Are there medications (OTC or prescription) that banders are not "supposed" to take?

*Bextra is the newest, next generation of NSAIDS. It is simply an

anti-inflammatory with no compound to aid in the protection of our GI

systems.

Sad to say, Bextra has been withdrawn from production and is no longer available (like many of the COX II anti-inflamatory agents). My poor arthritic knees really miss it.

I had to call my doctor (Dr. Ortiz) a couple of weeks ago to ask about a medication. BOTH Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Martinez said there is no conclusive proof that any type of medication will damage your band. Therefore, the myth evolved. The only thing he insists on is that it is not time released and not too big of a pill. Other than that he said all was fair game. He said that the NSAIDS myth has not been proven as true and has snowballed into a no-no. At one time I guess there was a concern but it was not proven. I am still not going to take them, but this is what he told me just a a few weeks ago.

My doctor told me the same thing. She said there is no problem with those meds.

With Ibuprfen (and those types of meds) the concern came from gastric bypass patients. The concern with them is stomach ulsers. Dr. Ortiz told me that because the band is on the outside of the stomach, (no wounds on the inside) there have been no links w/ that med and banded people.

My doctor said I could take aleve on occasion if I had to..

I will add to that my doctor did not say that any medications were off limits. He did tell me to cut large pills in half, and he gave me a card to give other Dr.'s that states I need medication that will work with the band. I don't have it in front of me but if I recall correctly it is referring to size.

He gave me two Rx when I was discharged. He had me open them and look at the size. He told me the small one (pain killer) was okay to take as is. For the larger one (antibiotic) he told me it must be broke in half.

It is also my understanding that many Drs. are recommending Aleve and the such (Anaprox) to be taken only on occassion. I understood this from my OBGYN and and the band wasn't even in the picture at that time. He said they are looking at the effects of long term and excessive use.

My patien card from Inamed says:

"caution should be taken when prescribing potentially ulcerogenic medications"
