    Band removal while pregnant???

I wouldn't say the pregnancy itself would cause a slip, but if u had sever enough morning sickness that might do it. You may feel more restriction though as the baby grows and hormones change.

    Band removal while pregnant???

Let me explain that a little further LOL, it wasn't the slippage itself that was painful, it was the raw sore throat, the constant cramping of the stomach ........ it was all the side effects of the slippage that were painful and having to deal with them for so long. Please keep up updated on what happens. I wish you all the best and hope it all works out for you. I'm glad i'm now on the other side and can finally enjoy this pregnancy and look forward to my new baby with joy.

    Band removal while pregnant???

Hi there Natalie'sMummy (love the name lol) I'm 11 days out of a band replacement and i'm 30 weeks pregnant. So it is possible to operate while pregnant. I do have to say that the risks going into the surgery where very high and i had to weigh everything out with both my band Dr and my OBGYN before we went ahead. My band slipped early on in my pregnancy, but i had to deal with the pain, vomiting etc until i was much further into my pregnancy where it becomes a little safer to operate. One of the highest risks involved with surgery during pregnancy is going into early labour, so we wanted to make sure the baby was at a point where if this happened it would survive. Also if i remember correctly, the chances of abnormalities decrease later in pregnancy as most of the development has been completed. I would say that if your only 11 weeks, it would be way to risky to perform surgery now, although they should be able to put u on antibiotics, (i was on and off them for most of the early stages of my pregnancy, malnutrition lead to so many sicknesses). Try to get a second opinion so u can fully weigh the facts for yourself. I do understand how your feeling, i went through 6 mths of total torture, on one hand i was in the worst possible pain, getting no nutrients in for myself let alone the baby, and on the other hand all i wanted was to make sure the baby would be safe. It's a hard position to be in and if you ever need to talk please pm me. I know i felt like i was totally on my own as surgery during pregnancy is such a unique thing.

    Complications

I had the same reaction from my original band doctor when i asked about slippage. Lo and behold under one year later i finally went to a new doctor who found out my band had slipped and was very confidant (considering my history with the band) that the original band was not placed correctly. I followed all the rules and my problems started withing weeks of the original banding. Do your research and make sure your confidant in the Dr who's banding you. Generally speaking, if u do have complications, I don't think the Dr your seeing now will be a great help. Sorry if that sounded like a rant :straight

Band removed -- Back and feeling good

Hey Alex, I'm so glad to hear that your recovering well and feeling like ur old self again. :clap2: I can relate to your thought process in regards to replacing the band. Before going into my surgery (my slipped band was replaced with a larger band 11 days ago) i was worried about living life without the band even though i am at my goal weight. When i woke up with the band replaced there was definatly a sense of relief knowing that it was there if i needed it. I to felt that hunger after surgery, but it passed after about a week. I think it was more to do with not being able to eat anything but liquid and mushies for so long before the surgery, that i felt the need to eat anything solid. Now that i've gotten a decent meal down, i'm able to use a little more self control. But knowing that the band's there, if my self control should totally leave me, is definatley a good thing for me.

Susannah, good luck with your appointment today, hopefully all goes well and u won't have to go back in for revision on ur port. Christie, I started a thread about all my complicaitons with the band (Sydney Doctor) if u want to have a read thru it. Also a general shout out and hello to everyone else

    Sydney Doctor

Sorry I havn't replied in a while Trish, I've been bogged under with hospital visit's, ultrasounds and the like. It's been confirmed that my band has slipped, and the Dr even suspects that it was never placed correctly to begin with. So I'll be going into surgery on the 2nd of April. He dosn't know if he can replace it or not, so it may end up being a removal, and the chances of getting the band placed after I give birth are pretty low considering my weight now. So i suppose i won't know until i wake up from the anesthesia LOL. How is everything going on your end????

Hey Christie, welcome to the site. I'm also from Sydney and Dr Talbot is doing my revision surgery on the 2nd of April. After going through hell with my last Dr, I must say Dr Talbot was a nice refreshing change. So down to earth and easy to talk to. Seeing as I'll be going into surgery before u, I'll keep u posted on what the experience with him is like.

Susannah - According to this new Dr, he's guessing that is was not placed correctly to begin with and the constant vomiting only made the situation worse. I've spoken to all the Dr's involved now regarding my surgery and i think we've decided to wait until i'm past the 28 wks stage. So if i do go into early labour it's safer for the baby. I figure i've already lasted this long without getting much down, i can go 2 more weeks. I've got an ultrasound booked for next week and if everythings ok from their, then i'll go into surgery 2 April. The band Doc said that he'll try to replace the band during the operation, but if he's not 100% sure that it can be placed correctly then he's not going to put it in. Honestly, if i wake up without the band i don't know what i'll do after that. I do know that i would not have lost this weight without it, but it's been a really really hard road with all the complications. I don't even know if they'll place one down the road considering that my weight is so low now. I suppose i'll cross that bridge when i come to it.

