first step

Ok well I finally got someone at my insurance that actually knows what they are talking about and got some answers! There is no way we could self pay and didn't want to get my hopes up at all if they weren't gonna cover anything!

They will cover 100% (except the $25 office visit copays) but the first thing I have to do it get medical documentation that I need the surgery either 100 lbs. overweight (which I am) or be more than half your body weigh (I am close but not quite) and if I have some other problem medicaly caused by the obesity (I have hypertension from my last pregancy that hasn't gone away so I HOPE that will work) I am actualy getting semi excited! I know I still have to get approved by insurance to meet with a surgeon but I am just excited this MIGHT be a possibility!

Just wanted to share the good news!! :biggrin2:

Hi tenn,

mine was just the oppposite. I met with my pcp first, then the surgeon did all the test and finally got insurance approval. This whole prsocess has taken a little over 12 wks. But it has been well worth it. My surgery date is sept 4. Yah!!!!!!!! Good luck

My process was opposite also. I went to a seminar (required before I could make an appointment with the surgeon) and consult first. Then after the consult, the insurance person at the surgeon's office gathered the information about what was going to be required from my insurance before they would approve (6 month diet, 5 year history of obesity, psychiatric evaluation, nutrition visit, etc) to be sent in for predetermination. I just got word that I am approved today:biggrin2:, but I have been in the process since 07/08/08.

That's awesome!! I am so glad you got your surgery date! I am still not going to get my hopes up in case I am not approved...that will be a day to celebrate! Seems this is a long process but will be worth it! Hopefully my days of yo-yo dieting are over!

Just wanted to say good luck to you. It is so exciting to think about and hard not to get your hopes up. It sounds like you are on the right track and I will keep my fingers crossed for you!! Keep us posted on your progress in getting that date!!!
