offence to the rest of the world....it would be great to read more local experiences, without having to scan through the multitudes of o/s posts. Weights in kgs not pounds! Etc.

there is one called Gastric Sleeve Forum..it too is a worldwide one..but I must have only registered for Australia or something, as it seems. Most posts are from aus.

    Cheers

Sorry ...that's Gastric Sleeve Support! Not forum ...

  6. Hey do you think we should start an Australian VSG group? I think it might be better than using the one thread because you can have different topics, is that right?

I'm thinking it might help down the track if people are trying to look things up.

  7. Hi ya west Aussie here sleeved 15 days ago

Hi from Victoria...welcome to the forum...I'm only on day 11 post op...and so far everything is going along really well... I ate a poached egg for breaky this morn...chopped the life out of it and I think it took me around 35 minutes to eat it, but did leave a little for my dog! But it was good to taste something other than purée food..

  8. Quick update. Just had my 3.5 month check with the NUT and surgeon. They said that I have lost 124% of my excess weight. They're concerned that I lost 4.5kg in one week, when I was sick. They're not at all worried about me gaining 1.5kg back since then, even though I am. So, as of today, I'm 167cm tall, 65.9kg with a bmi of 23.6. I am now 8kg away from goal.

Fantastic work ! You have done so well and in only 3.5 months...this is very encouraging! Thank you for sharing this...

  9. Well this week starts another chapter...dinner last night - vitamised chicken, mushroom and asparagus risotto with shredded Parmesan..mm mmmm ! Not to bad really, had it again tonight. Although I did make the tuna, veg and macaroni from my dietitians booklet...but by the time I made it, didn't feel like eating it, hubby liked it though (unvitamised, of course)

I had my drain tube and all my staples removed today, YAY!!!

Thought I would give peach iced tea a go for another Fluid option, but nup...didn't enjoy it at all and I usually love it..

Dessert tonight - nestle diet choc mousse, fabulous!!!

Feeling quite happy with today...!! :-)

  10. Hello all, I went back to work today for the first time in three months. I only stayed until 2:30 and man, I am wiped out. I can't believe how tired I am! Had lunch at work - a quarter of a ham, cheese and Tomato sandwich - it took an hour to eat it but it stayed down :)

I am on normal foods now which is great. I eat very little which I knew before the surgery would be the case but I get such a kick out of how little I eat. I am not trying not to eat much, I simply can't eat much. I just eat often now, every two hours or so during the day if I can manage it. I find that my body tells me if I need food now which I don't remember experiencing before (or if I did, I was able to ignore it

I have been having crackers as Snacks which has been really good. I am going to keep a packet of lesnack in my bag at all times from now on for food "emergencies" lol and some nuts. I am finding that the hardest thing is remembering to be prepared.

I tried a soft drink over the weekend. This is what I found - I can get away with a few sips but do NOT try to drink a whole glass for two reasons. One, it is so damn sickly sweet I feel like I need to brush my teeth and two, the bubbles do not sit well (yet). Not painful just gassy and uncomfortable. A good reason to avoid them for sure!

I find that I can have carbs (I know some people struggle with this) but just very little - bread sits okay, I just get really full. I had a little Pasta recently (none since lol) and I can eat about 5-6 pieces of spiral Pasta and that is it. Rice is just as bad.

Generally I am finding the best stuff is veggies and some kind of Protein, mostly red meat for Iron. I am going to try some fresh fruit tomorrow and yoghurt for lunch which I am looking forward to since I just haven't been able to fit any fruit in since the surgeries.

Anyway, things continue to improve very slowly. Hope you're all well!

    Cheers, Lila

Well done lila, to save me going back on past posts, when did you have your surgery. Where, how much did you start at, where are you now. It is so good to see how fellow Aussie sleevers are going.... Thank you for your post. All the best.

