What! How can this be?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I just returned home from my 2nd post op appt. ( banded Jan 12th) and I gained 2 lbs! How can this be when I'm eating next to nothing! My Dr. has his pt's on full liquids day 2 after surgery and then soft/mushy foods for the week after that. So last Wednesday I started mushy foods. I have a Protein Drink for Breakfast, a 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of either tuna salad, chicken salad, or egg salad for lunch that I make with low fat hellmans mayo a little salt and pepper and a sprinkle of onion powder. I'd eat that around 12 or 12:30 and not be hungry until around 6pm. Then i'd have either another 1/2 c to 3/4 cup of cottage cheese w/ blended peaches or one of the salads I pre-made for my lunch at work. I have yet to eat a snack! I'm walking on the treadmill or riding my bike for at least 30 mins a day! At my appt. today I am to move to regular solid foods. I'm so worried I'm going to gain at this stage too! The PA told me that it is expected in the mushy stage as most mushy foods are higher in calories, but seriously! What am I doing wrong??! :cursing: I am so bummed! Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Your doctor is a little more generous than some with allowing you to start on mushies from day 3 after surgery. I was on Clear Liquids for 2 weeks post op and then onto mushies for a week, then soft foods. Try calculating your calories. That might help.

You do need to log your calories. You are probably not eating enough. Unless your doctor told you otherwise, you should probably be between 1000-1200. I consume between 1200-1500. Every third day try to eat the maximum end of your calorie range to keep your metabolism going. You are exercising but not eating enough and your body may think you are starving it.

Whygirl: If you are exercising you will lose fat and gain muscle. Muscle weighs more. I bet your losing lots of inches. Don't worry to much about the scale at this point, since you were just banded.

Right now your body is in recovery mode and you don't have a fill yet. Give it time, you will get there.

Take care,

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I just can't tell you how dissappointed I was/am after today's appointment. I'll keep watch on the calories, I wasn't told to do that or stay within any range, just portion size and Protein first, veggies then if i have room I can have the starch. Thanks again everyone.

I am having the same problem. At first I thought it was because they took me off of my Blood Pressure pill. And I was retaining Water.

I was banded 1/14 and I am still on liquids and Protein shakes.

2/3 I go back to see the dietitian and began the 2nd stage. But it's so frustrating!

I feel hungry all the time, and tired, so very tired. I never took naps before, but now I nap twice a day.

I feel like I already broke my band.

You had surgery two weeks ago. I know it is frustrating, but you are going to be tired. You are recovering from surgery. Make sure you are getting enough Protein in each day and take your Vitamins. You should start feeling a little better once you begin mushies. Also, make sure your Multivitamin has Iron in it. You aren't getting any from your diet at the present time.

Thank you for all the info!

I haven't started any Vitamins yet. I am a Vegetarian, so prior to the surgery I was taking several vitamins. But my doctors nurses said they would be to big to swallow, so they took me off of them for the time being.

I am having 2-3 Protein shakes a day. Water, snapple crystal lite, and hot tea when I am feeling extremely hungry.

I can't wait to move onto the mushie stage, I am starving. haha.

You are welcome. I would either get some chewables or liquid vitamins rather quickly. If you were taking several prior to surgery and none now, that is quite possibly the reason you are so tired. Doctors recommend chewables anyway, so you will need them. Just be sure to get some Iron in you.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