Hey all, how's everyone doing? Susannah - Just wondering what's happening with your port? Have u found out anything further about it? Hopefully all will be well and u won't have any further probs with it
  16. My problems started from day one with my band but everytime i went to see my Dr he always told me i was just feeling the band working. I'm now 26wks pregnant and because i continued to lose weight (after having a total unfil) and vomiting everything even Water i finally had enough and got referred to a new Dr. Well it was confirmed today that my band has slipped and i'll need to go into surgery to have it fixed. There not sure whether it will be removed or replaced, he'll have to see once he's in their. He thinks that due to 10 mths of it being slipped/not properly placed and the constant vomiting, that my stomach will most likely be in bad shape. So i'll only know the outcome when i wake up. My question is has anyone had to go through a band revision/removal while pregnant? Or any major surgery while pregnant at all. I'm really scared for my baby and don't know weather i should take the risk and wait the 3 mths until i give birth, or follow the Dr's advise and just go ahead with the surgery. Any advise would be much appreciated as i'm due to go into the surgery on the 23rd of this month.
  17. That's what i meant by the decision being made for me by the Dr. If he finds the damage to much then he won't replace it and i won't really have a choice........ Bye the way, i love ur sig line, i wanna copy it LOL
  18. Again thanks for the replies everyone, now that i've had a few days i think i've passed the freak out stage and i'm now looking at it all a little clearer. From what all the doc's have been saying so far, it would seem i'll have to go ahead with it. I've got one more appointment tomorrow and i suppose that will be the decider. The only question that keeps going round and round my head is "should i even replace the band?". I've had so many problems with it and i know i'm a rare case, but now that i've reached my goal weight (probably better then my goal ) I keep thinking just remove it and don't risk it anymore. But then the other side of my brain keeps saying u'll just gain all the weight back leave it in. I wonder if i wake up from the operation and the Dr. wasn't able to place a new band if that would be a totally bad thing????? So confused....

Dionne - it's not my first, I've already got two children. Due to my weight, i've never found it easy to become pregnant, so i think we just became careless about being careful I in no way planned to fall pregnant 4 mths after my banding. She Smiles - Could the prices in Canberra be any worse then Sydney, I thought we led the market on rip of house prices/rentals :heh:

    Searching for answers

Slipped band's can go one of two ways. The most common is for it to cause further restrictionw here u can't get anything down, but from what i understand it can slip down which would mean u'd gain weight and feel no restriction. Search these forums i think i've seen posts regarding slipped bands where ppl don't get restriction......i'd also get a new surgeon and second opinion. Good luck either way.
  21. Bandnomore - I really appreciate ur post, just knowing that someone else is/has gone through something similer is a relief in a sence. I don't feel like i'm the only one. I'm really sorry to hear about ur complications and i hope everything works out for u in the end. Alexandra - thanks for letting me know about ur friend, it's a relief to know that surgery can be performed without to much complication. From the research i've done it would seem the only major side effect could be early labour. But the way i'm starting to see it, if the baby dosn't start getting some nourishment then maybe it's not to bad a thing. Becca - thanks for ur prayers, i need them at the moment
  22. FaithMD, thanks for your advice. One of the main reason's the Dr want's to go ahead with surgery is that i can't get anything down at all. I'm nearly 7mths pregnant and not showing at all. I'm still able to buckle up and wear the same jeans i wore before pregnancy, and if anything their a little loose on me. His other main concern is the irriparable damage that might be done to my stomach. Because i'm pregnant we weren't able to do extensive tests to see what lv of damage is done. We only did enough to make sure the band had slipped. That's why he said he won't know til he get's in their whether or not he'll replace it. Otherwise he'll just remove and the choice is mine to put a new one in after i give birth. Boo Boo Kitty - I am getting second and third opinions actually LOL. I've got appointments booked in for later this week. I just wanted to know if anyone else had gone through this because experience has shown me that u get more info from someone who's experienced something compared to the sometimes blunt way Dr's can explain things.

Thanks Dionne for your thoughts. In regards to the pain ur feeling, my guess is that u've eaten a little to much. The pain usually subsides once the foods gone down. With regards to the symptoms i was having, where do i start LOL. From the beginning i had the stuck feeling with fluids, and that feeling never went away just got worse with fills. Then the vomiting, reflux, started. For the past 5 mths mainly i've been unable to get more then one or two bites down of mushies. And 9 out of 10 times that came up anyway. If i had more then a sip of water/liquid that would come up as well. Keeping in mind that all fills where removed about that time because i became pregnant. Also pain near my port site that was really unbearable that seemed to radiate into my back and shoulder blades. The rest of the symptoms i think came from malnurishment (dizziness etc). Can't wait for the baby to get here, it'll make it all so worth while in the end. I should also say sorry if my post's seem a little scattered, but being on the verge of near starvation for the past 6 mths has done nothing for my mental health LOL.

Thanks Bronnie and She Smiles, I've had my little cry and now i'm on the net researching general anesthia and pregnancy (probably not a good thing as i'll just scare myself silly). All i can say is if u guys ever feel like something's not right, don't let the Dr's convince u otherwise, go with ur gut instincts and follow it up. If i had this would of been sorted months ago, probably even before i fell pregant

    Melbourne Chat Thread!!!!

Well i had my appointment with my new band Dr today and the news isn't good:cry As soon as i explained my symptoms he rushed me over for a Barium Swallaw scan thing and as expected my band has slipped. So as long as I get an all clear from my OBGYN on Friday then it looks like i'll be going in for a removal of the band on the 23rd of this month. Right now i'm feeling scared, annoyed and down right p***ed off. According to the new Dr, i've probably got a hiatial (sp?) hernia which is what started the problems, and he couldn't understand why it was allowed to go on for so long (10 mths). I feel like going in to the old Dr and totally giving him a piece of my mind. For month he made me feel like i was over reacting, and even after i fell pregnant he still didn't do anything and allowed my baby to be put at risk like this. I'm sry for the long rant guys but i'm scared for my baby during this operation, but the Dr said that the risks out weight in this situation. He dosn't think it's safe for me to go another 3-4 mths with a slipped band. I'm off now to have a good cry/scream lol
