    Tired and Week

Thanks everybody, I will just be patient and hang in there. Today I started pureed food and it seemed heavenly. A real scrambled egg! Cottage cheese! Tuna (And I don't even like tuna!)

    what are sliders?

I think that anything that would just slide down without having to chew, jello, pudding, cream soup etc. I have to admit my brain went instantly to those wonderful little mini burgers though.
  3. I was on over 200 units of insulin a day. I saw my PCP yesterday, 12 days post-op. He took my off insulin completely! I had stopped Metformin just before the surgery and he said it can go too! Just taking Onglyza and Glimipiride for this month and he said they will probably go at my next visit next month. That alone has made the surgery worth it.

    Day of surgery

My surgery was originally scheduled for noon but an emergency came up and it was postponed until 6pm. Since I still had my tummy I was starving and so thirsty. They had me in the pre-op area all that time, so they did eventually start my IV so that helped a little. My wife and daughter were able to stay with me so we talked and tried to forget how long we were waiting. I eventually fell asleep so I guess they just sat there and watched me. Finally a nurse from the OR came and talked to me. She told me that they would put in a catheter while I was in the OR. (Wasn't too thrilled to hear that) She also told my wife the surgery would take about an hour (it was three hours and my wife was scared because it was taking so long) More waiting then finally the anesthesiologist came, he tried to take a life history while they were trying to roll the bed off to the OR. I wil be honest the guy was a real jerk, but he put me to sleep and I woke up, so that is all I will say about it. They gave me a shot of Versed just as I left the pre-op area, so I really don't remember much until after I got to my room. They took the catheter out in the recovery room and I was still pretty groggy so I barely remember it, They took me to my room and my wife and daughter were there waiting for me. I was scared to even more because I figured it was going to hurt. It was 11pm by the time I got to my room and I just wanted to sleep. The nurse had lots of questions, but thankfully she let my wife answer them. She did tell me that at 2am I was going to have to get up and walk. My wife was able to stay in the (private) room with me. At 2am the nurse and an aide came to get me up. I was laying on some sort of a bariatric mattress that they blew up and kinda just sat me up. It didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would. I was a little unsteady from lying down as long as I had (14 hours at that point) but I was able to walk after a few minutes. The nurse let my wife take me on a stroll and I made it once around the nurses station, clutching my dance partner the IV pole. One turn was enough! While we had been gone the nurse took the blow up mattress off my bed and had given me nice clean sheets. I figured while I was up I would use the bathroom too and had no problem with that. After I was back in bed the nurse asked me about my pain level. I was pretty uncomfortable, not awful pain, but not comfortable. She gave me a shot of demerol in the IV and it was back to dreamland. I woke up about 4 hours later and my wife suggested another walk. My doctor told me the more you walk, the less you hurt. This time I made it 3 loops and back to bed without pain. Around 8:30 I went down to x-ray for a upper GI to make sure that I had no leaks. Passed with flying colors and was told I could eat. I was a little worried about it, but it slid right down painlessly. Then, the only problem I have had with the entire thing happened. Hiccups. They were incredibly painful and would not go away. They gave me the liquid Lortab and I just fell asleep, still hiccuping. They came and went over the first two days and the doctor said all I could do was take the Lortab and ride it out. Finally after about 24 hours at home they finally left and have not returned.

    Greetings men!

Las Vegas here too. I am only a couple of weeks out and thanks to the pre-op diet down almost 45 pounds. Went to a play last night with the wife and fit into the seat. These are the things that mean more than the pounds on the scale. Just bought a shirt in the regular guy department too.

    Catheter question for men

They put mine in after I was out in the operating room and then removed it right before I left recovery. I was so doped off they could of cut the whole thing off and I don't thnk I would have noticed.
  8. I never thought I would have this problem! I had my surgery July 22nd and as of this morning I have lost 28 pounds since surgery and 22 on the liquid 10 day diet before. I feel really weak and tired and I am wondering if it is coming off too fast. Is that possible? I am still on full liquids and following the diet religiously. My goal is to lose 115 pounds.
  9. Our wedding anniversary is coming up in a couple of weeks and every year we celebrate by going to a very nice restaurant. We also usually take our annual vacation over this time too. Since I just had the surgery and it also exhausted all of our extra money she is getting no vacation and no nice dinner, I want to do something special for my wife. Any ideas She has been really supportive and I know she was very reluctant for me to do this. Since it is done and over she has done everything to help me out.
  10. After 10 days of a liquid diet the bowel prep wasn't all that bad. I have to say I am glad I did it because the morning after surgery having to have a BM would not have felt good at all!

