    Eating Right?

Hi guys! For all of you kind folks who have requested my High Protein Food List, my hundred pound black lab and I had a little accident. The vet gave me a topical antibiotic this morning to spray on a couple of hotspots she has from allergies. First spray and my right thumb kind of wound up in her mouth - when she was closing it. Completely my fault (she really is a sweetie) but she bit right through my thumbnail and a second puncture in the pad of my thumb. It would be fair to say that it smarts a little. More importantly, typing with this rather large bandage on my thumb is something of a comedy routine. Long winded way of asking you guys to forgive me for not replying right away with the list. I absolutely will get it to each and every one of you who requested it - but it may take a couple of days. My apologies for the delay but it's coming!

I Have A Beef With My Doc!

I can appreciate your frustration but I would resist the temptation to vent. Your surgeon is the one person that knows more about your surgery than anyone else and you're going to be under his care for at least a year. That could be a very long year if the relationship is strained. I second bernie - talk to him, explain your concerns and listen to his explanation. You always have the option to change doctors but I would exercise that option only as an absolute last resort. Like I said, he's the surgeon and knows more about your case than any one. I also have worked very closely with my primary care physician since two weeks after my surgery. I've been seeing him for many years and I trust his judgement completely. The physician's assistant at my surgeon's office wrote me a prescription for a slightly low thyroid. The primary said no. The PA put me on iron for a very marginal case of anemia. The primary said no. It never hurts to have a second opinion - especially when it's someone you know and have confidence in.
  6. Welcome to the forum! This is a great place for support and the answers to many questions. Only your doctor can make the determination regarding whether you're a good candidate for RNY but NYU certainly has a great reputation. If it turns out that you are a good candidate, you'll be amazed at the results!! Keep us posted on your progress!

Great job guys! It just keeps getting better and better!!
  8. LOVE your attitude. I truly believe that so much of RNY and really health in general is attitude. When you can stay positive in spite of the rough start you had - nothing can stop you. You're gonna love the new you!!

    Post Op Liquid Diet

My doctor requires 100g of protein a day and that started before I even left the hospital with "clear liquid" protein like Isopure or Cytomax. It seems that 60g to 70g of protein a day is a more common number used by many doctors. How many shakes you drink per day depends on the protein content of whatever else you eat. In other words if your protein requirement is 60g per day, you might drink one 35g shake and the rest of your protein would come from other food that you eat. I'll be 32 weeks post-op on Thursday and I have one shake a day, usually for breakfast. The rest comes from other foods and I have averaged 95g of protein per day since Jan 1st. I haven't found any protein shakes that I would consider "cheap" but Pure Protein is cheaper than Myoplex and still quite tasty. Pure Protein is also almost half the calories of Myoplex. There are many other options out there but I'm not sure what the cost comparison would be. Hope that helps!

    Going Back To Work

Of all of the questions that you'll see on the forum, this one may be the most personal decision everyone has to make for themselves. People are going to notice your weight loss. And some are going to be openly curious about your success. Others will be curious, but no so open. Some may be openly critical about your decision. Others will be critical, but not so open. Personally, I am a decidedly private person but given the realities, I opted to just tell anyone who asked. Anyone who thinks "diet and exercise" is a viable solution to a worldwide obesity problem of epidemic proportions is at best ignorant of the disease, and at worst, a fool. I found that ALL of my friends and by far the vast majority of everyone else was incredibly kind and supportive. And as noted above, many asked and continue to be very interested in how I made the decision, how tough has it been and would I do it again - they are interested either for themselves, for loved ones, for friends or even just curiosity. I enjoy sharing my experience and many have expressed their admiration for my willingness to talk about it openly. If you're honest and open about it, it very quickly becomes yesterday's news and everyone just moves on with life. If you try to keep it a secret, I think that just adds fuel to the rumor mill and that can linger for a long time.

    Diet Soda

I haven't tried any but my surgeon said no carbonated drinks, diet or otherwise. Period. No exceptions. The carbonation stretches the pouch. There are a lot of non-carbonated alternatives though - Crystal light, decaf coffee or tea, etc.

    Eating Right?

Good afternoon guys! For those of you who were interested in my list of protein foods - I prepared a simple Excel spreadsheet with 51 foods along with calories, serving size and protein per serving. Unfortunately, when I tried to post it, all of the formatting was lost and it would have been a nightmare to make much sense out of it. I also tried to attach the file to the post but got an error message indicating that I'm not allowed to attach that type of file. If anyone has any ideas on how I can add this to the forum I'd be grateful for any advice. As an alternative for anyone interested, if you're comfortable with sending me your email address in a PM, I'd be glad to email you the file. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Sorry - I tried.

    Drinking

Hey John! There's a learning curve with your pouch. I think pain is the pouch telling you to slow down a little - especially since you're only 4 days post-op. The trick is trying to get all the fluids you need - usually 64oz a day is recommended. That can be especially challenging early on since you're probably not hungry. Keep in mind that 64oz doesn't have to be all water. Protein drinks, broth and any other liquids count toward that goal. So everyone is a little different and you'll probably want to experiment and find what works best for you in terms of getting the fluids you need - while avoiding any pain.

    Eating Right?

Made the Costco and grocery store runs yesterday. Freezer is looking much better with some good eats in it! LOL. Working on the list guys but the weekend is a little busy with the holiday. Got to spend some quality time with my grandson! I'll try to get it up on Tuesday at the latest. I'll start a new topic so that other folks can add to it as well. You guys have a great Memorial Day!!

    Eating Right?

Beth, I'm an iPhone guy so I don't know a lot about android. "My Fitness Pal" is recommended by a lot of doctors/staff and I've never read a bad review. I "think" that there are versions for both iPhone and android but I'm not certain. I use "Tap and Track" on my iPhone but there may be an android version as well. I know iPhone has a ton of other apps that do much the same thing. I started using Tap and Track because it had the highest reviews and I it does everything I need it to do. Some kind of logging, whether it's an app or just manually is a very powerful tool. I strongly recommend it!

    Eating Right?

I'm on it Vamp. May take me a couple of days. We have a freezer in our garage that was loaded to the brim with food. Recently had some work done on our house and one of the worker dudes unplugged the freezer to plug in a tool. We were out of town for a few days and didn't discover what had happened until almost a week later. We lost all of it - had to be close to $1000 worth. So...Costco and grocery store trips planned for tomorrow to start building things up again. I'll be able to be more specific after we stock up. Have a great Memorial Day!!
