    The Turkey Challenge

How about oatmeal. I know that oatmeal isn't really low carbs but the benefits outweigh the 27 grams of carbs. Make sure that you eat whole oats and not the packaged instant oatmeal which has lots of sugar added. Better yet try steel cut oats, they take a little longer to prepare, about 30 minutes or you put them in a crock pot the night before but they are heartier and provide more resistance to the band. I eat these for breakfast almost every morning. Throw in a hand full of raisins and you won't need to add sweetener to them. This has pretty much been my breakfast almost every morning through out my weight loss.

  7. Hi, last weigh in at 252 down 1.5 from last week. Didn't make my goal but still lost 6 lbs for the month, so that's better than no loss at all. Joan, How about next month we do Turkey Challenge, of course the challenge is not to be a turkey and eat to much Thanksgiving dinner. I am making sugar free persimmon pudding this year.

    Hello from Indiana

I went to the IU support group for awhile and it is pretty good, the only problem is that there are NO bandsters in the group, all R-Y. IU doesn't seem to push the band very much in fact when I first started considering weight loss surgery I went to a consultation and was told I was not a good candidate for band surgery because of my high BMI and age. I guess I proved them wrong.

    Hello from Indiana

Where abouts in Indiana. I live in Indianapolis, but had my surgery in southern Indiana do to financial reasons. I am now seeing Dr. Clark at St. Francis on the southside of Indianapolis.
  11. I haven't figured out why so many doctors seem to have a negative view of the band. I was initially told that I was not a good candidate for band surgery because I had an extremely high BMI and because of my age. I found a different doctor who said that there was no reason why I couldn't make it work.
  12. Yea I know what you mean, mine keeps breaking on me too.
  13. Good Saturday afternoon to everyone, been out to thrift stores today looking for new clothes. I actually bought an extra large shirt today, granted it was a large extra large, but the tag still said it was an flippin' X-Large. Quite a change from the 4X I was wearing a year ago. Weighed in this morning at 253.5, that's 2.5 down from last week. Need 3.5 lbs next week to reach my goal.

    new to te board

I still take one med for high blood pressure, down from three, synthoroid for thyroid and allopornol for gout. When I was at my max weight the testosterone shots did very little and the gel did nothing, the shots are a lot cheaper. When I was at my max weight I was hardly ever interested in sex, I had to work myself up to it for my wife's sake, but usually we had relations every month or two. Now it is more like 3 or 4 times a week, and I could probably go every night if I got to bed early enough and I am approaching 60 years old. As far as food calling me yes I still have cravings but then I remember how I felt then and how I feel now and I can usually pass up the bag of chips and go for some baby carrots instead. Now that's not to say that I don't cheat once in a while it is hard to change years of bad eating habits overnight. My advantage is that I never had a sweet tooth, my problem is carbs and a lot of my weight gain come from drinking, wine and beer are my downfall. I still drink occasionally but usually bourbon on the rocks, no mixers. I went from about 4 or 5 drinks per day since I was 21 to 1 or 2 a week or less. As I said before the band only controls your appetite, it does nothing for cravings, that is where the will power comes in. The other problem is that you can fool the band. If you lube up your food or eat slider food it goes right through. For example I may be able to only eat half of a chicken breast but I could sit down with a bag of chips and dip and eat every bit of it. You really have to want this and it sounds like your do. The motivation is loosing the weight, you feel so much better you can't imagine going back there again, and the band will help you maintain. This device does have it's problems and may not be for everyone but for me it was the best decision I ever made. As far as the ratio of male to female 9 to 1 is probably on the conservative side. Women are more concerned about weight gain than men. Men tend to be like us, they wait until they reach critical mass before doing anything about it. I keep stats for our monthly challenge (the link is at the bottom of the page) and it consists of me and about 30 females. Feel free to add me as a friend and keep in touch. Larry
  15. I just realized that I forgot to update the stats last week, so why didn't anyone remind me. I am approaching 60 years old and you know the memory is the first thing to go, and then......well I don't remember what goes next, but anyway the new stats are posted on the web. Just follow the link below. We have a lot more people this month so you may have to scroll down some if you are one of the kids who always had to line up last. When posting your weights please include the name you used when joining the challenge, it makes it easier for me to find you on the table. The Very Scary Holloween Challenge
  16. He's doing fine now. He had a little bit of a problem breathing and jungus <sp> when he was born. He was pretty bruised up because of his size and Jenny is pretty small, her normal weight is about 120 lbs. He is home now.

1 year ago I was 390 lbs at only 5' 3" that gave me an BMI of almost 70. I was type II diabetic, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, under active thyroid, and taking testosterone. I couldn't walk to the mailbox without stopping to rest each way. I had to rest while taking a shower because I couldn't stand up for more than 5 minutes without my back hurting. I couldn't tie my shoes or put on my socks without positioning myself a certain way on the bed. I was miserable, and my quality of life sucked. I started my pre-surgery diet about one year ago and I was banded on January 20th of this year. I am now 135 lbs lighter, my blood sugar is normal with no medication, my cholesterol is normal with no medication. I still take blood pressure meds, but that should come to and end soon. I still take the testosterone shots but they actually do something now, my wife can attest to that. I am a lot more active in everything and am enjoying my life again. Remember though that the band is not a magic device. It will not loose weight for you. It will not take away your craving for food and will not keep you from eating sugar or a lot of other foods that are bad for you. It is a tool the will help you accomplish your goals, but it will not accomplish them for you.
  18. Same as Amy's 9lbs 5 oz's
  19. I usually wi in the morning too, and before I go to bed, and other times during the day depending on how much water I drink. Congratulations on your new addition. Her is my new grandson.
  20. Finally got the scale to move, down 2 lbs this morning to 256. I hope I can keep it off. On a good note I have to go clothes shopping again because my pants are too large so I guess I have been loosing inches. My waist size in now a foot less than what it was when I started.
  21. I know I have sleep apnea but I can't sleep with anything touching my face. I have tried taking a sleep study on three occasions but I have never been able to fall asleep with the probes in my nose. I also know it is a lot better now, my wife tells me that I don't snore nearly as bad and she never notices that I stop breathing at night anymore. I also feel better rested in the morning.
  22. This is number 6, all boys. Four from one daughter and two from the other. Neither of my sons have any children yet so there is still a chance for a granddaughter but at this point I think both of the girls are done.
  23. I am two days late in posting, busy weekend. I think my scale may be stuck around 260 because I can't seem to get off of that hump. I was up as high as 263 on last week but on Saturday I was back down to 258 so no change for this week but I seem to be loosing again. On a personal note I have a new grandson. Colten Adam Pierson was born at 3:24 this Monday morning 9 lbs 5 oz and 21 1/2 inches.
  24. Here is the link to the chart. Very Scary Halloween Challenge If you join the challenge I will add your information when I update it later this week.
