  1. When I attended a support group the surgeon described lap band as just sticking your toe in the Water where as gastric bypass has less of a chance of regaining weight - I am leaning towards gastric bypass my BMI is 39.5 weight 235 like to lose 100 pounds -- looking forward to meeting with the surgeon on 10/5/12 for my consultation. Any thoughts?

Your surgeon is correct. I previously had the lap band, it failed me & I regained nearly all the weight. This past July, I had a revision done to remove the band and get the gastric bypass, in two months, I've lost 84 lbs and I feel absolutely great! Not to say I didn't have a few complications, which worked themselves out, but I'm very happy I had it done because I feel confident I won't gain it back ^_^

Good luck to you & everyone embarking on this journey! ^_^

  3. I've seen anything from 1 week to 6 weeks from posts on other boards. Does anyone know an average (if all goes well of course). Just trying to plan for when I get approval and a date.

My surgery date was July 12, 2012, I had planned a week but encountered several complications including a bowel obstruction. My road to recovery has been a long & arduous one but I am finally at the point where I am at 90% & hope to return to work next week, providing my dr gives his ok today at my follow up appt.

I'm glad I was able to take the needed time off to properly recuperate (2 1/2 months), my body needed it ^_^

  4. I am 3 1/2 Months post op RNY and have lost 85 pounds. However' date=' I have numbness and tingling in my legs (new), kind of a restless feeling too. Anyone else?

Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk[/quote']

I do as well, I'm about 6 weeks post op and right out of surgery I had numbness in my right hand and leg, which has moved to include tingling as well. I noticed that as I moved thru recovery, the swelling & Water subsided from these areas, but now that the swelling is all but gone, it's become very painful.

I bought an ace bandage for my foot, ankle & lower leg, I have it on now and it feels WONDERFUL & has caused the tingling to subside substantially...

  5. My surgery is scheduled for the 8th of October. My doctor recommended I take off for 2 weeks and I understand why....Only thing is im thinking about my finances. I don't get paid time off and don't want to put us in the hole....How long did you wait before you went back to work?

My surgery date was July 11, 2012. I encountered some complications which put me in ICU for almost 2 weeks, in addition to having to have a 2nd surgery to clear a bowel obstruction. I've been home 3 weeks & am self ambulatory for the most part.

I'm off wk till at minimum mid to late September because of all that I went through surgically (this Peru dr). I'm on short term disability technically for 3 months, but my dr says I'll be able to return before then.

CANT GO BACK TO SO BECAUSE OF MY ANXIETY

HAVE DEPRESSION' date=' GERD , HYPERTENSION, DIABETES AND MAY HAVE PcOS AND GALLSTONES

FEEL LIKE I WONT BE ABLE TO GET GASTRIC BYPASS SOON ENOUGH

WITH MEDICAID I MAY HAVE TO TAKE ANOTHER 6 MONTHS TO GET APPROVED

I FEEL LIKE I MAY LOSE MY MIND[/quote']

Also, for me to get approved for this 2nd surgery, it took about 5 months with all of the requirements such as the psyche eval, sleep study, cleaeance from. A heart specialist, nutrition eval, etc., it takes 'time'... I found other activities to take myind off of the anticipated 5 months to get approved and focused on one appr at a time *smiles*

    YOU can do it!

    Hi Lindsey,

Please don't ever feel like you're going thru this alone. This forum is full of 'Lindsey's' & 'Vikki's', & we are here to uplift you on your journey to a better you.

Time seems to go at a snails pace when one is going thru the bariatric approval process, and I can attest, it does. On July 12, 2012, I had the gastric bypass (roux en y), & is my 2nd bariatric surgery after a failed lap band some 5 years earlier which caused me in recent yeara to regain all of my weight, have high cholesterol, blood pressure, & sleep apnea.

You see, I didn't opt for the gastric bypass at all. On July 12, 2011, the intent of my dr & I was to remove the failed lap band & give me the gastric sleeve. However, due to years of scar tissue that I have the sleeve didnt take & my dr has no

choice but to give me the bypass. I encountered complications, was in ICU for 11 days, & had to have a 2nd surgery to clear a bowl obstruction.

I am now 1 month an some days post op, & am at home doing very well. I still have a feeding tube in my tummy because my dr wants to assure my new tummy is strong before I'm able to take my first bite of soft-solid foods. I sip PLENTY of Water, & sugar free drinks, chicken broth, etc... But my favorite are the blue bell

    sugar free popcicles :-).

My surgery was an experience, & one that I've come to acknowledge that God 'intended' for me to go thru & share my experience with others so

that people will know hope is NOT lost.

I say all of this because I hear the despair in your voice & I'm here to tell you that you have support in this forum. If I can offer anything , i would say tackle it 'one day at a time' & focus on small goals to help you to get to your goal of a healthier lifestyle with having bariatric surgery.

    God bless you Lindsey,

  8. I had complications with my procedure on July 12th, was released from the hospital on July 25th (spent 11 days in ICU). Basically, my surgeon took out the lap band, attempted to give me the sleeve (which we both agreed was best for me), HOWEVER, because of severe scar tissue from 2 c sections, prior abdominal procedures, the sleeve did not take, & my dr converted me to a gastric bypass (roux n y). in addition, I encountered a bowel obstruction which had to be surgically fixed immediately, & am now home on the mend, & with a feeding tube directly to my new tummy(to give it time to heal, it will be removed next week by my dr).

Although I did not expect any of this, & it was a HARD road traveled, it is what was laid before me and GOD brought me thru it....comfortably on the mend...
