Love running and it does get easier if you stop challenging yourself. I was sleeved 3.12 and since then I've completed lots of half marathons, and 7 full marathons. I'm currently training for a 50 miler. I was never a runner. I tried several times prior to sleeve surgery and I'd always end up with injuries. After losing lots of weight, my body no longer comes up lame. Lol. Give it a fair shot. You have to get past the sucky part. You'll get there in time. If you still don't like it- don't do it. There's too many neat ways to get your cardio in!

Loving the race calendar!! I get so excited about building mine for the past two years! I've done 7 fulls. They get easier the more you do them. I went a little crazy and completed six this year. Mountains to beach is on wish list as well. I noticed you have spooners cove. Brazen race, right? I love brazen races. In fact I'm running the NYE half on the 27th!

What a great thread and so motivational since I just started a running program last week. I ran in the past and my profile picture is after finishing my fastest 5K. It motivates me to get back into shape.
When I first started, I signed up for a 5K with a friend and I cursed myself for that decision every day as I ran and hated it. I remember the day before the run, I said once I got through it, I would never run again. Well, something happens when you cross that finish line. I can't describe it, maybe I was just thankful that I didn't have a heart attack. Whatever it was, I wanted more! The next year, I ran a half marathon. As my weight went back up, I wasn't able to run anymore and it was one of my motivations to have surgery. It's amazing that I went from hating it to loving it. I have always joked that running is only fun when you're good at it. It really sucks when you first start. But once you're able to run without feeling like dying, it's amazing.
BTW, my bucket list item is to run my first full marathon next December in Honolulu.

I signed up for my first Olympic Triathlon; the Kemah Triathlon on April of 2015. I've been wanting to do one for a long time but never had the guts to sign up for one. I'm super excited and VERY nervous especially for the open Water swim which I've already started training for. I'm also going to talk about my training on my blog: www.julissaschultz.com.
If any of ya'll out there have completed an OLY tri please message me. I would like to know what your nutrition was like during the race and would also like to hear about your experience.
    Thanks!

You're welcome. My orthopedic surgeon has been shocked at how well my knee is doing. I told him my Chi Running secret and he's been suggesting it to all his patients that run. My knee doesn't feel any different after running 7 miles today than it would if I had walked 7 miles.

I used an app on my phone called Simple C25K. I liked it because it had a tone/beep that you can hear over your music that tells you when to change from walking to running and so on.

When I used to do yoga they had a saying: You bring a different body every day.
Sometimes it is easy and sometimes it isn't, just depends on which body you brought that day. I thought of this when I read about how sometimes it is easy to run and sometimes it isn't
I love how popular this thread is!!! It motivated me to get back out there yesterday and try running again. It has been about a month since I ran and I did about the same as when I left off so I was happy with that.
For anyone doing the C25K or anything like that, how do you keep track of your time if you run for 1 minute, etc.? Or if you run for 500 yards--how do you know when you have run that far?

I want to be a runner - it would be more convenient, more trails to pick from, seems like so many fun 5k events... but rollerblading was as much as my knees would ever tolerate over 200 lbs, and I've got a long way to go to get to sub 200. Then I will try this C25k thing.

Congrats! I'm 20 mo out right now & struggling. BUT something you said just resonated very deeply in me... I never knew the stretch receptors were at the bottom!! That *absolutely* makes the "Protein 1st" part make sense! I need to get back to that.
Thank you so very much for sharing.

Well, I am becoming a weather wimp. Also, I am dating someone now who is going through some physical issues so instead of hiking or some other active sport, we tend to cook dinners and share wine...hmmm... could that be why "dating" is fattening? HA!
Anyway, yesterday i stopped by a new month to month gym that i am going to do for a few months to get my Buns moving more... and to take away the "it's cold out" excuse.
These are from this summer and i want deltoids like that again!

I am 3 years out and maintaining a major weight loss (I went from 308, got as low as 140 and am hanging out in the mid 150s right now).
Anyway, I have been having more trouble with hunger, cravings etc and I think it has alot to do with my boys living at home again so I have food in the house that calls my name (bread, potatoes, sometimes junk food) again. Also, I am steady dating someone and for reasons i cannot grasp, that seems to be fattening - well, I am not going out dancing and stuff as much as I used to. Final issue is that I am suffering some physical issues that have interferred with my working out so i thought it would be good to get a tune up with a good NUT.
I think we talked through a couple of areas of improvement - you guessed it going back to basics! I have gotten out of the habit of focusing on hydration for example. They are now saying 64-100 oz of Fluid consumed at least 30 minutes post meal.
She said i eat more quantity than she thinks a typical sleever should be able to eat. I don't measure, but I eat from a small side plate so i am not sure about that, but it is true i can eat a good sized salad etc.
Anyway, the thing I learned that i thought was very interesting is she had a model of the sleeve tummy which is shaped like a banana. the "stretch" receptors are at the bottom and the top of the sleeve. So, I always eat Protein first, but I don't always LITERALLY eat protein first. Example, a salad with salmon on it - i have the salmon chopped up into the salad. She has suggested that I eat at least half the salmon first, before any lettuce because that "dense protein" will hit that receptor much firmer and I will feel more satiated. So, LITERALLY eat protein first and then eat the veggies, greens etc. I think I used to do that quite carefully, but i eat a lot of mixed foods now (salad with meat in it, egg dish with veggies and low fat turkey sausage mixed in it etc). I will try this.
She also really recommends the mini meals every 3 hours - so 5 mini meals. She said that if you get overly hungry, you can often eat and then maybe 1-2 hours later you are hungry again (and repeat) - referred to it as the boomerang effect. I am not sure about this one, during the weight loss phase I ate 4 mini meals. I have done 5:2 and found that the fasting can reduce appetite (as well as other health benefits of fasting). I am skeptical on this one.
Since I am struggling a bit through the holidays, and no way am I successful at 5:2 right now, I am going to try following her advice.
So, 3 years out as of Dec 11 - and so very pleased with my results and life with a sleeve!

I can relate to aftershocks! I think every time I try I move a fault line that much closer to a big quake! LMBO
Mi madre and hubby were/are runners and tell me it is hard work but it gets easier if you are consistent.
I am hoping to get into a running groove when I get about 30 more lbs lighter. By then I'll be 40 lbs away from goal.
There's alot of good running programs out there for download with fitness apps.
One thing, just make sure you are wearing the correct size and type if running shoe. Shoes can make a huge difference between a good, safe run & injury!

I'm going to setup a message thread to see how much interest there would be in a Bariatric Pal Ragnar team. I think Vegas would probably be the best bet because tickets are cheap to there from everywhere. It's also in November so if you're just starting out you could train in that amount of time. Or if we could get a group together quickly, I would LOVE to do Zion Trail in April.

Napa was amazing!!! Lots of hills so quite a challenge plus the whole navigating and no sleep thing LOL, but I LOVED McDowell mountain, the trails are sooooo much more fun for me and more chill! Tahoe is top of my list for this year now that they've announced it! I need to work out a small overlap with something that has me in Utah until the morning of the race currently but if I can I am SO THERE!
