No Pump for me

I made it with no pain meds and I'm a wimp! You got this!

I strongly suggest pain meds. I had the morphine pump the first day and night. The 2nd morning I asked them to take it away because it was making me nauseated. I really regretted that decision. Then I had to wait forever for the nurse's to bring meds to me. I finally figured out to ask 1 hour before I was actually due for one...or continous ringing of my bell until the nurse came. I had to get bitchy a few times. And I am a nurse. When people are not in pain or have never had surgery- they have no clue how important it is to get that pain med. Good luck with your decision. By day 3 - I did not need any more pain meds.

Prior To my surgery I requested no pain to be given to me. I wanted to hurry and recover and I knew that narcotics hinder the process. I was up and out of bed walking tha halls as soon as I woke up. Even if you have a bit of pain thy can give ou what you need via IV or orally. Don't depend on a pump ..

I didn't have a pump- I was given morphine through an IV when I requested it. Morphine sucks- made me itch. Usually they give dilaudid but there was a shortage at the time of my surgery. When I got home they gave me percoset, which in my opinion, is the best medication ever. Truly a "happy pill". LOL

I need to find out what the pain med protocol is - I know dilaudid works and doesn't make me sick - I should probably let them know

Thanks for the feedback. Percocet works very well for my dental pain but I expect taking pills that first day might be a challenge. However I do well with IM demerol and I will let them know.

I didn't have a pain pump and I did just fine. The nurses were right on time every six hours with my pain meds. Only one time did I feel like my pain was unmanageable, and that was due to gas pains that resolved once I got out of bed and started walking a bit.

I had the pump and it was just right. I didn't have to wait for meds and by timing the use I was able to keep myself evenly comfortable. It takes more meds to regain pain control then to maintain at a lower level.
