  14. I had my surgery 10/20/11 and my wife had hers 09/01/11. I'm not much of a cook but we purchased a steamer while we were at the pre-op weight loss stage. To this day we use it several times a week. Great kitchen tool! We cook fish and veggies in it all of the time. Fill it with water, set the timer and when it dings dinner is ready. We also purchased a George Foreman grill. Another great tool for grilling fish, chicken and veggies (especially green/red/yellow peppers). Great tool, drains off what little fat there might be and super easy to use. Have our eye on a Vitamix blender but they're pretty pricey so haven't taken the plunge yet but it's definitely coming. There are also tons of high protein, low fat options in your market that require very little prep. You can find lots of great ideas right here on the forum! Congratulations to both of you on your decision!! You're gonna love the new you!!

    Hi Ms. Panda! Sorry for the late reply - was on a little fishing vacation. I use "Tap and Track" which I got from the Apple Apps store. That was the one that had the best reviews when I was looking and I've used it every day since last December. I love it but have heard nothing but good things about "My Fitness Pal" and "Spark People" as well. I don't know if any or all of these have versions for Android and iPhone. I really don't think it matters which one you use but I think it's VERY important to use an app or some kind of journal to record what you're eating. It has helped me in more ways than I could have imagined. I fully expect to be using it for life.

    Hey John. In my case it took me a good month before I had any kind of appetite at all and even then it wasn't much. I think it takes a little time for your mind as well as your body to adjust to the physiological changes. There is a difference between being physically hungry vs. "thinking" you're hungry. I did eventually have those times (still do on occasion) and I always fall back to the protocol. In other words, it should take 20-30 minutes for you to eat. After that, no liquids for at least 30 mins. and an hour is even better (but often hard to do) . When it's been long enough, liquids help a lot if you're still hungry. They're very filling. Just remember to sip and go slowly. You can stretch the pouch with liquids just like you can with solids. Minimum of two hours before you eat again and as I mentioned to you, I never go more than four hours without eating something. chicken, fish and turkey are all excellent sources of "solid" Protein (as opposed to shakes and softer foods) and most folks find solid Proteins to be much more filling. They told us to stop eating "at the first sign of "fullness" in the pouch". Takes a little practice and awareness of what your pouch is saying to you but it quickly becomes automatic. Make sure you log everything that you eat in app and follow the calorie intake recommended by your doctor. It's critically important that the initial setup you do for your app is appropriate for what you're trying to accomplish. For example I set up my app, Tap and Track, to lose two pounds a week and entered in my present and goal weights. It then calculated a diet of roughly 1300 calories a day. Some days I'm under, some I'm over and some I hit it pretty close. I'm still following that exact same plan to this day and I'm almost eight months out. Great tool. I'm heading out tonight for a five day fishing trip in the Eastern Sierras (broken thumb and all!! LOL). Back on Sunday evening and I'll touch base with you then. You are doing absolutely fantastic! Looking forward to hearing the latest weight loss numbers when I get back. Give that baby a hug for me!!

    Panda, what a great post and I can't tell you how much I respect your honesty and courage. I have to say that I have not faced any of these particular kinds of problems but there are no doubt many that have struggled with similar challenges. I would very much like to hear from those folks - who have you strugged with? Why? What kinds of solutions have you tried? What was the result? This forum is about understanding and support. Problems and solutions. I would very much like to hear what has succeeded and what has failed. Perhaps some can share with us their insight on why some people react to friends or family who have RNY in the manner described above by several folks. On what possible basis would people abandon friends and family because of their decision to have this potentially life-changing operation? I do not understand. The more we learn, the more effectively we can offer ideas and support to those facing similar situations.

    Congratulations John!!! Great job! I found the whole getting back to "real" food a little nerve racking as well. The best approach may be to just keep reminding yourself to go s l o w. Chew every bite 20 to 25 times. Take your time and just enjoy it! You'll be amazed how much talking your pouch will do - you just have to listen. LOL!

    I think that it's important to understand that there is risk involved with any surgery and RNY is no exception. There are heartbreaking stories. No one can ever be absolutely certain that the surgery will be successful or that there will not be complications, some quite serious. It's also important to understand that there is risk involved with obesity and with the numerous secondary problems, some quite serious, that often result from being obese.There simply are no guarantees, no absolutes, whichever way you go. I'm almost 33 weeks out, 173 lbs (from a high of 285), and I'd do it again in a second. My wife is 40 weeks out, 199 lbs, and would do it again in a second. My brother is 14 years post-op, 174 lbs, and would do it again in a second. My best friend is 6 years post-op, 225 lbs and celebrates his new life every day. Like many others, I did exhaustive research before making the decision to go under the knife. Based on the most current information available from the very best, most respected, most experienced sources I could find, I concluded that the odds are overwhelmingly in my favor for a successful long term outcome.

    Did a quick Google on it and the first three returns showed 8g for one cup, 15g for one "serving", and 5.9g for one cup. The iPhone version of Tap and Track shows 7.5g for one cup. It's amazing how wide the results can be. I always try to go with the most conservative number when there is any question which would be about 6g.

    Thank you all for the good wishes. Broke down and went to doctor today. No infection but multiple fractures in my thumb. Doctor said a Lab is easily capable of generating force with their jaws exceeding 1000 lbs per square inch - much more than needed to break bones. So they put a splint on my thumb and an incredibly obnoxious bandage. Appointment with orthopoedic surgeon on Monday. I doubt surgery will be needed but can't hurt to get his opinion. Thank you all again. Typing definitely sucks right now but I'll be reading on the sidelines!!
