Noise and Knot in throat

I am 5 days post op and am having a problem with noise and knot in my throat. The noise coming out of my throat, not a burp, kind of like a squeak hurts like heck. It does hurt to swallow even water let along mushie foods. I am going back on liquids today, but just not sure what this is. I did not have a barium swallow done before my band. I did not have this in the hospital so not sure what is going on. It is NOT GERD, this starts before the liquids hit my stomach.

Did you have hiatal hernia repair too?

  • Author

no, but years ago I had a barium swallow and they saw a small one. My surgeon did not say he saw anything or at least he didn't tell my husband that I had a hernia.

It sounds like what I experienced after surgery but that was a result of the hernia repair. If you had a small one years ago, it is possible that your surgeon saw it while he was in there and repaired it...I've read here where people had hernia repair during LB surgery and were not told right away. For me, pre-op I was told that I may have one and if so it would be repaired during surgery. I was not told anything before being discharged so I assumed that he did not find a hernia but when I started experiencing pain like you are describing in this thread and I also had some breathing issues (muscles were too weak to draw in a normal breath) I called the after hours emergency number and the surgeons assistant told me that it was a result of my hernia repair...I could be way off-base but it possible.

Thanks Jodi, I hope this is the answer for me. How long did this issue last with you. I hate it when it feels like a huge lump in my throat, sometimes it almost impossible to burp, I have to force it out and then I feel a little better. But it comes right back when I go to eat or drink, it is maddening!!!!!!!!!

The pain, discomfort and breathing issues stopped around a week post-op. Almost 8 months later and I still can't burp very well but it is not uncomfortable...I hiccup a lot though. Burps are more from the throat rather than from the stomach and I have to force them out.
