Hi!! Sorry I have been absent from the forums for a while, I am back, of corse with a question.
I am at the point in my journey where I need I need to make a final decision on which surgery I personally believe will be best from me. Over the past year I KNEW Lap Band was what would be best, but in the past few weeks I have been re-researching Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy.
I am curious of how others came to the determination that Lap Band was for them? Was there a deciding factor (or two?)
thanks,
Sabrina

Thank you sooooo much Edie! I appreciate your kind words and for sharing your experience every comment and story I read encourages me a little more!
Yes, I have a great surgeon picked. The nutritionist I am seeing actually works in his office

My insurance (Aetna CA) requires, like many insurers, a 6 month medically supervised diet... does any one know what the insurance is expecting? I am about 4 months into my 'diet' and am getting nervous... What if I do not lose enough? Do they care how much? My nutritionist says that my severe sleep apnea and bmi should be enough for approval, but have others been denied? Ahhhhhh! Driving myself nuts. Lol!

Thank you all!! I am even more confident that I am making the right choice a couple of you have invited me to be a friend, thanks! Bear with me while I try to figure this stuff out... do I have to accept friends? Lol! I would love more 'friends', so feel free to invite me.

I have never had any type of surgery, nor have had to be 'put under' for any reason. I even got all four wisdom teeth pulled at the same time with only a few shots of novacaine... and had two babies naturally with no pain meds at all.
I have no fear of the actual lapbad placement surgery. I have no fear of the pain in healing. My fear is of anesthesia! I know there is risk with any surgery, but it is 2011 for goodness sake... why I have a phobia of anesthesia I do not know...?? I suppose this is an irrational fear, but still a fear that I have about 4 months to get over...
I am not sure what comments I am expecting from my new found LBT friends, but did anyone have this fear? You came out okay, right?!

thanks for everyone's input!! this is great info
i am hoping i can work surgery in around the holidays, so i will not have to use too much of my pto... but it may be torture not to be able to eat pumpkin pie, and turkey. on the otherhand, perhaps it is perfect timing
thanks again!

Hi StephO I am not sure where you are located, but I know that Kaiser does allow members to continue coverage as private pay if your coverage ends too soon just something you may want to look into 'just in case' good luck!

Hi Paul! I have not had surgery yet, still going through all of my insurance requirements... anyhow, I wanted to mention that many doctors and hospitals have informational seminars and they are FREE! You will get a lot of good info and have your questions answered. Make sure you go to a reputible physician, and not a 1-800 'clinic' with billboards on the side of every freeway exit (or at least check with the BBB). Your primary care physician may be able to refer you to a bariatric doctor Also, (not to preach or anything) if you go through with surgery, want to do it for yourself! F' what everyone else thinks of you! You will do it for your health Good luck on your journey!

Thanks sparkplug! I agree with you 100%. This is definately my decision! After reading hours of messages on this site, I am even more sure this is the right thing for ME! I realize that I do not have to convince anyone in my life that this is the right thing to do, in the end only God can judge me thank you for the assurance; you are the reason I joined this site... thank you!!

Hi Shelli! I am new on here also I found this site this week and it has lots of great info and verrrry kind lap banders who are willing to share their stories.
I peeked at your profile and see that we are the same age at 35 years young, I am 99.9% sure that this is the right decision for me. I have been up and down the scale so many times, I am ready for a life change I have 3 months left of nutritionist appointments (as required by my insurance). I am hoping to have my surgery by the end of the year... I would love to hear how your journey goes. Keep in touch!

Thanks for the encouraging words! I saw my nutritionist yesterday and she has also reminded me that this is MY JOURNEY! I have two great kids that are my main motivation for wanting to lose this extra weight and live a looooong healthy life! Thanks again!

Hi! I am just curious to know how long were you in the hospital post-op, assuming there were no complications of course... Also, how long before you went back to work? Specifically, if you have a desk/computer job, no hard labor, lifting, etc... thanks!

I have lost weight in the past through diet and excercise, so they know I can do it on my own. Of course it has all come back, plus some, over and over again... They do not understand that my decision to get lap band is not a 'magic cure', but rather a weight loss tool that will help me keep on track.

Hi! I decided a year or so ago that I would have Lap Band surgery. My family and friends are not supportive in my decision... I have found a great Dr. and have been seeing the required nutritionist for insurance purposes; however, the dicouraging remarks from those around me, has brought me here to seek some support, and learn of others experiences. I hope to chat with you!

Thank you all for your input I see people are passionate one way or the other. I love that! One think I am sure of is that BOTH surgeries work and have pros and cons. I suppose we never know what is right, we must make an educated decision and pray for the best. thanks again! sabrina.
