  1. So sorry to hear that you weren't able to be sleeved. Hoping you heal quickly and get the surgery soon.
  2. We have a NYC/LI/Tri-state BP support group that meets quarterly. Feel free to PM me or my co-leader Lisa for more info if you are interested.
  3. Great tips Alex. The chicken paninis are pretty good options at Starbucks. That and a cup of regular coffee works very well for a healthier option. I even have a regular burger once in a while. If you eat it without the bun or half a bun, you're fine. Like you say, just don't panic and don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. You can eat fast food once in a while and not get totally derailed.
  4. Woo Hoo!! I got an email invite to a work reunion on the 26th. I've seen a number of these folks since I left the company in 2007 so many of them have seen me both larger and smaller. But for those who I haven't seen in a while...oh boy!!! I can't wait to walk into that bar and soak up the compliments. I know I've said in the past that I don't care to be scrutinized even if it's positive but I'm not looking to show these folks up...they were all very kind to me no matter what my size. I just want to share my success with them and I can't wait till the get together. What a change up from getting invites to things and the first thing I think about is 'can I get there with the pain I'm in?' or 'what in the world will I wear (fit into)' I bet it will be a blast.
  5. I have never met such a strong group of people as are here on this forum. I am honered to know each and every one. @@JustWatchMe, I have been following your story and am in awe of your strength and determination. I am so glad to call you friend and so happy for you for taking this important step to get your life back. You are an amazing woman. Congratulations on each and every accomplishment. Liz
  6. You don't necessarily have to be in the 'right frame of mind' to be ready for surgery. I went into it kicking and screaming. The difference is though, I knew I had no choice. I was facing life in a wheelchair if I didn't lose weight. That's a tremendous motivator. If you are not motivated because you are happy with your body and you have no co-morbidities, I question whether or not you can be compliant with post surgery protocol. Only you know whether or not to move forward on this, but you asked for opinions, and I gave you mine. Good luck with whatever you decide.
  7. Check with your HR department at work as well. My company subsidizes 'healthy' lifestyles. They give us $300 towards diet plans like Weight Watchers and gym memberships as well. It doesn't cover the whole cost, but hey...$300 is still $300.
  8. Congrats Julie. One of these days I'd like to take the plunge myself into the plastic surgery pool. So.... I got on the scale this morning and I'm up to 116 1/2 lbs. I've been doing a little too much grazing since I've been in Florida. Got to cut this **** out. I worked way too hard to backslide now. Oh...I have a date tomorrow night and another one on Saturday. Two different guys. This multiple dating thing is fun but also a bit exhausting trying to remember what I said to who...lol.
  9. Water exercise is the best. I was walking/dogpaddling in the water when my hips were horribly painful. After they were replaced, I started to exercise in the pool 3X a week and I make sure to go as often as I can. As far as what we look like in bathing suits, I went in the water at 250 lbs. and I go in the water now...at 113 lbs. and very wrinkled upper legs/thighs. When I see an obese person in the pool, all I think is good for them for trying to improve their lives. That's how you should approach it if you're uncomfortable in a bathing suit.
  10. Eat sashimi. It's just the raw fish and if you cut the sliced fish into small pieces, you should be fine. For Chinese food, stay away from anything fried. I find that steamed fish is very band friendly. Just remember that both Chinese and some of the Japanese food is fairly high in sodium.
  11. My grandson is due in five weeks and I'm so excited to be a healthy grandma for this one. My granddaughter is 10 and for half her life, I was so terribly limited with what I could do with her. I did the best I could and in the end, spending time with her was the most important thing but I have to say that I can't wait till I can take this little guy to the park and climb the monkey bars and go on the swing and slide and teeter-totter with him.
  12. Fish, fish, and more fish. I wasn't a fish eater before. Oh, I'd have it once in a while, but why eat fish when you can eat veal parm and spaghetti? Well, obviously I choose to eat smarter these days and have found that fish can be very tasty...and is very band friendly. I eat at Greek restaurants alot more than I used to because for whatever reason, the Greeks know how to make a great piece of fish...simply grilled and even without sauce.
  13. I didn't take pics in Florida but I just put the suit on in my bedroom and took this picture. It's not a great shot because of the flash, but you can see my body and legs and that's all that matters. I hate how they look and I don't know for sure if mom was just playing down how bad they are. I'd appreciate honest feedback from anyone who cares to comment.