Last day with this ole tummy!

The first 24 hours are the worst, after that you will actually feel yourself feeling better by the hour! Welcome to your new life.

    Protein Bullet for Energy?

I have been drinking one bottle of Isopure for 40 grams of protein every day, and I have also been drinking a 25 gram protein shot. I have heard that the protein shots are the "wrong" kind of protein but my NUT said they are ok. I also have very little energy. I am ok for the first hour or two after I get up in the morning, but after that I am bushed. I am anxious to hear what the old pros say about this.

    Diabetes

This was my number 1 reason for doing this surgery. I am a type 2 diabetic and extremely insulin resistant. I was taking over 200 units of insulin plus metformin plus glyburide and still had sugars in the high 200s-300s. During my 10 day pre-op diet my sugars dropped into the 60s and my doctor took me off the metformin and cut my insulin to 20 units a day. Now post-op 10 days and only on the 20 units of insulin and the doctor says he will probably take me off that this week.
  14. I had my first post-op visit today, 5 days out. I have lost 10 pounds since the surgery and added to the 23 pounds I lost on that famous liquid pre-op diet, I am down 33 pounds in just over two weeks. Hiccups are finally gone and everything else is going great. I get to start creamy soups on Friday, I will never look the same at Jello! Oh, and the doctor presented me with photographs of my surgery. 9 different shots as he went along and a lovely one of my old stomach showing how big it was. Nice gesture, but am I supposed to frame it and put it on the living room wall??? Actually my wife was thrilled. She is a big scrapbooker and she has been taking pictures of the whole process (including one of me in he hospital quite heavily medicated that isn't too flattering). Now she has pictures of the actual surgery to add to her layouts. I am sure that they will be prize winning at her next scrapbook convention!

    Hiccups

YES! I had them too! I just was sleeved 5 days ago and had them almost continously for the first two days. The doctor told me today that it is caused by irritation to the valve at the bottom of the stomach where it meets the diaphragm. There is nothing you can do for it but just ride it out. I just took my Lortab and went to sleep. The hiccups then bothered my poor wife, but I was in La-La-Land and didn't care! Be really careful and eat and drink VERY slow and after a couple of days they will go away. But while you have them I must agree they suck!

    Weird Question

My doctor said the same thing, in fact, today when I went in for my 1st post-op visit he showed me pictures. It was HUGE! No matter I was fat, having to fill that enormous thing up each time I ate.
  18. I had no problem getting out of bed. They told me in the pre-surgery counseling to roll to my side then put my legs over the side of the bed, push myself up with my arms and just sit there for a few moments then stand up. I have more trouble getting out of my recliner. Good luck.
  19. My surgery was on the 22nd very late in the day. I didn't get to my room until about 11pm and they got me up to walk at 2am. I did ask for a dose of pain medicine after the walk. They gave me Demerol in the IV. I think this pain was just from the actual surgery not necessarily the gas. I never did have gas pain. The second day right before I went home I got hiccups and they hurt like (insert your favorite expletive here)! My doctors advice was to take the liquid Lortab to cover the pain. I had to take it three times when the hiccups returned. I have been two days free of hiccups and pain medicine and I woke up yesterday feeling like a new man. I cleaned our pool and took out the trash before my wife even woke up! I have all sorts of co-morbidities but I can't believe I am off some of my meds already. I had to do a 10 day liquid diet before the surgery and I am glad I did, it sort of prepared me for the post op diet. My advice is to follow every rule they give you and to walk, walk, walk. Just laying around makes you weaker and sorer.

    July Master List

I thought they would never get to me. I was told to be at the hospital at 11am for 12:30 surgery. I guess there were a couple of emergencies and I didn't go to surgery until after 6. My poor wife was a mess and broke down and told me she didn't want me to have it done. Then the nurse told her it took about an hour and I was in the OR for three hours. How she kept it together through that wait I don't know. All is good now and it is just a minor bump in the highway to a new and better life.

    July Master List

My surgery date was July 22. I am so glad I found this board. I wish I had found it pre-op, it has been so good to read that somebody else is feeling just like me.

    Five days Post-Op

Honestly, the liquid pre-op was much worse than the post op. I am on day 4 and I can not believe I am not at all hungry. But I must say when I am back to eating regular food I might never eat Jello again.
  23. Just the opposite for me, before the surgery I would have violent coughing, choking spasms two or three times a day. Now 4 days post op and not a single cough.
