  1. Great article and while something I felt I had a grip on, I couldn't fully understand the whole situation until I was in the middle of it. I believe another large aspect which is not covered (unless I missed it) is the other person questioning themselves and the relationship. "What is wrong with me that my partner feels they have to make this change? Wasn't everything great in our lives?"
  2. Another thing about a small weight gain like that....are they counting those that became pregnant after the sleeve? Because that's definitely a 22 lb or more gain.... I can only imagine they are smart enough not to attribute pregnancy to weight gain as it is being referenced here. This is about gaining weight, ie fat. Not another human.

    Gaining weight?

My advice would be to change your expectations. This is not a going to be a day to day loss kind of thing. As a woman, I'm sure you know you are going to be retaining fluids at different times of the month, this is going to equate to weight. You are doing nothing wrong, just keep following the guidelines your medical team gave you and you will be fine. As long as you follow the guidelines as closely as possible, loss will occur. But remember, it is NOT going to be a straight line from surgery weight to goal weight.
  6. So, here is a post that did NOT get approved over at FreeThinking Fatties. They are not quite so free thinking, I'm thinking:
  7. The pre-op diet is difficult, for sure. Get out there and get moving. Walk, swim, jog (shuffle) ... do something. This will help get your mind off of food and help you focus. Plus, adding a little endurance to your overall fitness will aid in your recovery. Also, try some meditation. If you have never tried it, do a little research on it.

There will be no perfect place, for sure. I am West (185th, North of 26) and Aloha is also West (just a bit South of me). We also have one in Beaverton and Hillsboro. That is why I thought Providence St V would be a good choice as it is at the intersection of Hwy 26 and Hwy 217. But alas, Providence has denied my request. I appealed, and just received word back from their PR person that they would encourage me to continue my search elsewhere. So, I have submitted requests to Emanuel/Good Sam and a couple churches in downtown Portland. As far as a rotating location, it may be difficult as another member who has reached out to me shared she organized a meeting a couple months ago through Facebook, I believe, and had 25 people show up. So, I think we are looking at a pretty large group, especially once we get things rolling. If anybody has associations with a location which could hold up to, let's say, 40 people, please let me know.
  10. Your title and your post say two different things. I'm guessing there is a miscommunication leading to misunderstanding. There is a difference between weight regain and regaining the weight you lost, after WLS. Pretty much everybody is going to regain some weight after they hit their low. 86% would seem kinda low, to me, to be honest.

    Helpful? Not.

I believe if you take the time and effort, you will find there is something else going on at a deeper level here. This is just not a simple case of someone not wanting to pick up their dish after eating a bowl of popcorn. When a spouse makes changes in their lives, it causes the other to begin to question. Question themselves, the marriage, their role ... Some spouses may consider WLS a drastic measure, which compounds this all even more. Depression, anger and resentment can begin to unknowingly creep in. While we would all love to believe this is all about us, the truth is, it runs much deeper than that. I have found the cure to be open, honest and frank conversations. Not about your spouse, because you don't know what they are thinking or going through, so don't presume to know. Talk about yourself, your history with self-image, food issues and all of the struggles you have had and what led you to begin to research WLS. Deep, open, honest stuff that you would only tell a therapist. It can make you feel vulnerable, but my guess is they may feel a little left behind in all of this.

    Overreacting? I want water!

LilMissDiva has the right of it as far as drinking with the sleeve. At least, from my own experience. Any liquid will aid in the contents of the stomach getting to the mushy state required to pass into the intestines. This empties the stomach sooner allowing one to consume more food, therefore, more calories. When I was training heavily for running races, I needed more calories to do my longer training runs. I did drink with my meals and I was easily able to double my caloric intake. But remember, I was running 5 miles a day and over 15 miles on Saturdays. I was still losing weight, but I was burning calories like a mad man. So, again, from my experience, I was able to consume a lot more food when I drank before and during my meals.

    Bowels!

With the drastic alteration of your diet, things are going to be a little different until you return to some semblance of eating. Milk of Magnesia worked wonders for me. I took it daily for a few days just to keep everything moving "normally". I know it has worked for many folks, too. Of course, contact your medical team for your specific needs.

Well ... second Wednesday of the month ... Buuuut. I was also hoping to do maybe Sunday morning walks through Hoyt Arboretum, or many of our wonderful parks. We would walk and chat. I'm also planning on doing some food demos out of my home for those interested.

