I am 9 days post - op and so sensitive to smells. Even smells that normally would be pleasant gag me and the smell of the Protein makes it difficult to get down. I asked Gaby from Dr. Aceves' office if this was normal and she ha snot heard it from other patients. I've also had an upper respiratory thing going on; the coughing and the amoxicilln are not helping much. Struggling with the protein because it makes me gag. Anyone else notice a smell sensitivity and will it go away? I feel like a bloodhound!

I do not like the taste of Nectar. I know people rave about it but it gags me and I can smell it. I do like the cappuccino flavor that is all..

Dishes/utensils... recommendations?
delawaregal replied to CraftyChristie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have several 8 oz custard cups that I use. I need to get some smaller mugs/coffee cups. By the time I get to the end of a warm beverage it is ice cold -
I found this article on donating skin if you do have the surgery to remove it. You should have lost a least 100 lbs. Hello, my name is possumtrot
delawaregal replied to possumtrot's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Regardless of here or Mexico make sure you doctor has excellent credentials and has done a lot of sleeves. I don't think anyone can beat Dr. Aceves in terms of experience and care and he is in Mexico. People have the wrong opinion of Mexico. I know a lot of bad doctors here in the US! Congratulations on the start of your new life! Once you have the clearance you just need a date and you are good to go. -
Decisions, Decisions!!! Which doctor?
delawaregal replied to Krista2653's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Krista, I was sleeved on 6/15 with Dr. Aceves. The aftercare I have received has been great, even though he has been at a convention all week. I got sick 6 days after the surgery (unrelated to the surgery) and he and his staff have been so helpful and responsive. I don't know anything about Dr. Alvarez, but Dr. Aceves is a proctor surgeon meaning he trains other surgeons and he has done over 700 procedures. My ex who is a PCP is very impressed with my experience and the care I received. Dr. Aceves follows you for at least 5 years and is collecting outcome data. -
so the psychologist says try on my own 1 more time with 1 difference before surgery??

I am a therapist and just had the sleeve done. Most of us have addictions to food and seeing a therapist could help but it really is not about discipline. I think that if you have good health and no comorbidities it could not hurt to at least try for a few months before cutting out your stomach. Even if you decide not to wait, the therapy may not be a bad idea. I know I am feeling some emotional loss around food delawaregal -

Sam, I have no appetite at all and am struggling to get enough in. sorry to hear you are so hungry. -
No I did not. Sounds like overkill unless there are high risk factors. Maybe consult another doc?

Hi I am 6 days post op and really sick with a throat infection. I can barely get any fluids in today. I was doing fine until yesterday. I've had a sore throat but everyone kept telling me it was from the tube. Guess not. I have been running a fever and just feel awful. I am waiting to hear from Dr. Aceves on what antibiotic my PCP should order. The phlegm and coughing hurt and are making me nauseous. I just want to crawl in a hole I also have edema and even though I have only been drinking lo cal Protein drinks and crystal light I have lost only 1 lb since the surgery!!! what is going on with that. I feel really discouraged and am wondering why the heck I did this. I burst into tears this morning just from feeling so sick. Did anyone else not lose weight in the first week?

Actually after I re-read I realized that Stacey was referring to a Buffalo Hump. what I had was the humping of the area around the shoulder blades that older ladies sometimes have. The most important part is simply becoming aware of posture and correcting constantly until it becomes a habit. Create long neck like a string is tied to the top of your head pulling to the ceiling. Shoulders back. She gave me this neck strengthening exercise that she demonstrated. It is hard to describe but I will try. Head with eyes level; tuck chin, then the idea is to move our neck back almost like it is sliding on the hinges. It is hard to get correctly unless someone is correcting you as you do it. However there are different kinds of Neck humps. Dowagers Hump isindicativ3e of osteoporosis and fractures. Protease Paunch has to do with protease inhibitors and Buffalo Hump is often the result of morbid obesity but can be realted to Cushings Syndrome. So the bottom line is see your doctor becasue it is an indication of some otehr problem. From eHow Should buffalo hump be the result of morbid obesity, constructing a healthy diet and exercise plan with your doctor is the first line of treatment. By losing weight, fat build-up will decrease and a decrease in the size of the hump should be seen. Surgery to remove the fat can be seen as a potential option, though this method has not been approved by the U.S. food and Drug Administration, especially for those with HIV or AIDS, and is not recommended. In the end, treating buffalo hump is dependent on the treatment of the underlying condition that may be causing it. Speak with your doctor to determine the best course of treatment. How soon were you able to exercise?
delawaregal replied to Syry180's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Anyone know when you can start yoga classes? -
It can be related to posture. When I went to PT for my neck my therapist (who is fabulous and does old fashioned hands on PT using yoga and osteopathic techniques) told me I was getting a hump back. She gave me exercises to do and made me very conscious of sitting/standing straight with head up, shoulders back. The hump went away (I did not even realize I was getting it but now I see it in my friends and their poor posture).

OhYeah! Protein Drinks
delawaregal replied to goodlife's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I am only 7 days post op but I had O yeah before surgery. I does have a more sugar but it tastes good and has a lot of Protein. So far all of them make me gag. Isopure taste terrible to me. I mix it with diet ocean spray juice and freeze to eat as a popsicle. I can't even stand nectar which most people like. I would stay away from Muscle Milk it is supposed to have high levels of heavy metals in it -

delawaregal replied to delawaregal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you both. My doc is ordering liquid amoxicillin and a cough medicine with a decongestant. Hopefully I will better in a day or two -
Hi Sam, How are you doing? How is Sonja? Sorry to hear you are having trouble with Proteins. I can't stand them straight either, except for nectar, that is OK. I mix the Isopure chicken broth with real chicken broth and I made sugar free peach Jello with the peach mango isopure. I also mixed it with crystal light peach iced tea. I just bought some diet ocean spray juice to mix with the grape isopure. Maybe if you dilute it you can tolerate it. I will be glad to get to the shakes as well. I am just sick of sipping sipping sipping. I am still bloated so no movement on the scale for me

Share your surgeon!
delawaregal replied to SouthernSleever's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I had surgery on June 15 with Dr. Aceves. The whole experience has been terrific. I am now home with no complications and feel fine other than a sore throat. I Am 59 years old, have high cholesterol, sleep apnea, degenerative disc disease, arthritis and had a BMI of 38. I feel like I had Nordstroms quality for JC Penny cost. My surgery cost $8750 inclusive as opposed to $23000 here at home. I stayed in the most immaculate hospital with extraordinarily attentive staff for 3 nights as opposed to 2 at home. My surgeon has done more than 700 VSG as opposed to 40 for the whole practice here in Delaware. That is why I went to Dr. Aceves, who is Board Certified and a proctor surgeon for other surgeons. Dr. Aceves follows you closely for 5 years and more if needed -
Could this be a new wierd side effect?
delawaregal replied to Lillie24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had surgery on 6/15 and arrived home yesterday. I noticed immediately that I was cold all the time because I was always hot before. I just raised the temp on my AC to 74 and keep going out on the porch to get warm. I can't attribute it to weight loss because I just had the surgery 4 days ago.
