  1. I drink Boost pretty regularly, IMHO I think they are pretty much the same. A LOT of NUTs don't like any of the pre-prepared drinks for various reasons. I drink the Boost brand because it has less sugar and they are smaller in size - at 6+ months out I can barely gag one of these things down anyway, too sweet tasting for my tastes post-op.
  2. I'm not a doctor but this really flies in the face of most everything I've read about how nutrition works. I was always under the impression that the stomach broke down the food and churned it up into adsorbable mush before passing it to the intestines for all the nutrition to be adsorbed there. With the exception of Vitamin B12 I've never heard of much of anything being adsorbed into the stomach. I would think if this were the case that we sleevers would all be suffereing from maladsorbtion issues like people who have had conventional bypasses. I would think that perhaps edible Protein would typically be better because it's not as processed and probably doesn't contain nearly as much sugar and preservatives, beyond that I wouldn't think it would make much difference. And YES, you will pass Liquid Protein pretty fast through the stomach and not get a full feeling from it, but if it's just supplemental to fairly "normal" meal that sleevers eat it might not matter, it would depend on you as an individual. Anyone else have any knowledge on this subject of stomach adsorbtion of nutrients, especially protein?
  3. Just a WAG but I would guess that only one patient in 100 comes away feeling fine all throughout the recovery and first few months - for the rest of the 99 of use shmoes we wonder WTF did I do to myself? I was afraid I was going to die for a while, then after I didn't I was afraid I wasn't going too. It's completely natural and as Chilo stated, you'll start to lose weight and feel better.
  4. I suffered from hyper hydrosis (excessive sweating) all my life, even a skinny little child I would bust out in a sweat at the slightest amount of effort, even cold northern weather had no effect and I often got hot and sweaty and soaked to the skin in the middle of winter while doing anything - including walking - out doors in the winter. Of course getting fat just made it that much worse. The effects of my heat sensitivity post-op are nothing short of dramatic. I no longer sweat excessively just what I would consider a normal amount and I no longer get red i the face either and to tell you the truth I don't even really feel uncomfortable in the heat. We went motorcycle riding yesterday in nearly 90 degree heat, something I would of avoided like the plague in years prior. I was comfortable and felt fine. When we stopped for supper I was just the slightest bit sweaty, most of which I got from sitting in traffic the last few miles heading for the restaurant. I pile the blankets on at night and use my electric bed pad every night - even so far this early summer. I used to always have a fan blowing at night in bed and all day at work, not any more. Every morning I used to have to leave the bad covers turned down to allow the sheets to dry from my sweat. Our darker sheets often had a ring of salt around them every morning too. I've not read much on what could cause such an immediate and complete reversal of this life long issue. The only thing I can even seem to consider is that severing of the lower part of the vagas nerve that was on the portion of the part of my stomach that was removed. I've read where severing this nerve can stop hyper hydrosis but it is typically up near the heart and not down in the abdomen at the lower stomach. I wish I knew the answer but am glad for the results non the less.
  5. That's why I shop at Walmart, there I'm a medium, everywhere else I'm a 2X Stolen from Larry the Cable Guy.
  6. Congrats, that's a big step. 250 is exciting too - you'll be there before you know it.
  7. I found it was not possible for me to eat enough roughage to clear this up, I instead rely on Mirilax, 1/2 cap daily. It has been an issue for me for decades so it's ongoing for me.
  8. YIKES! That BMI calculator produced the lowest weight yet at 169 pounds, that just doesn't seem possible. I haven't weighed that little since gade school and I was shorter. Neat tool but it seems a little on the extreme side.
  9. So can anyone compare the taste of these to the Super Whey Protein Shots? I can hardly stand these, the nasty aftertaste is the worst.
  10. Yep, we feel your pain, you want to get this adventure on the road, but like the above posters said, it'll be here afore you know it! Then you'll be cursing the day you did it for a few days or weeks - but this passes quickly too.
  11. 6 foot. Funny you should ask, one lady yesterday INSISTED that I was at least 6'2" tall because her ex husband was that tall (wonder why he's an ex? - but I digress ). For some reason this is a common misconception from others I meet both males and female, I don't know why. I even had them measure me in my stocking feet at my last Dr appointment a few months ago, it came out at 5' 11.5" in the late afternoon, close enough to call it 6 foot even in my book, I should be a tad taller in the morning and hope to maybe rebound a bit more as I lose more weight, I WAS 6'2" DECADES ago and have since lost it, due to compression of my spine, hips, knees and arches. According to every BMI chart I've seen I should weigh between 160 and 190, I chose 180 as a "goal" just to be within those bounds. There are some BMI charts out there that have a "big boned" setting that increases the range but I have never considered myself "big boned" in fact when I was last skinny in my 20's (I'm now 50) I was rather light framed and almost effeminate with low muscle mass. Pretty sissy looking anyways.
