  1. Hi everyone,

I haven't been on here in months till I got a notification a few minutes ago in my e-mail. Just wanted to give everyone a quick update.

I'm one of the success stories. I had my revision August 31st 2013, almost a year ago, and hit my goal weight by new years day. I've been losing and gaining the same 5 pounds since then and as we speak I'm 1 pound below goal. No pain in my tummy, I eat small but satisfying portions and I don't have any health issues. I'm so happy I did the revision

It's such a relief after the failure that my sleeve was. I should have just done the bypass in the first place.

  2. Officially 4 weeks out...

Just wanted to give a quick update...I hit 4 weeks yesterday and after the hell I went through the first week I'm so glad to be here and to be feeling better. Diet wise I'm still on purees but have started experimenting with soft foods... eggs, ground beef, shredded chicken salad, chunks of vegetables in Soups, so far all have gone down well as long as I keep within my 3-4 ounce limit. Sometimes I forget to chew properly and I can feel that lump of food going all the way down my pouch and into the intestine down the point where my jejunum meets my duodenum (yes I can tell where it is from the discomfort of something too large passing through that point). I makes sure to eat every 3 hours when i'm awake. I haven't started taking my supplements and Vitamins yet. My dr's diet calls for waiting 6 weeks before starting them. I'm watching my fibre intake to avoid Constipation and always include a 4 ounce serving of pureed spinach a day to my diet to keep things regular ;). Still not up to 64 oz of Water, but I'm doing my best to get as much as I can...so far no dehydration. In terms of weight loss... due to the complications I had that first week and having to spend 7 days in the hospital constantly attached to 3 IV's simultaneously... I gained 11 pounds. (I initially thought it was 15 pounds but when I did the math again after my brain cells had come back to life, I realised it was only 11). So while it's not quite correct...including those 11 lbs, I've lost a total of 27 lbs in the 3 weeks since I was discharged . Funny thing, is ....no one has noticed. no one has made a single comment. oh well.... eventually it will be noticeable.

Anyone else had surgery on or around Aug 31st? How are you doing?

  3. Hi everyone,

Thanks for checking in on me. I went in for surgery for over 6 hours last Saturday. They found some more complications and I had to get tubed and drains placed. Fast forward a week, I should be leaving ICU soon, transferring to a regular floor. All my tubes are out (thank God). and I have 2 drains left.

Unfortunately after recent work they found a blood clot in my lung, so I'll be on blood thinners for 6 months. Keep me in prayer!!!

I'm sorry you're having all these troubles. But glad you'll be out of the ICU soon.

  4. Hi everyone,

I've been at the hospital (admitted through ER) since Friday night. I was close to being dehydrated, constipated, nausea, dry heaving and I had stomach pains. My surgeon has me NPO due to the dry heaving and he's taking me into the OR in an hour to fix whatever's wrong (possibly narrowing in lower part of my stomach and intestines -- per CT Scan).

Pray for me! Maybe surgery #4 will be the one... (sigh)

    Hey,

Just checking on you. How are you doing after your surgery yesterday? I hope they were finally able to fix what was wrong this time.

  5. Thanks for the reply mlola

When did you have your revision?

    Did the hunger ever subside?

Sometimes i think that low glucose feeling is from my body not being able to absorb nutrients from food, since eating doesnt really seem to help.

I am hoping that is temporary as my body adjusts... I just dont know. I certainly dont want to be sipping apple juice for the rest of my life. My teeth will fall out of my head lol

My revision was exactly 3 weeks ago actually. August 31st. Are you eating foods high in carbs? I'm sticking to low carb high Protein purees and noticed that I'm not getting the glucose highs and lows anymore. That might help you. Also, I limit my Protein drinks as I noticed those were giving me symptoms of dumping, which might mean they are high in sugar and carbs. I stopped taking the shakes for a week, but will try again when I hit 4 weeks because I need the Protein.

Rather than apply juice, why not just try crystal light? Its sugar free but still sweet. I sometimes add it to my Water just to give a hint of flavour.

  6. Hello all

Im so glad i found this thread!!!!! I was just revised from sleeve to bypass on Sep 10th so i am 11 days post op. I was one of the unlucky few who didnt loose much with the sleeve.

I am a newbi to the bypass world snd am trying to learn the ropes. I would love to hear more about the differences between "sleeve life" and "bypass life"

Here is my biggest difference issue at the moment:

When i got my sleeve, hunger really went away for about 6 mos. not just hunger, but that horrible "brain not working" irritable, unable to function feeling that comes with no glucose went away too.

Now... Post bypass.... the low glucose brain shut down is back with a vengence. I am on pureed foods and am eating LOTS to try and combat this. Probably too much for my healing stomach, but i have to work. I also find that eating doesnt really help for more than 20-30 minutes, even if its really high calorie.

Another member suggested sipping a little 50/50 Water apple juice all day. This has helped tremendously, but it goes against my whole no sugar or processed food lifestyle.

Any one else have this issue ? How did you work through it?

What other kinds of differences have you all found?

    Thanks

    Stacey

You are so right that the hunger doesn't go away with bypass like it did with sleeve. I'm still on purees and I eat 3-4 ounces every 3 hours that I'm awake (yes I weigh the food. I don't want to risk eating too much for my punch). Then I wait 30 minutes and then I'm continuously sipping Water for the next 2 hours which keeps the hunger pangs away. then I stop drinking for another 30 minutes and by then time its time to eat my next meal, I'm hungry again.

That works for me, but I'm sure others have other tactics that work for them.

My sleeve also failed partly because I wasn't following all the rules so this time I'm following them to the letter.

  7. Hello to all...I am also a sleeve to bypass revision and I have had a rough time...a rough time with my sleeve (7 procedures/surgeries in 7 months not to mention extreme GERD/reflux... And a rough time with my bypass (2 hospital trips already for dehydration and an ulcer during the surgery, and an abdominal tear right after, and also extremely low bp). My sleeve was 12/13/12 and my bypass was 8/16/13...I'd be happy with whatever support I could get also!

Wow 7 in 7 months, I'm so sorry you went through all that and hopefully the RNY solves it for you. Looks like this group is growing. I thought the sleeve would become the new "gold standard" and yet here we all are.

  8. I"m tired all the time. And I find I have to move slower than normal. I'm also taking tylenol to help with incisional pain and it helps.

As for eating, I've been on clear fluids all along. But as of an hour ago, i've started experimenting with my first Protein shake. I want to start incorporating full liquids and thicker Soups into my diet. I don't really have any issues with drinking Water which is great.

And yes we absolutely have to keep in touch.

  9. I just thought of another question. What did everyone say at Customs in US/Canada for the reason you are leaving the country? Or on the forms you fill out? I usually put vacation, but then again this is not a vacation. I am going to Tijuana for my surgery. I fly out on November 8 and return November 13.

    Hey,

Did anybody ever respond to the customs question? I'm flying to San Diego on the 26th and just wondering what to tell customs too.
