  1. Today was my initial consult. It went well...I was told that after 3 months they will send an approval request to my insurance company (aetna POS) and I should be approved. Because my previous doctor has notation of my weight loss attempts and such like in my records.

I'm still straddling the fence however; while the presentation was being made I kept wondering if I could live with a band and port for the rest of my life. I am reconsidering RNY...but am I willing to take the risk of RNY? I am reconsidering WLS.

In my mind I am thinking...my problem is not always overeating...it is the cake and ice cream. If I can just stop with those two things I will be okay. Dumping is a strong deterrent from eating cake and ice cream...that is why I'm reconsidering RNY.

The surgeon made an interesting comment today. She said that Black women don't tend to do well with WLS...when I asked what she meant she backed away from the discussion. What was that about?

    Anywho...talk to me somebody...

BTW, I am actually 302.7 #s..yes, it does make a difference. :huggie:

  2. I tell you...based on some of the experiences on this board I decided to be proactive and start getting my medical records together. Whoo'...why do I feel like an investigator? Good knowledge though...I now know that if I ever leave a doctor to ask for copies of my medical records.

  3. That is excellent everybody. My situation is like this:

I have never given myself to losing weight but did lose 50 pounds with no effort, while being love sick. Of course I gained it plus another 50 pounds back. My concern is that the amount of weight I lose with the band could be accomplished by my dedicating myself to diet and exercise. With that said my other concern is...knowing myself...will I be able, on my own, to handle the portion sizes necessary to lose 120 pounds.

When it comes to the band...does it really help you manage your portion sizes? I know I sound conflicted...but this is where I am right now. Thanks for your patience.

  4. I'm having my initial consultation on Thursday. I believe the Lap Band is the best option for me...so far.

My question for you all is:

Knowing the amount of weight and effort (exercise, diet modification etc) it took to get and keep the weight off do you think you could have done it without the band?

  5. Happy New Year everybody!!

Spent a lot of time browsing this forum...you guys are the best....

Wanted to introduce myself before I jump in with my questions.

So...I'm Mamaz2ndbaby (middle child) 27 years old and am contemplating Lap Band surgery. I'm at 304#s right now...the highest I've ever been and it's scary because my knees are starting to hurt. My doctors say my cholesterol is borderline but other than that I'm in generally good health. My goal weight is 185..I like myself at 185.

Thank you guys for building such a wonderfully supportive and informative community. :clap2: See ya around the board.