Hello, I am awaiting final approval from Providence. I had to submit a request to even get the forms to go into yet another queue for approval. I submitted the initial request back in April and their paperwork 2 weeks ago. I received a message yesterday that it is being reviewed. I requested the second Wednesday each month at the Providence St. Vincent location over by Hwy 217 & Hwy 26. Should have an answer soon, but when I was talking to their Resource Services, they were quite excited at the notion of having a bariatric support group as Providence currently has no offerings like this. I'll let you know when I get a firm approval.
  17. Have you ever taken it before? Myself, I would never take it at work, unless my desk was right next to the bathroom. For me, it really get's things moving. Really moving. But I have always had motility issues, so ... your milage may vary. I did not have to do this before my sleeve surgery as I did liquids only 36 hours prior, so, everything was already moving. But for other surgeries, I have and if you are planning on going to work, bring a change of clothes. Maybe two

    Emotions and Eating

In my experience, it is not so much of stopping the cravings, but rather how we react to them which I need to address. Life is going to continually challenge me, I cannot change that. But what can change is how I react. Identifying triggers is great, but identifying our behaviors and the motivation behind why I am putting something into my mouth has been the difference for me. You can do things to stay away from your triggers, but it doesn't prevent you from making poor decisions. Sure, maybe you don't eat, but what can happen is cross over addictions where now the reaction is abusing alcohol, prescription medication, gambling, shopping, sex ... You pick the vice. For me, these things are merely the way I sometimes poorly react to living life in life's terms.
  19. Yup, I tried to be so prepared and ended up tossing or posting on Craigslist. Don't worry, you can do this. It is good to be prepared, but you just don't know where you are going to be at, so ...

    I didnt want to lie...

As I told my wife on our first date, don't ask me any question to which you don't want to know the answer, 'cause, I'll tell you.

    I didnt want to lie...

On to the question of lying. I have answered this question more times than I would like to on this forum as I feel those who fall into the category that not saying they had surgery is lying, I feel, I merely trying to make themselves feel superior. Get over yourselves. But, to address the OP, when I have been asked why I am not having more children, should I tell them I had a vasectomy and give them the details behind my decision? Do I owe the inquirer that information? How about when I run into someone from years past who knew me when I had glasses and noticed something different. Am I obligated to go into the details of my lasik surgery? Having a hemorrhoidectomy was, without the doubt, the third greatest surgery I have had in my life. MY GOD! I COULD SHOUT IT FROM THE MOUNTAINTOPS THE JOY AND RELIEF I HAVE FELT!! Anybody here want the details? Anyone ... ? Why then, am I obligated to go into any detail about my decision to have WLS? When people ask me the secret to my success, telling them portion control, not drinking with meals and exercise is NOT A LIE. Could I have done this without the surgery? Sure. I HAVE done this in the past along with many other diets and I was able to lose weight. Great amounts of weight, but I was never able to sustain the lifestyle. The sleeve helps me to sustain the lifestyle.

    I didnt want to lie...

For me, it has nothing to do with shame, but of having to answer all of the follow up questions. I told one person, a neighbor, before. Then the questions started: Why can't you just eat less and move more? What foods are you eating? Can't you stop eating fried foods? (I never have been a fried food person) What are you doing for exercise? Have you ever tried Water aerobics? What diets have you tried? Did ANY of them work? On and on the questions came. This person had never battled weight from what I can tell. I regretted telling them and never told anyone else after. It was a decision that worked for me.

    Emotions and Eating

HERE is a thread with the same title: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/309095-emotions-eating/ I was (am) more of a comfort eater. When I was down, feeling angry or bored, I would turn to food. I found myself eating often when I wasn't even hungry. I would just mindlessly consume. This is still true for me, to a point, today. The sleeve helps to serve as a reminder, though, and gives me the kick in the rear to look at the core reasons I want to put that xxx in my mouth.

    App question

IOS is on Apple iPhones. So, do you have an iPhone? If you are not sure what they look like specifically, Google it and you will see an image.
  25. THIS article from LiveStrong is what I have always gone by. As pointed out by the OP, even if you are a person who can only absorb 15 - 20 g per hour, then drinking a 40g shake over 2 hours is pretty much EXACTLY what you should be doing. It also depends on your activity level. Without actually reading the full article the OP references and seeing what their test sample was like, it is difficult to say. Where these sedentary people, moderately active, or active? I'm guessing sedentary, because if you read the fitness/bodybuilding studies, they point to numbers closer to 30g. Which makes sense as your body is going to be repairing itself more often and be calling on Protein to repair those muscles. Your body is going to become more efficient at absorbing protein as you continue to work on your fitness. I use the formula given in the article I reference to calculate my numbers. I also bump it a bit as I would rather store a few grams of fat than have my body not having the protein it needs to repair or metabolising muscle if it needs protein. http://www.livestrong.com/article/532626-how-much-protein-can-be-digested-per-hour/
