    Is it right for me!!!

Hi Jet I'll leave most of your questions to others and/or the doc at your consultation tomorrow. These are all questions we've all had and you're perfectly normal in wondering about these things. I would like to encourage you to let the surgeon know that you've been diagnosed "non purging bullemic" at the first consultation. It probably won't be a big issue for him, since you don't purge, but it's something you'd want him to know up front, just in case he would require a psych work up or follow up psych care. It would be a bummer for you to get all set up for the surgery, and find out, after the doc reads your medical records that he'd want more follow up on your condition. Best wishes! Let us know how your consultation goes.
  2. Hi Marcy. Yep, I struggled for years over this. Up to five years ago, I felt WLS was for the weak willed and that I was just weak and needed more will power to lose weight. Then, after having my 4th child and getting up to 280 pounds, and watching some others have gastric bypass and succesfully losing weight, I started to think...hmmm, perhaps sugery isn't such a bad option. I still couldn't wrap my mind around the "rewiring" of my digestive system with GB. Then a couple of years ago, I saw a commercial about the lapband system. I tucked it in the back of my head and gave medifast a try. I was a hard core medifaster...starting at 285 pounds and got down to 233 in only 4 months!!! I was feeling on top of the world! Then, we all know the story, the call to binge got stronger and stronger until I gave in and in less than a year, but all my weight back on, minus 1 pound. So, my husband and I both began discussing lapband...we both went for consultations (seperately), we both decided to go for it. So, for many of us, this is a long process of research, thought, prayer and work. So, like others have told you, you'll know when it's the right time for you. Best wishes in what ever you decide

Lucy: I totally agree...I LOVE this site...it's SO much better than a support group full of GBer's!!! How ya doing today? Ja9va: I have four daughters, 18, 16 (on 6/12), 7 & 5. The two older ones are extremely supportive! The two younger ones don't even know I'm having surgery. I didn't want them to worry. They hear the word "hospital" and freak! Pretty much everyone I've told has been wonderfully supportive. My mom is doing her best to be supportive, but she's anti-weight loss surgery. But she hasn't been negative and has been trying to keep upbeat about it. If my dad knows he hasn't said anything about it. I'm sure my mom told him, but he's a wise man that figures his grown, married, mother of 4 daughter, has her own life and can make her own decisions. It's a shame some people are so negative about WLS, but I don't let that bother me...I'm going to get healthy and fit...that outweighs any negativity! Congrats on getting married!!!!! July 7th is FAST approaching!!!! Good luck Accountability: still not 100% compliant on medifast, but dropped another pound, for 7 total, so I must be doing OK! Need to get in some exercise...maybe I'll take Amy to the YMCA today Have a great day guys!!!

    Am I Alone Here

Just popped in to say hi! I was born and raised in New Castle County... moved to Wisconsin in Oct 2005 ...still miss my family and friends in DE, but honestly, our insurance there wouldn't have covered the lapband, so I'm kinda glad for hubby's new job out here and I can't say as I miss the traffic either Well, happy banding DE!!!

    abortion

I have to agree....this has been the BEST debate over the topic I've EVER seen in my life. No one's gotten mean or made personal attacks!! Aren't we all a bunch of mature folks! lol!!
  6. I'm sorry the wait is so long It must be really frustrating.
  7. I'm so happy hubby and I are both being banded...we can share a meal and no one has to be the wiser...heck at some places we'll STILL have left overs!!! I have seen the card. A guy at my support group had one...I think each doc words it differently...his just mentioned the WLS and asked for the courtesy to order from the kids menu. I'm with the others tho...kids menu food is poor quality, high calorie stuff we shouldn't be eating anyway.

    abortion

I'm sure most men would LOVE this logic...especially if she keeps the baby...cuz after all, his participation ends at the orgasm, so he doesn't need to support the baby. Can't cut it both ways...if he's going to be responsible to support a child, he should have SOME right to AT LEAST discuss the decision with the mother.