  12. GO SOMEWHERE AND DO SOMETHING other than just go out to eat or throw a party. Make it an EVENT rather than a meal. If you do go out and have a life partner see if they are willing to share an entree between you as a meal. And Happy birthday! Congrats on the weight loss.
  13. So TWICE today two ladies mentioned that I should NOT lose any more weight, I am 242 pounds and technically still obese. I am down to a size 38 pants and size large under clothes and shirt. I'm not really THAT skinny yet, but I am considerably smaller than I was. When I mentioned that I should lose about 60 more pounds they both practically threw a fit and insisted I don't need to lose any more. I mean it's nice to be made a fuss over by why so pushy and negative? I don't remember being so pushy when I was fat. And I hate to even bring it up but is it just a woman thing? Do I present that much of a "threat" to them by getting thin? Sorry for any toes I may have stepped on.
  14. I think I would tend to go with the folks suggesting the acid, I had the same problem and got a RX for omeprazole too which is the same as Prilosec but twice the dosage and costs me less with my RX insurance coverage. Try and stay away from traditional ant-acids like Tums, too much Calcium carbonate and not enough Water can lead to kidney stones. I found that I still got a little twinge mid morning and the doc suggested what pregnant women do when they get an upset tummy, white crackers. I eat two and feel fine till the next meal. A lot of my problem is stress, I was on vacation last week and hardly had to eat any crackers, back to work today and I have eaten 3 already this morning.
  15. I started out at 375 pounds, 375 MINUS 65% is 243.75 according to my MS Windows calculator. I weighed in at 242 this morning so I am under the 243.75 figure.
  16. Be careful taking Tums - calcium carbonate - if you are not drinking enough water and are not active enough it can lead to kidney stones, very painful!
  17. Congrats! Feels even better to go from the XL to an L size too! You'll be there before you know it.
  18. Most surgeons use a figure of 60 to 65 percent of excess weight lost to consider your surgery a success. I don't know why they use these figures instead of like 75 or 90 percent but I've heard the 60/65 percent figure from a few people here on the board. Today I did my weekly weigh in and was down to 242 pounds from a high of 375 pounds! That a tad more than 65 percent of my excess weight gone! I NEVER thought I see the day when I weighed this little again. I'd publish some pictures but like most fat people I never liked getting my picture taken and when I did I'd hide behind someone or something to hid my ponderous size. So ya'll just have to trust me on this.
  19. Arf! that's funny, just think how many beers you can drink without getting up! Remember though you DO have to empty the collection bag eventually and it DOES create a hell of a mess if it spills or breaks.
  20. A lot can happen in 24 hours, wait and let the surgeon make the call. I am sure that you won't be put at the back of the schedule, they have to make some consideration for emergencies and issues that pop up. We all wish you well.
  21. Yes you can, the big problem is that they contain only 1 gram of Protein PER TABLET, so if the bottle has 100 tablets in it for say $10 that's $.10 per gram, so to get like 50 grams of protein would require 50 tablets at a cost of $5.00 - not very cost effective and a LOT of pills to pop. Here's an example of some online: http://www.google.co...ved=0CEgQ8wIwAA There are liquid Protein shots you can buy that contain 29 grams of protein in less than 3ozs of sweet liquid, they have a nasty sweet taste that is hard to take at first. One you can chug them in 2 or 3 swigs they are more tolerable.
  22. Yes, what Sarsar said, everyone's different. My pain was VERY mild but I had a lot of nausea and general malaise. It took a few weeks to pass but I felt pretty good after that.
  23. When I had bloody urine it ended up being kidney stones. They are typically accompanied with pain either in the kidney area or frontal area in front of the kidney area. Since you didn't mention pain this might not be the case. They are caused by insufficient Water intake and perhaps too much Calcium carbonate intake. If you take calcium carbonate like Tums you should not be, take calcium citrate instead. More than likely it's a UTI like the others say. See the doc. You can help prevent UTI's by drinking acidic juice like cranberry or a supplement called EmergenC which contains a lot of vit. C - ascorbic acid.
  24. I weighed myself one the third day after surgery and pretty much daily from that time forward till just a few weeks ago when I broke past 250 pounds. At this point I weigh weekly on Sunday mornings. You probably shouldn't do this as you can get very discouraged during stalls and weight gains. I know I did. Now I just have a real sense of accomplishment and feel and look really good and consider myself in the home stretch and am not as concerned.
