    Healthfirst

I started everything in June- first appointment was June 18th and I had surgery November 14th so 5 months. It would have been 4 months but I was delayed one month for pulmonary. I complained about the process as I was doing it but all in all it went fast. I've been doing great! Down almost 60lbs (lost 20 pre op). The first few days were rough but by week 2 I felt great. I haven't had this much energy in a LONG time. Eating hasn't been as hard as i thought. Haven't has trouble with any foods I've eaten just have to learn to eat slower or its a bit uncomfortable. Aside from that i feel totally normal. I don't regret a thing about the decision.

    Healthfirst

I'm from The Bronx also with Health First. I had surgery Nov 14th and went through Jacobi Hospital in The Bronx. I honestly didn't think surgery would happen at one point because the nurse practitioner told me health first is very difficult to approve. I didn't do a 6 month diet it either because no one informed me I needed one until very late in the process. So we submitted o insurance with just a letter for approval written by my surgeons office. I also did all the other standard pre op testing. We heard back in less then 24 hours that I was approved. SHOCKED me because they hyped it up to believe they were so difficult and I was so nervous. Honestly even the insurance coordinator was surprised they approved me so I don't know if my situation was a rare exception. If I were you I would do the 6 month diet anyway just to be safe. Best of luck!

    Stalls

I had surgery the same day as you and I've had a few stalls. One lasted several weeks and I even gained 2lbs right after Christmas. Stalls are just part of this whole thing. You're doing great! Don't have any expert advice but just sending hugs to a fellow Nov 14th sleever

    eggs

Well you could probably fry one in a skillet with a tiny spray of Pam, but it's a much better idea to go with poached scrambled or hard boiled.

    Good carbs

Great stuff here guys thank you for the replies!! When you come on here and read low carb all the time it's easy to forget that there are good carbs. Cheri excellent post! I also look at VSG as a lifestyle and I don't feel like that included depriving myself. It doesn't mean I can feel free to eat crap either. For me a balanced diet has always been the goal. Clean eating is so appealing to me now also. It's amazing how much my outlook on food and eating has changed. Fresh veggies, roasted potatoes things like that are so appealing to me these days where as pre op I LIKED them but didn't crave them. I'm very excited to try some recipes with quinoa. I was introduced to it by my ex a few years ago who was all about health food at the time and I kind of just turned my nose up at it. I had it again before surgery a few months ago and really enjoyed it. There are tons of great recipes on Pinterest for it btw! Thank you for the input everyone! I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling like carbs have gotten a bad rep. Not all carbs are bad

    Good carbs

So I know the word carbs is kind of a bad word around here lol but I'm interested to see what people's opinions are on good carbs like sweet potatoes, whole grain bread and starches like quinoa. I'm still early out and have been keeping it very low carb and I'm fine with that. I don't miss carbs for the most part, but down the line it would be nice to add some of these into my diet (with protein of course ring king) thoughts? How do you all feel about the so called 'good carbs'? I feel especially when I'm eventually able to step up my exercise good carbs may be helpful for energy.

    Can you lose too fast?

I lost 20 pound week 1 (I also had a heigh weigh 359) after the first week though it evened out and I hit a plateau for a few weeks, so don't be surprised if you stall for a little while after such a big loss. Generally when you start out with more to lose you drop the weight faster then say someone who started out at 220lbs. Don't worry it will even out, you won't be losing 20lbs every week lol

    Weight loss pounds check in

    Christmas Day Challenge!

Well I did actually make my revised goal weight before Christmas but the day before Christmas I had food that was very high in sodium and I retained two pounds of Water so I actually GAINED weight in Christmas! I was 323 right before then 325 after!! I was so angry because 323 was my goal. But good news I weighed today and its all gone and I'm down another pound 322! Ill take it HW 379 SW 359 Christmas goal 323 Made goal before Christmas of 323 Gained 2lbs water weight and now 322 so I feel successful even with a minor glitch

    Who I am...who am I

You're still very early out so don't be so concerned with the scale quite yet. Our bodies fluctuate right after surgery. Most people gain weight then drop then hit a plateau. I lost a lot my first week post op (20lbs) then nothing for a several weeks. Don't fret you're body needs time to catch up to what's going on. I think it's awesome your doing this with your husband! Sending you both lots of luck!
  12. Happens to me too. I eat too fast most of the time. Unfortunately turkey meat does this to me every time no matter how slow I eat or how small of a bite. Certain foods will do it more then others especially drier foods.

Let's Check In November 2012 Sleevers!

I stalled for a while too. I was at the same weight for several weeks and it drove me MAD. Then all of a sudden BAM dropped 7lbs in a week! Right now I think I'm in another stall but I'm okay with it. I gained two pounds (THAT freaked me out) but I know it was mostly water weight caused by eating take out one night which was full of sodium (chicken and chinese veggies, but man chinese food always makes me bloat!) I'm not going to weigh for a while- hopefully I can last until after the New Year- because I'll drive myself crazy. I've lost 56lbs (well 53 minus the water ugh) and I feel great- not gonna let body fluctuation weight piss me off! Hope all my fellow November sleevers are doing great!

    Typical rate of weight loss

Oh but if you mean over all weight loss they say VSGers lose 60-65 percent of their excess body weight (I think? I've seen people quote up to 70 percent but unsure on that) Of course that is also subjective because people can lose WAY more or WAY less. Its up to the person

    Typical rate of weight loss

I think you kind of answered your own question because it does vary so widley lol. It is true us VSGers don't (typically) lose weight as fast as RNY patients though. I lost 30lbs my first month. I was very happy with that. I've seen people who lose close to 40, and seen others who lose 15. Its tough to answer this question when its such a subjective thing

    so many post op questions

Thank goodness she's home now! That does NOT sound like the place where she needs to be recovering!! As long as she's not throwing up everything I think she'll be okay. Some people just have a lot more pain then others. I didn't have a drain so I can't comment on that. See how she feels after she has the drain taken out.

    375 Lbs Pre - Op

Surgery was November 14th. 299 is so close I can taste it LOL! I'm also loving my life these days! My energy level is UP UP UP and I find myself so much more active then I've been in a LOOONG time! I love it!

    so many post op questions

Every surgical team is different, but most from what I've heard and read don't push the protein until at least week two. I mean don't get me wrong it is absolutly important to get 60+ grams of protein in a day but usually there is a little leway in not pushing it first thing. I would honestly just make sure she is getting in liquids and not have her force the protein yet.

    so many post op questions

First off you are more then welcome here. This is a big lift change for everyone and its great you are looking for answers for her. She is lucky to have someone so caring. I am so sorry she's going through all this pain. I had quite a bit of pain after my surgery (I read about all sorts of people who had zero pain post op so I was kind of horrified by how much it hurt) when I came home the first few days were a struggle. If she is honestly in that much pain though I would reccomend going to an ER. 6 days is a long time to be in severe pain. By day 6 things had gotten to a tolerable level for me. I don't want to scare you, but when in doubt go to the ER. You said she has been vomiting has she been able to keep down anything at all? That worries me. That early out though the focus shouldn't be on getting Protein in but fluids. Protein is important yet, but fluids are number one. Keep her hydrated. Soup, even soup lacking protein is okay at that point. I was eating mostly cream based Soups at that point per my drs orders (was on full liquids) but honestly I worry about her pain level. If things do not improve please don't hesitate to take a trip the ER. I'm sending good thoughts to you and her!