That's not necessarily true...if you agree with the pro-choice side, they'd love to hear from you! LOL sorry, just couldn't resist! I'm totally kidding, so please don't jump all over me.
  10. Hi Natz, welcome Are you in the UK? I'm asking because I was wondering, if you are in the UK, is lapband covered under National Health? My husband is a british citizen and is having a heck of a time getting insurance to cover him because he's "too heavy" for lapband according to them. I had been giving thought to him going back to London to have it done, but if there's a 3+ year wait, that's no good either. On another note...if it's not covered by NH, perhaps you could look into Mexico...It's about $10,000 or 5000 pounds. Just some food for thought. I hope you get in very soon!

Ah, Mark I don't wanna ruin your fun. I'm just saying that we won't change each other's opinions. You can banter away hehe :scales:

    abortion

Just try to remember that this "imposed morality" wasn't even a consideration until the 1960's. Yes, there were a few back alley abortions prior to that time and some women died. But far MORE women have died since making it legal, because we're aborting babies at mind boggling rates. Before the 60's it wasn't an issue, you got pregnant, you had a baby. So, to say that in 50 years I'm pushing a moral issue, when we've had 200 years of no abortion is a bit of a stretch to me. If you feel I'm weaving a tangled web, well that's OK. I'm solid in my beliefs and again, like I said, I don't expect to change anyone's opinion on the subject, was simply answering the original question. You won't change my opinion, I won't change yours. So bantering back and forth will not be productive for either of us

    Postop recovery and swimming

I asked about this, because I LOVE to swim...I have to ask again, because I'm not sure if he said 6 or 8 weeks! I know the incisions have to be healed before immersing in water. Hopefully we can get a more difinitive answer.

    Public Smoking Bans

LOL!!!! I don't know how anyone can AFFORD to drive a hummer, unless you're filthy rich!!!! I know the gas mileage is like 12mpg or close to it and they're dreadfully uncomfortable!!!! I just don't get the hummer appeal, but someone must see it, cuz I see them all over the place.

    abortion

I didn't take it as a personal attack. Those are ligitimate questions and I wish I could answer them all. I can only speak for my own personal convictions and am glad I don't have the responsibility of making descisions for others. I never said that life begins after the zygote attaches. I feel that conception is once the zygote attaches. It's not a conceived pregnancy if it never attaches to the uterine wall. There can be no viability if it doesn't attach to the uterine wall. If that were the case then all tubal pregnancies are abortions. I don't believe that and I sure hope no one see's ending a tubal pregnancy as abortion, because to me, that would be ludicrous. That's how I draw my personal conclusion on the morning after pill. Would I support a law that would remove a woman's choice to have an abortion, other than to save the mother's life? Yes, I probably would. I know that answering this question will probably open me up to public ridicule and scarastic attacks, but it's an honest answer and I don't expect to change anyone's opion on the matter. I was just answering the original question on where I stand on the abortion issue. However, I don't judge women that make this choice, because it's not my place to put judgement on them.
  16. Same here...no one told me to expect gas pain and walk as much as possible when I had my tubal! I'm so glad I was told this time how to reduce, if not eliminate, the gas pain.

    abortion

Well, I'm in the minority on this particular thread. I am pro-life. I believe in the sanctity of life from the moment of conception. Now, with that said, I personally don't believe that conception actually happens until the zygote implants firmly to the uterine wall. So, I personally have no problem with the morning after pill. I know a lot of militant pro-lifers really fought the morning after pill...I saw it as a good option to actual abortion. I DO feel it needs to be closely monitored and not made available over the counter. I feel a doctor should see the patient a few days after, just to make sure she's OK...because some girls have had complications with it. I have four daughters and if one of them came to me and told me they had unprotected sex, or was raped, I would call the doc that second, get her examined and get her the morning after pill! NOW, if my daughter does not share my belief and feels it would be morally wrong to take that pill, I wouldn't force her to take it, but for me, it's not a viable pregnancy if the zygote never attaches. Heck, we pass zygotes out many times in our lives as women and don't ever even know it! As for people that bomb abortion clinics...well, I can not for the life of me understand their reasoning...how can you justify fighting for life by TAKING life?? It doesn't make sense to me! So, anywhoo...that's where I stand on the matter.

