  1. if you are going from clear liquids to full liquids i am assuming that you are immediately post op? if that's the case, it could very well be the 8-12 bags of IV fluid they pump into you during your stay, plus coupled with the fact that the IV fluid has either sodium OR glucose added to it, furthering the gain...
  2. i feel fabulous and really feel like i'm right on track. i am incredibly thankful that my GI issues are minor and i haven't had anything more than a few burps here and there. i feel blessed that SO FAR, my intake of my Protein shakes is easy and goes pretty fast too. so far no problems getting my fluids or protein, doing one of these 32 oz shakes in the AM and one in the PM and this meets my protein requirements. i don't know if 30 minutes is good, bad, fast, slow, etc for having my shakes and i'm not 'gulping' huge amounts, just drinking comfortable amounts. how is everyone else doing? anyone else around 11 days out?

My new favorite food for pureed/soft foods is...

i would do a version of my very favorite omelet, a simple ham, onion, green pepper, mushroom and cheddar. YUM! can't wait to get to softs i'll be making these a lot!

    Dry Mouth

chewing gum brings a lot of air into the gut (same as using a straw) and can make for a painful experience. most surgeons advise against it, but like everything else bariatric, each surgeon is very different... as far as the dry mouth, i would also say ice chips or SF popsicle!

    Hair Regrowth

i have read on here and other places that LOSS happens in months 3-7 most commonly, and then it turns right around and between 7-10 months it comes back. i'm not sure if that holds true or not, but from everything i've read, it DOES come back. i have thin hair too, and to avoid all of the emotional trauma of losing it, as soon as it starts i'm going to cut it very short so it shows less.

    NutriBullet?

you would want to go to the food forums on here, there are TONS of threads specific to each phase of eating and recipes. i have a nutribullet too and love it, but haven't used it yet post op.

    hair loss

honestly i plan to just cut it off once the loss starts- like SUPER short. i know it won't be the best option, but i have pics of some super cute pixie type cuts and i'm just gonna forego all the worry and do it. i AM however, taking Biotin 5000 mcg already so that once the regrowth starts, it will be supported. i'm super hopeful that i'll just look so good otherwise, people won't even notice my hair!
  8. he would likely need workup to see if he could tolerate anesthesia. diabetes can be managed through the surgical process, but each of his doctors will be able to tell him, based on his pre op testing, what his risk factor is so together they can make the best decision. best of luck!

    Skipping Ahead

i have not but i'm only 11 days out! i have my consultation with my nut this week to move to a hybrid puree/soft diet. i cannot stand the look or texture of ANY pureed foods other than maybe refried Beans and squash, so my nut said that if i'm tolerating well after a couple days i can add some finely chopped fish, eggs, etc. no probs so far with anything after surgery, hopefully i'll get the green light! i can totally understand the temptation though, it's been literally WEEKS since i had any sort of real food and although i have no HUNGER per se, i would love some actual food!
  10. i don't know if this will help, but my nutritionist assured me multiple times, as did my surgeon, that a year post op i would be eating 1200 cals daily and that is a REQUIREMENT, not their hope. also, they both assured me that ALL food groups would be represented. i'm not saying that any differing opinions are wrong, but I had this surgery so i wouldn't have to be on a diet for the rest of my life, and to learn to eat ALL foods in normal portions. it could very well be that your balance of the food groups is off. that said, i would suggest FIRST getting an appt with your nutritionist or a dietitian to discuss your food logs, activity logs, etc. they are going to be able to give you the best direction and advice. you might also ask your primary physician to check your thyroid and adrenal hormone levels, both which could inhibit weight loss. good luck!

    The Last Supper

i had many. pizza, subs, seafood, stromboli, Pasta, all sorts of appetizers from EVERY restaurant i loved. it went on for about 2 weeks. some friends of mine actually took a notepad and made a list of all of the things they wanted before surgery, and they crossed each one off as they went along... i truly believe there is nothing that i won't be able to have eventually, even a good filet and corn on the cob- hopefully. i'm only 11 days out but so far having NO problems. good luck to you on your pre op!
  12. well i checked with my bari coordinator and reported all of my intake and sizes, ingredients, timing, etc, and was told that as long as i'm comfortable it is all good. my 32 oz shakes consist of Muscle Milk Pro Series, unjury, mixed with milk and ice. good stuff.
  13. not too much. really. i read and read and talked to dozens of people who had surgery and i really felt like going into it, i had eyes wide open and i felt as educated as i felt i could be about it. nothing that has happened so far has been a big shock. if anything, i thought post op would be hard and so far it's pretty easy. like Kindle, i've had a pretty easy time this far...