  14. I took another big step a few days ago. I wore a bathing suit that did not have a skirt. I have very wrinkled upper legs and thighs and usually look for a skirt to cover what I can. I couldn't find a suit I liked with a skirt this time around though I did find some very nice one piece tank style suits. I look fine in one except for the legs. My tummy doesn't pouf out like it used to, nor does my behind so I put it on and had my mom give me her opinion and she said that I'm way more aware of the loose skin than anyone else would be and that I shouldn't worry about my legs. So, I wore it to the pool when I was in Florida last week. I tried to not think about it and just to go about my business but I can tell you that I felt so much lighter in the Water without the skirt material swirling around. I will just have to try to not be so critical of myself and enjoy the accomplishments I've made rather than focusing on what I can't change at the moment...or perhaps ever.
  15. Everyone's 'normal' is their own. If you need an adjustment, make an appointment with your doctor. Discuss with him or her if what you are feeling is real or head hunger. Then you can make the decision regarding a fill. Good luck.
  16. Hi all. My bariatric surgery supports a yearly clothing exchange. I couldn't make the one last year but I have some items to donate and I want to bring them down...and meet other WLS folk. I thought those who are in the vicinity might be interested in both donating and taking advantage of the clothing that is available. Hope to see some of you there. HERE COMES ANOTHER… GREATER NEW YORK BARIATRIC SURGERY CLOTHING EXCHANGE [For Men and Women Who Have Had or Are Scheduled for the Procedure] Join us in midtown Manhattan Saturday * March 21, 2015 * 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Where: BOTTOMLESS CLOSET [in the Hotel Pennsylvania opposite Penn Station & Madison Square Garden] 401 Seventh Avenue, Level B, Suite 40 (bet. If you're able to stay a little past 2:00 to straighten up, please do.
  17. Who says you're doing anything wrong? You said you've lost a lot of inches. That's as important as the number on the scale. If you are replaceing fat with muscle, muscle weighs more than fat so I'd think 20 lbs. is pretty good. I also used Dr. Ren and have been very pleased with her as my doctor. Talk to her and see if she is concerned. If not, again, you are likely doing the right things and shouldn't be overly concerned either. If you need support from fellow bandsters, feel free to PM me or Lisa, or others who are in the NYC area. We also have a face to face support group meeting every two or three months and once the weather finally improves, we'll hold another one. Feel free to join us. Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress.
  18. Hi kitt.. I'm in Aventura... on the border of Dade and Broward.
  19. Hi all. Heard from my son.. more snow up North. The weather here in South Florida has been nothing short of spectacular. Wish you gals could be here with me hanging out poolside.
  20. I'm dating again after being out of the picture for a long time. Will be nice to share stories and info with others getting back in the game.
  21. I'm working with a therapist because I am also trying to figure this all out too. I was a 26/28 and now am wearing a 6 or 8 so I understand your issue very well.
  22. Oh please...lol. I did this at 54 and as you can see from the other posts, there are plenty of people who are older than you. You have lots and lots of years left and there's no reason why you cannot change your life now. The five years prior to my surgery were awful. My world was shrinking as I was getting larger. I'm healthier and smaller than I've been since I was a young woman and I'm living like a young woman again. Age is just a number!
  23. No...I don't have the same tightness issues like most other bandsters because I've never had a fill. That's why I never comment on anything like sliming, getting stuck, being tight, etc. I know, I know...even my bariatric surgeon can't believe that I've been able to stay in the green after all this time with no adjustments.
  24. So I'm packed and ready to head to Florida tomorrow...but as timing is everything..I am suffering from a pretty nasty cold at the moment. I think with so many colleagues sick, I finally succumbed. My nose is sooo red and the skin chapped because of how much I am blowing my nose. But even with a cold, I'm still going to bake in the sun and try to soak up as much of the heat as possible. Was supposed to meet a new guy this afternoon but I canceled...we'll meet up after I'm back. Oh..and I had to buy a smaller wetsuit for the pool. The salesman needed to know what size to bring up from the stockroom and asked me two questions that would have sent me into a tailspin once upon a time. He asked me what I weighed and what size was the dress I had on. First time in a veeery long time that I answered honestly. Have a great Saturday everyone.
