Smoking After Gastric Sleeve Surgery
...My doctor knew I smoked. He said it was more important that I beat the food issues that contributed to my obesity AND that one should never try to beat 2 addictions at once. I continued to smoke for 3 months after my surgery with no healing issues.... Sounds like it to me.

Gonna Get To Goal. Wanna Join Me?
I think medical science does not account for something. Did you figure your whole weight loss experience time? From surgery? or where you are now till you are finished losing?..only 2 pounds but still... I am eating around 12-1600 cals a day , so should be losing something, but really sticking to the same area for quite a while... even up a bit. Here is one of my charts from the simulator: Assuming I eat more cals than I log (I don't log green veggies, carrots or tomatoes) and perhaps forget some things, or under estimate cals... always possible.... then 1500 could be right. This does not account for the 400-800 calories a day I ate for many months in the beginning. The activity choices.. I think the desk lifestyle is pretty right on for much of my life, however I do work out 4-5 times a week as well so I think my activity choice is pretty right on. I wonder what it is that keeps many/most of us needing so much less calories to maintain... calories in calories out... but that means we are in hibernation most of the time or eating in our sleep!

Gonna Get To Goal. Wanna Join Me?
here it is again. My computer askes me if i will allow a Java applet to open, I say yes, then it takes a little time for the button to show up on the screen, then press the button, then it takes a little time for the applet to open... then you can fill it in and everything is pretty easy. It also offers to walk you through the program.

Gonna Get To Goal. Wanna Join Me?
5'3" 167 lbs 30 yrs, and I would like to lose 40 pounds in <3 months. lose at 667 cals a day and maintain at 2033 final fat 29.7 final bmi 23.1 final weight130.6 you would have to starve yourself to lose that fast. I put your activity at low generally, and high extra activity like having a desk job then running or going to the gym after work... in 180 days 1375 lose 2019cal maintain 128 weight 29.2 body fat 22.9 bmi This program shows how long you diet changes your outcome... so putting in all of your weight loss from the beginning might change the numbers again.

Gonna Get To Goal. Wanna Join Me?
This application is pretty cool... it was very close to how much I lost so far. It shows how much you should eat to lose whaterver you want an how much time it will take, check it out... http://bwsimulator.niddk.nih.gov/ UPDATE Even though this application did estimate how much I would lose in the time I did (within 6-7 pounds)... really I ate much less to get there than they suggested. This seems to be the case for many here.

Thought I'd Be Happier Than This....
It is a big change, but you know, you can still eat good stuff.. just later on, and in smaller amounts... going out will be for the company more, not the food and cigs... and as far a class of wine? Why not. Later on, that is. Your life will be a new normal. You can still kick up your heals, wear that little black dress like you haven't been able to for years, and do it for many more years than if you hadn't done the surgery. Cheers! Your new life is going to be GOOD.

if you look at the things that can exclude you from the study, many here would not be eligible. I would love to see the results though!

Weight Loss Advice 'ignores Body Changes'
The weight simulator is pretty cool... It shows me very close to the predicted weight... I am only 6 1/2 pounds over the predicted weight... It shows I can eat 1500 cals to lose to the desired weight of 160.... I do exercise a little more than the level I chose... I ate a little less than the 1500 cals early on... (even how Im often less than that trying to stay around 1250) But all in all, pretty darn close! http://bwsimulator.niddk.nih.gov/

Questions For Veterans
Research papers with small sample 5 year results only started coming out late last year(2011) so anything said about the VSG longer out than that is pretty much hear say. I would ONLY listen to those who actually had it done earlier for longer term personal results. I do have one friend who had much of her stomach removed over 30 years ago. She lost lots of weight at the time, and has gained lots in the last 6 years. No one ever told her she might lose weight from her stomach being removed... and no one ever told her how to eat to keep the weight off (protein first and such) She has never had problems with her stomach the whole time. She can lose weight and feel good about eating small portions of protein and low carb veggies when she weans off the refined carb goodies.

Sugar Free
Its probably not the worst thing you could have done... but I find when I give myself an inch, it leads to a mile... let your stomach rest. Soon enough you can have some treats. I had sugar free chocolate pudding with a spoon full of peanut butter, or PB2, or almond/flax butter to get my Reeses fix as soon as it was ok with the Doc.... probably around 3-4 weeks... I still try to stay away from sugar alcohols too... they can cause gas and stomach upset... who needs that!

Veterans When Did You First Notice Weight Loss Or A Change On Scale
I came out of the surgery 10 pounds up. I started losing shortly after that. Drinking lots of water helped to get things going.

Uck, Ill :(
So sad your feeling rotten! There was a nasty flu going through California last month, it seemed to hit everyone, started in the throat... sometimes went into the lungs and even the tummy for some. I had it for 3 weeks before I felt better. Luckily, the tummy was spared. Happy birthday, how you feel better soon...

Gonna Get To Goal. Wanna Join Me?
Coops. My method for "forgetting everything bad" this weekend was eat anything I want and don't write it down! I had cherry pie with ice creams for dinner one night. Thank goodness for the sleeve...left some on the plate. I was out of town for 3days/2nights.... I guess the eating thing was a bit of an experiment... I am so compulsive about writing food down, and weighing every day... my scale broke and I went off to LA and ate everything I wanted. Came back, got a new scale and just like magic! up 4 pounds above my lowest! I know its mostly water... and I wasn't planing to do it forever... actually kind of relieved to be home and eat more salads and protein first. I must say I did enjoy the pie and the fries, and the margarita.....Back on track willingly today. The sun is shining, the birds are fighting over the best branch and the cutest girlfriend... spring is nearly here.

Where are the 50s ???
58 here... I went on a road trip to LA this weekend. I was there for 2 nights. I decided to have a "free" trip... not write any thing down... eat what ever I felt like at the moment...(read that extra carbs and fat) and enjoy! Thats what I did. Thai food, cherry pie a la mode for dinner one night... fries smothered with cheese and such... it was all really tasty. I could not finish anything... thanks to the sleeve, leaving pie and ice cream on the plate blew my mind! I did have a sweet tooth, and bought southbeach protein snack bars to carry with me instead of hitting the doughnut shop one day, and had a protein tray from Starbucks on the way home.... when I got back, I figured my calorie intake for the last day and it was around 1800 cals. I had gained 4 pounds. I'm sure three of this is mostly from salt and carbs and will come off fairly fast... but still... if I ate this way every day... up would go the scales like magic. It was EASY. The mindless eating does it every time. Some foods are "sliders" they just slide on down, do not give much of a full feeling and are often full of salt, sugar, fat and carbs. I am glad I ate the pie for dinner... but really, that behavior is one of those things that has to be pushed WAY back to the rarely done category. If you graze, eating small amounts of food all day... especially slider type foods, this is a way to cheat the sleeve too... get more food in over time. Drinking during meals can help wash food through and make room for more quickly. There are plenty of ways to cheat the sleeve. At first it may seem impossible, but the sleeve does stretch (just to a point... never all the way back) but if you can eat twice or three times what you could eat early on, and eat the wrong things... it really adds up. The sleeve is a wonderful tool! It is our habits that will decide if the tool is being used the right way over time.