    Surgery in T-3 days!

i wish you both the best of luck! i'm 11 days out and doing really great. i feel well, no side effects, no nausea/vomiting. off ALL my pre-op meds except for 1/2 of 1 blood pressure pill (i was taking 10 pills a day pre-op) and feeling just awesome! i've been outside more in the past two weeks than in the past 3 years combined, just to be out there is awesome! already starting to see a little difference, it appears that my weight won't fall off in the same pattern it came on. please let me know if there are any questions i can answer!
  15. i went into the hospital taking 10 pills a day for various things... i left the hospital taking 1/2 of 1 pill a day only. that's it! the hormonal changes that happen with surgery are almost immediate and for many people, some of your comorbidities will reverse even before you leave the hospital. pills that are still required afterward can be cut with a pill cutter or crushed, if allowed. some pills shouldn't be cut/crushed. when you leave the hospital the nurses should go over all that with you and you will know what you are supposed to keep taking or stopping. good luck!
  16. mine was good, but i'm only 11 days out and still on full liquids. our town does a big fireworks on the lake so hubs and i watched it from our yard. no food involved, he made some sandwiches and chips for himself and i had my usual creamed Soup for dinner!
  17. during Clear Liquids, many doctors have you do the Protein 'shots'. they are these callogen based liquid shots with anywhere from 30-45 Proteins in 2-3 oz of liquid. they sound enticing, but taste wise they are pretty yucky. also, they are mostly callogen based, some are whey based, and callogen based protein is not as useful to our bodies as whey. i used them for only 2 days post op during clear liquids then moved on to full liquids and was able to add my Protein shakes back in. yay! you will want to check with your surgeon about what they require as far as protein. 2 wks is a long time to go without your shakes!

Throw out the old in with the new

i threw out stuff that i know long term we wouldn't likely eat- mostly processed boxed stuff that i wouldn't be able to have for quite a while and maybe wouldn't choose to have again anyways. i have 2 kids and a hubs who are all really healthy and kids are both underweight so i had to keep their stuff around! i try to feed them all well and so there is always fruit, raw veg, Jerky, nuts, etc around for snacking. honestly, post op, even though the stuff LOOKS good or in my head, seems tasty, NONE of the food in my house is tempting or an issue for me at all. i have ZERO appetite 11 days out and just focused on the few things that i can have right now. it's weird because post op i have found much enjoyment in cooking for my family. i have put together all sorts of good healthy meals for them, including cooking meats, pastas, Soups, salads, etc. doesn't seem to be an issue for me either, and in fact doing all this cooking seems to be helping me re-form my relationship with food. i respect food much more now as something necessary for fuel.
  19. i did on the first day home too. it was like i wanted to drink and follow the rules but it was HARD. i believe it was due to swelling in the gut. MAJOR swelling. today i'm 11 days out and drinking without any problems at all, in fact i am doing 32 oz in 30 minutes of Protein shake/milk. no issues at all. i would say just keep taking your pain meds which will help, do your walking and just keep sipping slowly. it gets much better around day 4. good luck!

    Eating out card ?

my bariatric coordinator gave me one before i left the hospital. it's a little card with the surgeon's info on it, and informs medical teams AND restaurants that i am a bari pt, requests certain medical procedures certain ways, and asks for me to be allowed to order off the children's menu, or a smaller portion. i am having it laminated and will carry it with my ID.
  21. of course i did it over about 4 hours and added ice a couple times...but still, i'm feeling good about the restriction i feel i have plus the ability to control my intake to teaspoon sips AND still manage to get in my daily requirements!
  22. hang in there, it does get easier! i went home from hosp on post op day 2 and i was feeling ok. got all my liquids/protein in but only because i literally sipped ALL day. today i am 12 days out and actually had Breakfast (big Protein shake and milke), snack, lunch (cream soup), several bottles of flavored Water, and now up to dinner (cream Soup again). later i will have my othr big shake and milk and will have met all my dailies. i am finding that i have ZERO hunger or desire to eat at all.
  23. boo!!! i hope i don't have issues with salads. i LOVE them! hopefully a little more time and you will adjust! i am just wrapping up my full liquids phase (have appt next wed to advance diet). i wish you luck!

    Question

one of the very best things somebody on here suggested was a good sports bra! one of my incisions falls VERY high on my belly and my underwire would have rubbed on it. earlier this year i read a thread where somebody suggested that we use sports bras for the first several days. i took that advice and SO glad i did! i went to walmart and got a 3-pack of these really nice stretchy ones. they gave good support and were really comfortable for the first week afterwards until i could stretch myself and move around enough to get a regular bra on! also i would suggest getting some Protein 'shots'. although most shots are callogen based protein, there are also some whey ones that pack a good amount of protein. i was surprised that from swelling, the first 3 days i had very limited intake. i'm told this is true for almost all sleeve patients, and getting your protein right from the beginning is very important. the 'shots' pack a ton of protein in a very small amount of liquid. wishing you luck!
  25. my bariatric clinic DOES allow soft cooked noodles on soft stage, also potatoes, oatmeal, small amounts of rice. every clinic is different but you should check with your dietitian specifically to see what your clinic recommends.
