  1. I am curious about the first stages of weightloss. Do you think most of the weight that comes off in the beginning is because the liquid diet or the actual surgery?

I believe the massive weight loss early on is from malnutrition. The body is burning both fat & muscle because it's not enough carbs or protien to sustain either. Then the all to common 3-4week stall is when the body starts replacing the muscle it burned in he early stages(this is my belief). I believe he stall isn't that the body has quit losing fat but that is replacing lost muscle tissue at te same rate or even faster. Then once all the muscle tissue has been repaired the apperance of weight loss resumes.

  2. No, you did nothing wrong. The powder in the shake is so much heavier than soy milk there is no way that the soy milk could be the culprit. Your stomach is still irritated & swollen. 8oz is actually a lot this early on. I actually mix 1serving of protien mix with 4oz soy milk. If I feel like a treat I throw a cup of ice in it and put it in the blender.

BTW protien shakes are not a clear liquid.

  3. USD is the preferred currency. Most vendors will actually give you better than standard exchange rate. And yes, do carry small denominations. Also, rememember, if you are in one of the souvenir type shops the price you are initially given is typically 3-4times what they will actually sell it for. Bickering over price is expected, heck, it's pretty much customary. I typically give in at about 1/2 of their original price, this way they still have plenty of profit & I don't look like an easy target.

  4. Apparently' date=' that muscle will always be prone to strain and pain because damage is done to it during the removal of the stomach..[/quote']

That would be totally new to me. I was into heavy weight lifting when I was younger. We intentionally shredded our muscles because they repaired themselves stronger & bigger. I've never heard of muscle damage that wasn't repairable back to 100%. Ligament & tendons yes , but not muscle.

  5. Keep in mind your body at some point is going to be confused because all of a sudden' date=' you are dropping weight and it's not used to that. It's going to try and cling to it but it will let go soon enough. It's probably due to the shock to the system - you'll be losing like crazy soon enough, no doubt :)[/quote']

Keep eating in regular intervals. This will help your body to keep from going into storage mode. When you go for long stretches without nourishment you're body identifies that as starvation and will try to retain what it has. Conversely if you are eating a little something every 2-3 hrs your bode feels it can rely on a steady supply & is more willing to release its stores.

  6. Glad to hear everyone is okay! I'm a bit panicked - I get sleeved 6/14. So you all are able to swallow pills? I have two meds I have to take and that's one of the things I'm apprehensive about - swallowing a pill on post-op day 2.

I can't say anything about day 2, but I've been taking small pills since day 4. I think it will really be dependent on he size of the pill. If they are RX pills many of them can be compounded into chewable or crushable by any compounding pharmacy.

  7. I think you've made a very wise decision. I too considered the lap-band & had saved up for it for over a year. While I was saving I started to notice a lot of people talking about revisions, and when the surgeons started offering "band to sleeve" standard pricing, that told me this was happening WAY to much. Then I read somewhere that the lap band has a 60% success rate...... What? O.o that means that 40% of then either fail or don't provide adequate weight loss.

I had my sleeve done 15 days ago & I can say I absolutely believe I made the right decision & so are you.

  8. Holy cow, Really? I mean Really? So your friends & family decide to pay you a compliment (keep in mind these are the same people that you probably complain about your weight problems to) & instead of taking it at face value you have to twist it to have some underlying backhanded intent. Really? Sounds more to me like somebody has self esteem issues.

If you tell someone that you are considering/having WLS, and they say "you're not that big" why not respond with something like "It's so nice to have people in my life that accept me the way I am." then maybe mention a few of the things that your weight has caused or maybe what loosing the weight will mean you can do.

Thinner people that have never been big don't understand the damage even 100lbs can cause, and admit it, us big folk don't want to be left behind. But I can say when I've told anybody that I have sleep apnea(which shortens your life), borderline high blood pressure, damage to my right knee, my back hurts after only walking about 100 yards, and my achilies tendons can cause me to be down for days at a time. And all of this can be cured or minimized by losing 150lbs+- all of the sudden they become very supportive. Knowledge creates understanding.

  9. My personal take on this is...... I'll simply eat the real stuff a lot less often, in a lot smaller quantity, then put in some extra excersise to burn it off. Moderation is the key
