In South Carolina, state employees do not have converage for WLS (they did until 2004). I know this is not the case in all states, but I am interested to see if you all think employees of any state should at least be allowed to purchase an insurance rider that would provide coverage for those who want it without effecting the premiums of those who may never use the coverage.

I think state employees should have the option of purchasing coverage if they choose. If it weren't for my DH's insurance, I would not be preparing for surgery now.

I think it should definitely be covered! Because i used to work for the state, and they refused to cover it for their employees! But medicaid ( state medical assistance ) Does cover the procedures for its clients! I know this for a fact because after working for the state for 6 yrs, and leaving my position. I got medicaid and was approved TODAY!!! I am so excited, but I do think it is unfair for the state employees who work and pay for insurance monthly! It is truly ridiculos and unfair for the employees!

That is one of our arguments. Unfortunately, a LOT of employers are taking the view that most people change jobs so frequently these days, by the time health conditions start becoming an issue, the employees will have moved on. It really sucks!

I was added up all my expenses related to my weight and figured out it would take 10 years for my company to break even on my surgery. So I decided not to make the "it's cheaper in the long run" argument.

I'm not going to use that argument with them. I am trying to convince them that if someone wants the coverage and is willing to pay for it, it should be offered.
