Post-op diet????

Recommended Posts

I am begging for anyone who can remember to please let me know what your post op diet was and for how long?--when could you start mushies ect. My doc is really strict and I've tolerated liquids fine, no vomiting or nausea and I'm thinking i'd like to go ahead and start scrambled eggs, as I am having a really hard time getting Protein in and I am sooo hungry. Also I'm thinking that if your stomach has to churn to digest any chunks(bad) why is it okay that it is flailing about grumbling because I'm starving to death?(worse)Thanx in advance for any help

My post op (banded 5/13) diet is liquids for the first two weeks and mushies starting the third week. I couldn't tolerate the whey Protein either then someone on this site recommended Kashi Golean and I tried it with skim milk and it's great no dusty after taste! eggs do not qualify as liquids I am afraid and you don't want the band to slip by not following the diet. If you want the eggs I would call the doctor first.

Your stomach is not flailing. ;o) You are hearing air, that's all.

Stick to the diet. You are not starving to death, you are hungry. Big difference, hang in there. It is a small price to pay in the long run.

I agree, you need to follow your doctor's orders when it comes to the post-op diet. He knows what is best for you. Why risk doing damage to your band?

I'm going to jump in and agree with Susan and Wasa, you CAN do this!

Why on EARTH would you want to go against your own doc's advice? Just because someone else does not have as strict of a diet doesn't mean you can disregard your own orders. All surgeons are not the same, some surgical technique differs. Maybe you had a hernia repaired that someone else did not and your doc wants you to take it easier for a bit longer because of that. Who knows? We don't. Maybe he had to do a little more work in there to get the band positioned just right. Maybe he has had great success and low slippage stats with his stricter diet.

I remember that period post surgery. IT SUCKED, it was HARD and I HATED IT. But I kept telling myself I didn't get fat in a few weeks, I can stick to a diet to PROTECT my tool that will help me eventually get to a normal weight. Why risk your stomach and band because you are hungry. You know what, maybe we should all have spent a little more time hungry and we wouldn't have gotten to where we needed the band.

Tough love, sorry. Don't mean to be rude, just want to give you a little loving shake and tell you you CAN do this!!!!

I was banded 5/5/08 and everything has gone fantastic. Last Friday, 5/16 I was HUNGRY. I called my Dr. office and spoke with his assistant. She said I could go ahead and start on scrambled eggs, soft fish, etc. My 1st f/u after surgery is this Thursday 5/22. Feeling great! Have lost 12 pounds since surgery.

Banded on May 13 and just started Week #2 of Clear liquids. I have about 100-150 calories a day. No wonder my energy is low. I will start full liquids after next week--yay-protein drinks!

Down 22.5 lbs as of this AM.

My sites are itching!! Also, I can feel my port! When I lose what I want, will my port stick out?? Anyone else with this concern?

I've just ended 3 weeks of liquids. My list of soft foods to go into included eggs so I had one egg, lightly scrambled this evening with 2 tablespoons of cottage cheese. I want to tell you that I've been suffering all evening. eggs as a first meal was a big mistake. Too much. My espophagus (sp?) hurts and I've been burping and belching all evening. Nausea for a while but when I can belch, it passes. I've just had a nice cup of peppermint tea- known to be good for the stomach, and hopefully this will pass by tomorrow morning.

And eggs were listed. So my advise is to take it very easy. I should have treated my stomach better today. Should have acted as if I'd finished a bad stomach flu and gone with watery oatmeal or farina. Or something completely pulverized in a blender. Live and learn. I don't think I did any damage to the band- I think it would take more than this- way more- but why make oneself uncomfortable. I know I'll be much more careful in the future.

Take care and good luck.

Gwenn

I have been back on normal food for a couple of weeks now, as my doc allowed me to move through the stages early due to my excellent progress (but only moved on once I had their OK after visit).

Even with my good progress I was not allowed eggs until week 4.

You can do it... seriously - once its passed, and you are on normal food again, you will have an enormous sense of achievement - and it doesn't seem hard in retrospect. I can honestly say .. I didn't break the rules once !!

Until yesterday, I would have said the same! I have been doing great....and I'm no spring chicken. Mine had eggs on the okay list. I'm crossing them off for me for a while longer- they just didn't agree.

They're through and gone now but left me gassy and uncomfortable. I'm back to liquids today and will try something thicker tomorrow.

I guess much is trial and error. Just don't want to hurt myself much in the process.

Thanks.

Gwenn

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
