? For those who are allowed Raw Veggies on pre-op diet
mi75 replied to mi75's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
well i'm post op now and the surgeon told me at the hospital that i did great with pre-op diet, and that yes, my avocado and dill pickles were ok to have on pre op... -
my pre op was 3-4 shakes, sugar free popcicles, Jello, light yogurt, oatmeal (never had any), broth, Water, unlimited raw veg. i lost 16 lbs over 2 weeks and surgeon said my liver was shrunk, but still fairly large and this surgery would eventually prove to save my life!

i honestly did not know that and i'm a nurse! i can't imagine WHY but like i said, i didn't know this! if you would require an 'open' procedure, they do a vertical cut in the middle belly from right below your rib cage about 6 inches long or so...

Worried because I haven't found a protein shake yet.
mi75 replied to krissi11's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
i LOVE the Muscle Milk Light 100 cal chocolate or the Pro Series Mint Chocolate. I mix either with skim milk and ice to increase the Protein count and the liquid amounts. i was ok with the nectar drinks prior to surgery but post i cannot stand the whey taste of ANY of the drinks. Muscle Milk light does not have any whey taste or chalky flavor. really good. -
a friend of mine had RNY about a year ago and is also a home-business cake baker. she continues to do it even post op and has reached and remained at goal. she says it's not a problem for her at all, just VERY small tastes if required.

me! i find it amazing how much food people BELIEVE they really need compared to how little sustains the body. i am only 10 days out. i too, of course, was one of them, and one of the BIGGEST eaters ever. i could easily down 4000 cals a day before surgery. i understand food addictions for sure...

Lyn i TOTALLY get it. i'm also a nurse and in grad school. i have little advice to offer you because i know how brisk the pace of grad school is. i decided to take a few semesters off due to having my surgery and dealing with the after-effects etc. i'm so glad i did. i'm sure that your cortisol levels are not helping the whole scenario with the stress that you are sure to be encountering. i would probably say maybe trade up some of your walk time for a little tai chi or yoga just for stress relief. your goal will come. you obviously have multiple goals on the table at one time. a person only has so much give in them and i admire your drive. hang in there!

Leg cramps and headaches with pre-op liquid diet?
mi75 replied to tfowler's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i had leg cramps several times during pre-op. we figured out that i was not intaking enough Calcium. i added an extra calcium and it took care of it. i would suggest calling your surgeons office and run it by their nurse. they can get some blood work and remedy the scenario for you! -
Abdominal Swelling Post Op
mi75 replied to blessedandfavored's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i had significant swelling as well. the elastic band shorts i wore in to the hospital were snug on the way out. for me there was also the CO2 gas that they use during laproscopic surgery. it took a few days for that to dissipate. i felt like on day 4-5 i was totally clear of the CO2 and around day 8 when most of the swelling was under control. the worst part of the swelling was that it made it VERY painful to side sleep for the first week. -
i use childrens Flinstones chewables and take 2 a day and chew them then swallow with a bit of Water. my calcium is liquid, although i'm switching that over. can't stand the stuff anymore!

Post surgery bowel movements?
mi75 replied to AnEMal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i think i was abnormal or something... i was 2 days after surgery, the same day i went home. very regular since! and i was on a strict 2 wk pre-op diet and was Clear liquids only for 2 days prior, but still! walk, move, as much Water as you can, etc. our bodies have been shocked so it's not unusual to take a while. -
me too. it's likely related to true muscle spasms in the gut plus the stimulation of the vagus nerve. i just waited it out. i had a bad run in the hospital and they gave me some IV muscle relaxant to stop them. i'm 9 days out now and they are completely gone at this point.
-
could also be a vagal nerve stimulation, which is a nerve running right around our stomachs. not unusual, and happens when the stomach is 'full'. i had hiccups terribly right after surgery but it let up within a couple days!

Can NOT decide between the VSG and RNY! How did you choose
mi75 replied to iamdeannadixon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Like others, i didn't care to have my plumbing rerouted, but originally i too had chosen RNY. I have severe GERD and hypertension, PCOS, insulin resistance, and on and on... My doc had a serious talk with me about TWO things he thought were pertinent regarding my choice: the fact that I am under 40 and have about 80 lbs to lose. He was concerned about the fact that I will likely have a normal longevity, and dealing with malabsorbtion of Vitamins for another 40+ years will be taxing on my system. The other issue was something called 'blind stomach'. I had stomach issues including the GERD and ulcers and other stuff. His BIG concern for me was the fact that with rny they essentially staple off the majority of your stomach and it sits there, closed up forever. there is never again a way to see inside of that organ other than to scope it externally from your ribcage area. he told me that a scope would be necessary every couple of years and that scopes are not meant to be inserted from the outside of your skin through an incision and it would require surgery and eventually revision of major scar tissue. YUCK. didn't want to deal with all that! after that appt it was VERY easy to decide!~ -
P3 packs, available at the grocery store right by the lunchables. these little packs of smoked turkey cubes, cojack cheese cubes and almonds. 13g protein, around $1.30 each. really easy and a perfect little portion. there are also the REV packs which sport some good protein and they are more like a little turkey/cheese/flatbread wrap.