    June 2007 Bandsters

Good morning Junie's!!! OK...I feel like I'm monopolizing this thread! Accountability: didn't stay 100% compliant, but pretty darn close. Had to go to my husbands department bbq!!! Let me tell you, if you've ever seen "The Biggest Loser", I felt like one of those people that had to face a mountain of the most scrumptios food!!!! There was not ONE vegetable in sight!!!!!! SO, I had a plate of fruit (watermelon, grapes, pineapple, and strawberries) and two 3oz extra lean hamburgers, each had 1/2 slice of cheese :phanvan So, all in all I could have done worse, but truth be told, I should have only had one burger w/o the cheese. AND fruit is not part of the medifast plan, but I figured it's better than eating the cheese cake!!! So all in all, not too bad. Still 6 pounds down. Hope to see a drop tomorrow. I know...I'm a scale 'ho! How's everyone else doing?

    June 2007 Bandsters

I TOTALLY relate Lucy!!!! I was required to go to a support group meeting too...and there was only ONE person that had the lapband and she was only 4 weeks out and was STARVING...the rest were GB and one was rude enough to ask me "Why the heck would you want the band when GB guarantees faster weight loss?" I just smiled politely, but I SO wanted to say "Because I don't want my insides rearranged and I don't want to lose my hair LIKE YOU!!" Usually I would speak up, but just bit my tongue and muttled through knowing I'd never have to go again!

Hi Janie. Well, I was went on medifast for my medically supervised diet. I had to do that for the insurance approval. I did great and lost 28 pounds in 11 weeks. I didn't stay 100% compliant, because I could only lose 32 pounds and still qualify for Insurance approval. Once they submitted for insurance approval in late March, I stopped watching my diet and found over this past weekend that I had gained back 10 pounds!!!! YIKES!!! My pre-op physical is next week, so I went back on medifast to take off those 10 pounds. I've lost 6 of them so far... must have been retaining A LOT of water! My doc does require a full liquid diet for one week prior to surgery...then two weeks post op full liquids, then two weeks puree'd then two weeks soft foods. The pre op liquid diet is to shrink the liver and allow the surgeon to maneuver better in the gut.

What are you getting your Mom for Mother's Day?

my mom lives 1100 miles from me, so I sent her flowers.
  22. Well, I doubt the insurance company would consider the pregnancy related issues as co-morbidities...the High Blood pressure is a definite co-m. Also, if you're pre-diabetic that's also a co-m. And don't worry, if you're denied the first time, there's always appeals. Right now the LapBand company is going to bat with our insurance company who denied my husband because his BMI is 60. They stipulate that they'll only cover for BMI's of 40-50 (35-40 with co-m's). Well of course there is nothing to substantiate that pre-determination and therefore LapBand is appealing for him. He's a little discouraged, but we're certain we'll prevail. I'm sure you'll prevail too! Probably on the first try. It's scary at first...there is a lot of confustion at the beginning and if you're anything like me, you want everything laid out in a straight line with specific instructions. Unfortunately, this isn't a "one size fits all" process. So, go for it! I think you'll be fine and banded before you know it

  24. Since finding out that my file was being submitted to insurace for approval, I haven't been watching my diet at all! As a matter of fact, I've even gone on some pretty mean binge and have gained back 8 pounds...in ONE month!!! Today, I'm trying to get my head back in the right place. I don't want to have the "last supper" mentality. I'm finding it so difficult! I could use some constructive advice.
