    A philosophical question.

I do think that I get treated differently. I get picked up on basically everywhere I go, and that didn't used to happen at all. I also get looked at differently everywhere I go. People used to get out of my way, and look in my grocery cart, and give me dirty looks. Kids used to laugh at me. Now I just get acknowledged like a 'normal' person. Part of it is that I'm 6 feet tall, which is unusual for a woman anyway, and when I was 350+ pounds, well, yeah... I guess I stuck out like a sore thumb. Honestly, sizeism makes me sick. People have no idea what someone's story is, and I think it's incredibly rude and disgusting to judge someone by their appearence. I feel this way about folks who are discriminated against because they are too thin as well. The beautiful thing about this world is that we're all different. Wouldn't the world be boring if we were all the same size and the same weight and the same color, etc? I think so! I love the diversity in human beings; it's what makes us special. One of my goals is to be a yoga teacher for people who are 'overweight', 'obese', or who are otherwise afraid to go to a 'regular' class because they are worried someone will judge them for their appearence or ability in some way, so that they can feel comfortable and can have the benefits of yoga.

    Lapband and period changes

It is so true that we go through a lot of hormonal changes with weight loss, especially quick weight loss. We hold a lot of hormones in our fat cells. I too went through a lot of hormonal changes after my lap band. I have a history of PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) and after losing all of the weight, it went away almost completely and my cycle completely normalized... so much so that I had a surprise pregnancy which was supposed to be impossible for me, and although it resulted in a loss; it was a sign that my body is getting really a lot healthier. I also found that my periods have been heavier and more regular... which is a good thing, but I too had a period right after my surgery that was really long and difficult and it scared me a little. I ended up taking Iron supplements, and I was really careful about my Vitamin intake. Hope you feel better soon, I think you'll be okay, but if it doesn't let up after a couple of weeks then call your doc.

    cheating

This is the hardest phase you'll have to go through after surgery. It's not going to kill you to cheat a little, and at least what you cheated with wasn't too bad, but try to keep on track as much as possible, especially if you felt weird after eating it. You can do it!!!

    Eating Two days after surgery

WOW! I hope that other folks who are very recently banded use this thread as a good lesson. I feel really sorry for that guy. I hope that all goes well for him and that nothing bad happens to him or his band,

    Help! Banded on 11/11/11

I am surprised that they let you leave without doing a barium swallow to be sure that you could take in liquids. I would a) Call your doc b ) Take any anti-nausea meds and / or pain meds you were prescribed, and c) Try to warm up the liquids to see if they go in better. Also, as another poster suggested, try some chicken broth. It's okay to sip really slow. Good luck and feel better soon!
  7. Yes, definitely tell your doctor, whatever you do!!!

    Loose SkIn!!!

What on earth is skin brushing? I'm curious!
  9. Don't worry too much! That's what the fills are for, and working with your surgeon. Express to them that this is happening to you, and this will help your surgeon make up a plan that works just for you. Everyone's different. Some people need lots of fills, and others don't... but they are there to help you. I have a feeling that things will change once you start the process of fills and monitoring yourself from there, and exercising and such, the weight will come off.

How long have you been banded? Have you had any fills before? What kind of activity do you do?

    Loose SkIn!!!

I'm 29, and since April of this year I've lost almost 100 pounds. It's true, it's inevitable that there is going to be some loose skin. It just happens, no matter how much you exercise; if you lose really fast, your skin takes a while to catch up, especially if you were overweight for a long time, your body has been used to being shaped differently for a while. However, at least in my case, I've noticed that the loose skin that is there doesn't look that bad, it's mostly in my upper arms, and I can generally wear clothing that I can avoid it looking weird in; but I just have to deal with the fact that I have the soccer mom bat wing thing going on... (no offense to soccer moms, or grandmas, etc). It's worth it to be healthy!!!

    Hungry at night

I agree with what others said about Protein. Space it out throughout the day. Even if you're used to just having coffee in the morning (and trust me, I was one of those people too), try to have something with some protein in it. My go-to thing is cottage cheese, personally, also eat stuff with Fiber in it, because it fills you up and keeps you full until later. I tend to have cottage cheese and a banana in the morning (and coffee too, black). It helps me set the stage for the rest of the day. I also know that night time eating is more of a behavioral issue than actual physical hunger. It's a pattern you've gotten into that you find comforting. Because of that, you can replace that behavior with something else; for example. Every time you have the desire to go to the fridge at night, you could pick up a crossword puzzle instead, or some other small thing that you enjoy, and eventually over time the habit will be changed, and you'll find the same comfort in whatever thing you chose to replace the eating with. Hope that helps! Good luck
  14. Sugar free popsicles were my best friend! Also, puree'd soups. I made protein shakes and added puree'd fruit to them and puree'd yogurt to get more bang for my buck. I'd make a blender full and then drink it in stages throughout the day.

    My first fill!

It's common not to put fluid in the band during surgery, but sometimes they do. I have 2 cc's in mine from surgery, and haven't gotten a fill yet. As for why you need to be on liquids after fills, it's because it irritates your stomach and pouch and they want you to treat it almost like you were healing after the surgery, and then when the swelling goes down after a day or so, you'll be fine. It gives your body a chance to get used to the fill.

    Boarding a jet plane

Isn't it wonderful? It's all those kinds of things that people take for granted, but they are really exciting! I love being able to go to the movie theater and sit in the seats without sticking to the sides

    hair!!!

I had the same problem. I also lost really fast. It stopped for a while, and my hair grew back, and it's unfortunately been happening a little bit again, but not too noticeably. I think it's just how it goes when you lose quickly. I've not taken any supplements for it, but I have heard that you can take biotin, yes.
  19. It's true, eating is a new journey from how it used to be. I have had a couple of experiences where something I would have eaten in the past is just totally not okay for me to eat now. It's a little unnerving, but it's all part of learning our band and getting used to it. It looks like you're doing really well! Congrats on your loss thus far!
  20. It does go away. It took me a couple of weeks before I stopped feeling it every time I would do anything. I had pinches for a little while after that, but the weird sensation was completely gone after a month.
  21. I was banded June 8th, 2011 and I have lost 75 pounds since then. I lost 25 pounds on my pre-op diet.
  22. I have not had any trouble with pills even from the very beginning. I take a thyroid supplement every day too, along with all kinds of vitamins (although I take them at different times of the day).

    POST OP GAS

I walked as much as possible, and I used a heating pad when I wasn't walking. I took my pain meds at night and slept in a recliner for the first four days, and then I had no gas pains at all after that. It was tough, but I think I would have had a harder time of it without all that walking. It really helped. Also, drink water, it keeps your system flushed out and happy.

POLL: When could you wear a bra post-op?

I wore no bra for the first four days, and then a sports bra on the 5th day. It was just too painful. I didn't have a lot of gas pain because I walked it off, but trying to wear a bra made it worse, so I just didn't do it.