My lasy pcp appt and have to go high blood pressure meds
mi75 replied to Tanglesia's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
i have been on bp meds since 2005 or so...pre-op, i was taking 10 pills a day total for all of my various weight-related ailments. today i am 9 days out and taking one-half of ONE pill a day. good luck, you will get back off of them! -
I am afraid I have messed up on full liquid phase
mi75 replied to Jewells70's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
i think that it is probably fine! i am on full liquids too and i have an actual menu page that my nut gave me. it calls for 3/4-1 cup of cream soup at both lunch AND dinner time, plus 1/2-1 pudding cup for a snack, 1/2-1 yogurt cup for a snack, two Protein shakes, 2 cups of milk, and unlimited water/SF popcicles, broth, etc. for the day. i am doing what they told my and i'm already down 22 lbs 9 days out. -
How long till surgical glue comes off?
mi75 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i'm a nurse but kinda embarrassed that i don't know the answer! i am 8 days post op and all of the edges have pulled loose and sort of broken off. the glue directly on the incisions seems tight still. i'm showering but because i had a drain until yesterday, i was facing away from the Water. the sites have all gotten good and wet but don't seem anywhere close to this stuff coming off. opinions? -
Can't stand the protein shakes!
mi75 replied to fezik23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i like eggface too, lots of great recipes including a philly pizza that the hubs and i can't wait to try! i was told by my nut that for now (immediately post op) there is no way to be able to eat enough Protein to meet your daily needs. she told me too that at about 3-4 months post-op i should be able to drop down to 1 a day, but that i will probably depend on at least 1/2 to 1 shake a day for many MANY months to meet my protein needs. i know all programs are different, so that's just MY program. -
honestly nothing so far! i'm only 8 days out though...but i'm already eating yogurts, puddings, jellos, cream Soups, shakes. the only thing i notice different is that after i have a Protein shake, i have a very sweet taste in my mouth for quite a while until i drink some Water. didn't have this pre-op. i've done the finger dunk thing on many occasions when cooking for the family. yesterday i made Pasta and did the finger dunk into the sauce and taste it for seasoning. also licked my finger after moving bbq from a platter at a party last weekend. really this has been very subconscious but nothing seems different so far...i reported it to my nut but she wasn't too concerned thankfully!

Getting Nervous Surgery is Tomorrow at 10:45
mi75 replied to dannilynn1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
mine was 8 days ago and the night before i had some serious doubts and self-induced panic. just keep reminding yourself WHY you are doing this. go through the routine exactly as they tell you. read as many hospital related threads on here that you can find. i felt like i went into surgery VERY informed and so nothing that has happened this far has been a surprise to me. that has made it incredibly easy for me! prayers for your procedure to go smoothly and an easy recovery! -
Which calcium do you use post op-need examples please
mi75 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i was using a drinkable liquid Calcium for the past few months and just CANNOT now that i'm post op. it just doesn't sit well at ALL. i asked my nut and she said i could maybe try a petite version of regular calcium and use a pill cutter, or look for a chewable. does anybody know of a good chewable calcium OR other option? maybe Viactiv? gummy? i'm not sure which to try and don't want to do anything wrong. i'm only 8 days post op but doing awesome and don't want to mess up anything! -
Which calcium do you use post op-need examples please
mi75 replied to mi75's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
very good, it seems like Bariatric Advantage seems to be the front runner. i called the nut back and she agreed, said to get online and see about them, she would endorse my using them. perfect! -
How did you time out your water intake?
mi75 replied to Photo925's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i am the same as Kindle. I wake up and the FIRST thing is get my Water bottle out. i drink 10-15 oz during my first 30 minutes awake then go straight to my 30 oz Protein shake/milk. i refill my water bottle with various flavors of crystal light and keep it with me all day and just keep sipping. car trips have been VERY different, in the past the first thing hubs and i did was stop by the filling station for a big guzzler (pop) before we embarked on a roadtrip. now we have our waters and head out! -
Scared for 2 week liquid diet
mi75 replied to crazykim's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i was terrified to start my 2 wk because i knew i had to sustain myself to work during that entire time. i found that my Protein shakes made ALL the difference. As long as i started the day with one, had one at lunch time and dinner time, i was not very hungry in between. the first few days were the worse, i had a few small cheats-nothing to derail surgery. surprisingly, the two weeks went VERY fast because i was also busy getting ready to hand my job off for coverage, clean my house, get some social time with friends in, etc. I started my pre-op on a Monday and by that Thursday, my physical hunger was GONE (head hunger was still there). by Wednesday of the second week, it was all i could do to drink 4 Protein Shakes a day.