    Debbie

  11. Thank you....my goal is to lose around 35-38 kgs.... Some may say, wow that's not much, but sadly it is....I almost tipped the 100kgs before my decision to have the surgery. Yes, you may say ...that's not crazy overweight compared to some on here. BUT, I am only barely 5 feet tall.... !! So yes, it is extremely overweight for someone my height. I will be extremely happy if I reach 60kgs, but will also be happy around 65 too...we'll see how things go....I was ecstatic when I broke out of the 90's, last Friday after my surgery... And a very happy and satisfied smile appears on my face each time I see a change in that number! :-)

  12. Wow, Shelley, you sure have a strong exercise program....I have never ever Been a keen exerciser! Maybe that will change once I lose more weight, and my short legs can actually carry the body attached to them!

Gosh! Ozeedonkee, you are keen to try the salmon....I was told ONLY anything that will go through a straw smoothly, for the first week. Tomorrow I will move to the next phase, which I have to check in my dietry booklet.

  13. Hi Deb' date=' thanks for the update and I am very pleased it all went smoothly for you. The next few weeks will continue to feel strange as you get used to your new little tummy, but once you are back on normal foods it will became easier. Let us know if you have any questions along the way as there is a depth of experience on this thread.[/quote']

    Thank you KelliV

I will do that. Hopefully I can continue to go smoothly as I have been. I understand it will be my own fault if I encounter a problem, because I ave eaten or drunk something to fast or too much of. I think that's why, so far it's been ok... I don't like pain ! ;-)

  14. I am in Melbourne Australia. I had my surgery last Monday 12th November (afternoon surgery) in recovery by 4.45pm, back to my room by around 8.15 ( purely because of busy staff and time) I was attached to my "best friend" morphine button, relief on demand... Oh wow, what a wonderful thing. Every time I could feel the deferred shoulder pain start to emerge, I push the button - almost instant relief!

Day 2 (Tuesday) still on saline drip for fluids, having trouble taking anything, even Water, so ice cubes were it. I was up and walking first thing, feeling not to badly, Until my breaky tray appeared. This was not good, this was a set back as it made me feel quite nauseous. Anti nausea Medication for this seemed to work a little. Nothing to "eat or drink" for Tuesday.

Day 3 (Wednesday) up and about again, still definitely not fussed with the meal trays, but trying harder to get the fluids in via ice blocks and water and flat lemonade, going along ok. The morph button (IV) was removed today, a sad parting, but probably for the best. The shoulder pain was controlled by some IV panadole, not quite as good, but hey, it worked eventually. The IV needle in my wrist area, was quite sore, so it was removed as I still had another IV in further up my arm, that wasn't being used. This one would not flush clear, so it was also removed. HOORAY, I was free!!!! Wednesday night was a "nightmare" in my room, so much noise from the staff and incoming new patients (at 11-35PM!!) the rest of the night, I was in a very disturbed sleep.

Day 4 ( Thursday) My doctor was in quite early on this day, suggesting I could go home! THIS WAS MUSIC TO MY EARS!! I was originally told it would prob be Friday! I was out of there by 9.45am , on my way home! Trying to keep up my fluids, resting ( in a quiet environment) was going well. I tried the solvable panadole, but just couldn't get it down. So I used a heat pack to relieve the shoulder pain when it happened. No more pain relief. Getting in more fluids each day. sleeping better. I was on the road to recovery.

Day 5 (Friday) Today, I had some very watery Soup, - a full cup, sipped from a teaspoon over the course of the whole day. I never felt hungry at any time. Fluids going in much better today. Shoulder pain subsiding. Headaches disappearing, as I was more hydrated.

Day 6 (Saturday) much the same as Friday, only, I able to get more fluids in. Flat lemonade, cup of tea and today I vitamised a can if chicken and veg soup, which I watered down with boiling water. This went down well. Any Soups or heavier fluids I am taking, do take me forever to get down, but that doesn't bother me. I'm just happy to be able to do this without any bad affects. Oh and I also started to have frosty fruit icy poles today too, these are good!

Day 7 (Sunday) one week down and 3kgs (approx 6.6lbs) down, since my surgery. Total lost since I saw my doctor to book this date (9th oct 2012) - 10 kgs (22lbs) ... No need for painkillers ! I AM VERY HAPPY with how this is going! LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FUTURE, TO HAVE A LONG AND HEALTHY ONE, to enjoy my beautiful granddaughter and family. This was a very good decision to make.
